From the guest book . . . . February 27, 2011 Thank you Dave! Hana Mana Hale has felt welcoming and home-like since our first night here! Wonderful accommodations have contributed to lifelong memories of my senior trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. Beautiful green backdrops and ocean views have added to the special feelings I have now for this home. This house has provided our large group with plenty of room to eat, relax, and enjoy the Big Hawaiian Island. The quiet location of your home has given us all the ability to enjoy our vacation without the fast-paced vibe of a resort filled with tourists. The neighbors are close enough to maintain privacy at Hana Mana Hale. The location of the house fits the "no worries" Hawaiian lifestyle out of the way of the main attractions, yet within short driving distance to uncountable opportunities including parasailing, snorkeling, kayaking, sunbathing, surfing, fishing, and volcano tours! Beautiful patio areas and second floor balcony are great outdoor places to enjoy the sunset, lounge around, and star gaze. This beautiful home has left me and my classmates with unforgetable experiences. Thank you for your much appreciated hospitality, I hope to be back on the island soon! From the Guest Book . . . . Dave, Everything about this house is perfect. It made me feel right at home. With seventeen of us staying in the house, you would think it would feel like a refuge camp, but the house is so large and spacious there is plenty of room for all of us. The kitchen is large enough for all of us to make our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. the location is perfect, and the neighbors are wonderful. thank you so much for everything, DaynaDid you find this review helpful? From the guest book . . . . Dave, Thank you so much for your house. I had an amazing time, I'm glad that we stayed here as opposed to a hotel or condo. When we were here it brought us all closer and we had tons of fun. I am glad this house was where we stayed, its not way out of the way and its in an amazing little alcove off the side of the road. The neighbors are fun. I thank you again for letting us stay, it was an amazing get away. Thank you (Mahalo) DominiqueDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

From the guest book . . . . Dave, we have had an amazing stay here in Kona. Thank you so much for making our trip a once in a life time experience in this house. I feel right at home even though I am thousands of miles away thanks to this beautiful place you have made. Everything on this trip has been spectacular and I am sad that I have to depart. Hopefully I will be able to come back for longer at some point in my life. Everyone is so welcoming in Hawaii - both you and the neighbors have been wonderful. The kindness in this area is mind blowing and hospitality is above and beyond what I expected. Thanks for the memories! Aloha and Mahalo HannahDid you find this review helpful? From guest book . . . Dave, Thank you so much for everything you have done for us. The house you built was very welcoming and cozy, even though I am so far from home, I'm not home sick. The beds were comfortable and a lot better then I expected. I have stayed in many resorts before, and even though they are awesome, this house was better for the experience. Hawaii is AMAZING and both you and your neighbors were very nice and welcoming. Your house is now a part of my amazing memories as we did not only sleep here, but played a lot of games and had some conversations that will be remembered for a life time. We enjoyed playing ping pong. I learned turtles are a symbol for good luckDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much for your beautiful house, your hospitality made me feel fight at home. The hot tub is amazing, relaxing my sore muscles after a long hike or kayak while watching a beautiful Hawaii sunset. Its location is perfect, secluded enough that you feel like you have your own personal slice of paradise, but still within driving distance of the major attractions. I will never forget my time spent here and would love to come back and visit. Thank you so much. MosesDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

“ I recently led a group of high school students on a Hawaii Science Field Study from our high school in northern Vermont . The house was absolutely perfect for our group of seventeen! The location and setting was everything we could have hoped for a true “Big Island experience”- a great country location, yet only 10 miles from a great grocery store and other services (including the least expensive gas we found) in Ocean View. The neighbors soon became friends, and our students were up daily visiting with them and their collection of animals including a zebra, watusi cattle, and the “tame” wild pigs! The house quickly became home, and all of us looked forward to returning to our quiet country retreat after long days of activities. The floor plan was ideal; our 10 girls claimed the huge master suite which has one large bedroom, a second smaller one and a bath between with a huge walk-in shower (with its own door to the upstairs deck). A second master suite worked great for the boys, and the additional 3 bedrooms on the first floor were used by our chaperones (with a third bath on the first floor as well! The large, well-equipped kitchen made cooking for 17 a breeze, and Dave had thoughtfully set up dining tables that would seat our entire group together! We had excellent cell phone service as well as wireless connection which made staying in touch with friends and family back in Vermont easy. Dave quickly became a friend and was an invaluable source of information as this was a first-time visit for us. Without a doubt, this is a perfect rental for any large group, a shared-family vacation, or anyone who desires staying in a beautiful, well-maintained Hawaiian country home. We are already planning another trip in 2013 and can only hope that this unique and lovely “Hawaiian farmhouse” will be available for our next stay. Dave, thanks so much for everything and we look forward to seeing you again! Aloha from all your Vermont friends!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

If you want to experience Hawaii and get away from it all, this is a great choice with views of the ocean from both lanais, 5 bedrooms, plenty of space and very quiet. I loved how dark the night is--slept very sound with gentle breezes blowing in through a wall of windows, the extra farm animals were fun too. Midway between Ho'okena Beach, City of Refuge and Southpointe (the cliffs are amazing), also Black Sand Beach but mostly coming back to "the Farm," the peace is palpable.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thanks for the nice comments Lucy. We love to have visitors during the winter months from colder climates on the mainland such as St. Louis, Mo. It is so much fun to see them shed clothing and complain of the hot weather when it is 80 + outside. As a professional photographer, you may have some good pictures of the island that I can past on to those interested.

We stayed here with our family and one thing in particular that I liked were the hundreds of Monarch Butterfly Chrysalis we say all over the place. They were attached to the balcony, doorways, window sills. You could literally watch, in real time, different stages of caterpillars transforming into chrysalis and emerge as a butterflies. A transformational experience indeed. We also enjoyed walking around the 10 acres of coffee trees, macadamia nut trees, petting goats, meeting a real zebra, watching coffee being made (by neighbor) and just relaxing. Thanks for having us. We cannot wait to come back next year!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thanks for the review John. Hope you will come see us again soon. Perhaps more of the family can share the haouse next time and Luke will have someone to play with and explore. Monarch season is coming up soon.

About the owner: Built the house from custom design in three years. Kids grew up now it is time to share our Miracle. The house is an open courtyard lighted by a large skylight. It is a salt bow style farm house with high efficiency conservation features. The picture above is of Hannah, Ingrid, Brent, and myself. It was taken on a day we were all working together on our farm. Hannah and Ingrid are now working there way through NAU (Northern Arizona University). They are on a career path in the business world. Brent is working through High School with the help of his Dad in California. The farm looked like a jungle when we first found it, but now it is open pasture with some very old and big mango trees. We also have wild coffee trees, papaya, banana, rose apple, a Hawaiian strawberry, and wild cherry tomato.
Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook:
We built the house as a refuge and retreat for family and friends - now we are making many new friends. So much to enjoy after many adventures on the Big Island. Plenty of room - BIG house on 5 acres. Quiet, Private, in the heart of natural South Kona. Fantastic sunsets!!
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
Peace, Quite, Privacy, and sense of time standing still, and a solid connection with Hawaii Big Island. Plenty of room. The best Coffee. Clean living. Great weather. Killer sunsets over ocean. Camp fires. Hike/explore the farm. Hike/explore the lava flow close by. Visit our local pristine beach. Prepare local fish or steak on the WEBER grill.
We have clean air with little VOG as compared with places further north in the Kona area. Because our air is clean, we have killer views of the ocean and sunsets. You will always remember our killer views.
We have a nice breeze from the ocean that keeps us cool during the hot days. Our farm is very relaxing. We sleep so sound at night and we find ways to enjoy every day spent with each other. It is so much fun to share our treasure with others especially those who are visiting Hawaii for the first time. We enjoy the customs of Hawaii and you may see us at the airport greeting our newly arrived guests.
