Why the Owner Chose Anchorage: : We had been living 'in town' in a town home in Anchorage for 11 years & were looking for a perfect combination of Mountain & Ocean views, quiet forested acreage w/lots of sunny southern exposure & access to trails for hiking & cross country skiing. We found them all, along w/easy access to town & loads of nearby activities as well! We were able to build Cindy's dream home to take advantage of all the views & leaving the forest as undisturbed as possible, to carve out a few lovely native/perennial gardens up close to house. Unique Benefits of this House: Year Purchased: 1986-We enjoy loads of special things about the location & home during both summer & winter-Winter has us cozying up w/a good book w/warm toes from our warm floor heat, maybe in front of the crackling fire at the foot of master bed, enjoying a sunny morning in the vaulted gazebo style breakfast nook, or lazing about w/our laptops in the double bay-windowed living room under its vaulted ceiling topped by dormer windows.
Continued Unique Benefits of this House:: With views of snowy peaks to the east...or we can strike out from our front door on snow shoes or skis to the open woodlands and trails to the south and east of our home. Summer offers even more options, languid walks on native stone walks around our gardens, exploring the Rabbit Creek Gorge on trails only a short walk away, tromping through the open woodlands adjacent to our land, and hiking mountain and shoreline trails within a 5 minute drive. We really enjoy hiking among the wildflowers at Flat Top Mountain in nearby Chugach State Park...Later on we'll pick loads of blueberries just below the mountain on the slopes of---Blueberry Hill All year we have numerous really fine restaurants from which to choose within 10 minutes, cinema in 15 minutes, and live theater and entertainment only 20 minutes away.
Owner Description/Comments: : Wray & Cindy have 35+ years of Alaskan living to share with you and to help you find the best there is to experience while you are in their beloved Great Land! Wray & Cindy love to hike, ski, canoe, fish, and sight see in Alaska. Cindy designed their home and is a freelance landscape architect, after a government career of 20 years. Wray was in Human Resources until his retirement in 2008. They have a deep interest in fostering Good Earth Stewardship and pursuing ways to be Green & Sustainable, both in Alaska and around the world. They both do really well in English, & Cindy can help you with some Spanish and German.

North Country B&B is your dream home away from home. The house and property are equally beautiful in design and maintenance. The owners, Cindy and Wray, are not only welcoming and friendly, but they also take great interest in your stay and planned adventures while in Alaska, offering their own assistance, advice, and materials to make your visit that much better. Specifically, we stayed in their Turnigan Suite, which has it own deck for looking out over the landscape toward Turnigan Arm, an immaculate bedroom/suite with sitting chairs, fireplace, and plenty of natural light, and a bathroom that is bigger than some bedrooms in itself, with a large walk-in closet, double sinks (his and hers), and a jacuzzi/bath/shower for two. We only asked for breakfast for one morning, but the amount of food they provide lasted us three mornings. For our day-trip to Seward, they provided us an audio CD for our drive south, which provided information about sites along the way as we drove along one of the many scenic highways in Alaska. The B&B is located just south of Anchorage up along the hillside overlooking Turnigan arm, and is a great base location for any travels to the north or south of, or within, Anchorage. We travelled as far north as Matanuska Glacier, and as far south as Seward, and we always knew when we finished for the day we had a great place to kick back and relax for the night with absolutely zero concerns. This is our Alaska dream home away from home now, and as soon as we can plan another multi-day visit to Alaska, we plan on staying at North Country Castle B&B with Cindy and Wray again!Did you find this review helpful? The most beautiful place in Alaska!!! This is what you find when you visit Cindy and Wray Kinard at their amazing home. Everything was spectacular; from the welcome note left in the door, just in case we arrived earlier than expected- and we did- to the surprise chocolate left under pillows, or the wonderful conversation at the dinner table. Everything made a strong impression on us. We NEVER felt more welcome than we did this past August in Anchorage, Alaska. On the last morning, right before we left, I literally broke my daughter’s heart. Our rooms were spotless, beautifully decorated, with gorgeous views of the Turnagain Arm, and a great full moon late in the nights(really it was closer to early morning). There isn’t a day from God that we are not thinking of our lovely friends Cindy and Wray and we pray for a soon comeback. We miss our perfect breakfast at Cindy and Wray’s house, we miss the peaceful life that we had there, and we miss the serenity and love in Alaska. God bless you dear friends!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Our wonderful stay at North Country Castle was the “icing on the cake” of our fabulous Alaska vacation. Under the masterful stewardship of Cindy and Wray Kinard, North Country Castle was beautifully and pristinely maintained, inside and out. The tasteful Turnagain Suite, with its private deck, lovely view, comfy bed, cozy fireplace, and luxurious bath couldn’t have been more perfect. Never intrusive, but always ready to answer a question or offer a suggestion, Cindy and Wray displayed their hospitality and careful anticipation of their guests’ needs in every way. They made us feel right at home, and I’ve more than once heard myself say that, had we lived nearby, the Kinards would be close friends. Don’t miss the opportunity to stay at North Country Castle!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My wife and I stay in 5 to 6 B&Bs every year. North Country Castle ranks in our top three - ever. It was warm and inviting. We left wishing that we had the Kenards for neighbors. They are warm and engaging but not intrusive at all. Our room was luxurious, with a fireplace all prepared to be lit, our deck had a breathtaking view. And the double shower heads in the large tub were a really nice touch. We recommend it without reservation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I did a Road trip up from PA with some friends and spent 2 weeks with Cindy & Wray at their B&B. We showed up 2 days ahead of schedule, but they said no problem, come on make your selfs at home. They are very helpful with ideas on places to get the best local grub, brew, and hikes. The location was great! you are 10ish miles from down town anchorage, but just enough out side of the "city" that we saw a button buck bull moose right by the drive way. I watched an hour long sunset across the bay one evening out their window, slept soundly with nothing but the occasional soft sound of rain to coax me to sleep. Down to basics; the location is nice, they are nice, price is nice.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers.

Though I'd heard raves from other visitors about the "North Country Castle", I was awed when I saw it myself. Pictures show the handsome architecture, but don't convey the rich feeling of being in this space. The common areas have plenty of nooks for privacy, but somehow feel expansive because of the skillful arrangement of interior openings. Cindy is truly a talented designer. Wray and Cindy are marvelous hosts. Gourmet breakfasts every morning, beverages, thoughtful details throughout the rooms and generous amounts of travel information that helped us use our time to best advantage. I highly recommend this accommodation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

Wray and Cindy's home is a tribute to well planned and perfectly designed architecture. The B&B blends beautifully with the landscape and provides ample inviting viewing areas. The interior is awesome. We stayed for days and I never stopped marvelling at the way the floor plan enhances the feeling of space from every room. Somehow one always has the sense of privacy in well-positioned nooks, yet one also enjoys views of upper level windows and lighting. I can't imagine any hosts more gracious and thoughtful than Wray and Cindy. They were committed to ensuring we made the most of our stay. The breakfasts were gourmet quality. I will definitely return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway.
