You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA's most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches- there are six of them, all quite different- are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawaii is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here's why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks.
Kolea, timber-built in 2003, is located a mile from Hana airport on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of old ranch land. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai.
Kolea's principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. Soft linen and towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has plenty of storage and a separate pantry, oven, microwave, blender, and ice-making fridge, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai.
Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32' flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, Internet and wifi. Any special requirements' give us a call and we will do our best.
We will on request provide snorkeling gear and beach towels, and we can guide you on the eating possibilities and many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away.
Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the fall.

It was great being able to avoid the tour bus loads of people by hitting the sites in the early morning and late afternoon. There is so much to do in the area that one day isn't enough so staying a couple nights is well worth it. Also having Andrew show you around the farm is very enjoyable. Hope to be back sometime in the future.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

After spending a rainy day hiking and exploring along the road to Hana, this house was a perfect haven! The main area (kitchen and living area) was inviting - open and airy, and well furnished. The bathroom and bedrooms were very clean (and I am usually picky about kitchen/bathroom cleanliness). Having breakfast out on the front porch was a special treat! The owners were very responsive and informative. We felt as though we were very secluded. Wish we were able to spend more than one night in this lovely home!Did you find this review helpful? My husband and I found this piece of paradise on the internet and loved it. We are kama'aina and love to go to Hana to relax and chill out. This time we came to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary and had the best time ever. Kolea is perfect...well appointed like it says and very clean and comfortable. Truly a home away from home...only better. The location is great - just about a 6 minute drive into town. We originally made our reservation for three nights and loved our time here in Hana so much we extended another night. A hui hou, Kolea Cottage!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Four of us stayed at this lovely home just outside Hana. This house was all as advertised on this site. We would have liked to see more fruit trees etc. but they seem to be on the main owners property away from this home. It was so nice, clean and quiet. We felt very safe and sound. Everything was in good working order. We would like to thank the owners for the trip on driving back around the back side and the Hamoa Beach ParkRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

After driving the Hana highway, we came to the comfortable and lovely Kolea Cottage. It is very clean and secluded, with beautiful gardens. It was wonderful to see the sunset from the lanai, and to simply let go and relax. The kitchen has everything you need. After spending the beginning of the trip in a crowded part of the island, it was great to experience the secluded cottage.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Kolea cottage. It is located about 3 miles from Hana, but feels very secluded. The cottage is well maintained and has modern conveniences like cable TV and intermet, which we really appreciated, as there is not much to do around Hana after dark. (Note: we couldn't get cellphone reception, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing while on vacation, and there is a landline at the cottage.) It was a perfect place for a couple's getaway and was a welcome change from the busy, touristy atmosphere of Kihei, where we also stayed during our trip. We enjoyed taking morning walks around the lush gardens surrounding the property. The owner, Andrew, also helped gather some delicious fruits for us during our visit. We definitely recommend staying here.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I and our son and daughter-in-law stayed here for a few days in February, 2011. It is a clean, airy, place, yet very cozy. We especially enjoyed reading and relaxing on the front porch, even when there was a light rain. We used this place as a home base for activities in the Hana area, including hiking at the state park only a few miles away. Visitors should know that this place is not IN Hana, but a few miles out of town. There is nothing within short walking distance. Additionally, visitors must remember they are in the rain forest and as such, it rains! But you can be in this place with the windows wide open while it's raining, and stay perfectly comfortable. Nights were wonderfully cool with all the windows open, and days were wonderfully warm. We appreciated the laundry facilities, the well-equipped kitchen, and the comfortable beds and furniture. We found the cottage to be cleaned and in great condition. Given that the few evening meal options in Hana are out of the average traveler's price range, one thing we would have appreciated would have been an outdoor grill.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed in this wonderful cottage after spending an earlier part of our stay in a beachfront condo on the other side of Maui. I only wish we had planned a longer stay here. It was a good experience. If you want a place to relax in a beautiful setting and a home that has all the comforts, this is it.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our hosts were wonderfully gracious, giving us a tour of their gardens and offering up the wonderful fruit (bananas, lilikoi and papaya) for our taking. Spacious living and comfort were just what we needed to explore Hana for 2 weeks. We were able to work from the home while our 2 year-old napped and explore the area the rest of the day. Feel free to ask locals about some cool beaches & hikes, and for food, don't miss the Thai, cafe Romantica (vegetarian food cart), Bradah Hutts & Ono Farms tour.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with young children, sightseeing.

We left Hana two days ago, and I am already itching to get back. Kolea Cottage was lovely, bright and clean. The home is situated on stunning grounds and offers beautiful gardens, ocean views, wonderful breezes and anything else you could hope for. It is close enough to "downtown" Hana that it was a short drive to get to whatever we needed. Two "must" stops are Hana Farms, just up the road toward Hana for farm fresh banana bread and the best smoothie you'll ever have, and Glen's ice cream (on your way back out of Hana) for the most incredible dairy free ice cream ever. He makes it with coconut milk, but you'd never know that. Truly worth the stop for both places.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
