Flat in Historic House (Quiet, Safe, Walk to Museums)
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
This is a cozy one bedroom flat is less than half a block from Stanton Park, the most attractive on Capitol Hill and a magnet for families with children. The unit is cute but small, ideal for a couple or perhaps a couple with one child. Although our street is purely residential, across the park from the flat is 'Restaurant Row', a string of restaurants featuring sidewalk tables. This flat combines historic charm with the most modern furnishings and appliances. As all our properties, it is furnished without cramming in beds. It is totally independent from the larger house above (VRBO #325684), with separate entrance, heating, air conditioning, washer-dryer, and phone. It is on the ground floor, not a basement with small windows. It has no stairs beyond a three inch step to enter, so may be a good choice for seniors or those with restricted mobility. Rent includes firewood for the fireplace!
How Reservations Work:
We recommend using the 'Book it Now' button, which will confirm availability and provide a detailed quote before you reach the screen on which you are asked to commit. The flat is within walking distance of some many wonderful places and easy to find even with D.C.'s quadrants. The Capitol and the Library of Congress are an easy walk and there are wonderful restaurants within a six or seven block walk. The flat itself is quite comfortable and cozy and well taken care of..Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

This one bedroom flat was perfect for our family of three (2 adults and a 14 year old). Alec has tastefully stocked the flat with everything we needed for a comfortable stay in DC even down to the small details like umbrellas. Alec provided us with great information and local tips - he is responsive and helpful! The small kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook our meals in the flat. We purchased items like our fresh veggies, meat and cheese (you have the visit the cheese lady), pesto and pasta at the eastern market and found everything else in the small neighborhood market. The flat is located on a quiet residential street within easy walking distance to everything - EXCELLENT location! It is located within about a 10 minute walk from the Capital, the Mall, Union Station Metro, small neighborhood grocery stores, eastern market, public swimming pool to lap swim, restaurants, etc! Thanks Alec!Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

We could walk to so many places we wanted to see, navigating the city from the flat was so easy. If the DC weather had cooperated, it would have been the best vacation ever! Do check out the little French Bistro about two block toward the Metro. It was delightful!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Our stay in the Historic house was great. The location is perfect ... walking distance to the Eastern Market, Capitol Building, Union Station (Metro and bus lines), and the National Mall. With a separate bedroom, kitchen, and fireplace, it was by far cozier than a hotel stay. We will certainly recommend it to our family and friends. P.S. The owner was great to work with - so helpful.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

The accomodations were perfect for our week in DC. We walked everywhere, saw all of the museums and the areas architecture was fabulous. Armands Pizza was very good as was the Mexican rextaurant just down from it. Eastern Market was fun and interesting and we walked to kinkos to print out our departure boarding passes. Losts of restaurants in that area also. Union Station was a must. The property was very clean and comfortable and only 10 minutes from the airport. We had a great time and recommend it to anyone.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would highly recommend staying here. Alec was very helpful and always responded to our emails quickly. It had everything we needed and was in a great location. We enjoyed wandering around the Eastern Market on Sunday afternoon & always looked forward to 'coming home' after a day of sight seeing. The only negative was the noise from the central heating, which we turned off at night because of the noise.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

We had a wonderful stay in this flat. It is as described, was extremely clean and there were no problems at all. Alec is also great to deal with and communicates very well. The location is wonderful, especially if you study before you go and make use of the excellent public transportation system in DC. DC Metro operates the metro system as well as the bus system and circulator bus. With a bus stop on the same block as this house, you can go all over the DC area. Buy a Smart Card before you go and you can use it to pay for all the transportation services mentioned. If you like to walk, it is an easy walk to the Capitol, Nat'l Mall or Eastern Market, and many restaurants in all directions. This was our home away from home while in DC and it was so much better than a hotel stay. We did not cook here, but used the kitchen for drinks, snacks and coffee and it was great. We always felt completely safe in this very family oriented area. I can highly recommend staying here.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 6/6

I was delighted with the apartment and only regret my stay wasn't longer. It would be fine for an extended stay, since the kitchen is thoughtfully outfitted and the closets are large. The bathroom was supplied not only with toiletries (so nice!) but also an array of spa-quality towels. The neighborhood is just gorgeous -- my local architecture-peeping cut into the more monument-oriented tourism I'd planned and I wasn't a bit sorry. It's about a ten-minute walk to Union Station. Two caveats: some of the streets in the area are not well-lit at night, in case this is a concern, but there was so little foot traffic that I felt safe walking alone. Also one sometimes hears the noise of children running and playing from the house upstairs and in the back yard, but unless you are an avid napper, this shouldn't be an issue -- they seem to go to bed at a reasonable hour. I would absolutely stay here again.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, girls getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

The apt was in a good neighborhood, easily accessible to Metro & the Metrobus. Metro has to be the best deal in town! The closest stop was at Union Station which is a leisurely 15 minute walk. We were very pleased with the location. We walked to the Capital and the Library of Congress. There were decent restaurants in the area including a pizzeria that delivered. After touring all day, that was great.! The bedroom was extremely tight and my wife and I haven't slept in a double bed for close to 40 years. It was interesting, but we managed. All in all this being our first time using VRBO, we were very pleased. Alec, the owner, provided us with accurate info before we arrived which helped us to do exactly what we wanted to do. ThanksRecommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car.
Owner response: Just to clarify, the bed is a queen size.

If you like to walk, rent this neat little place, very adequate for a middle age couple that enjoys exploring neighborhoods & sights. It's easy to get to the Capitol, senate & house office buildings, Eastern Market, Union Station (METRO red line) to reach other parts of the city, and be sure to have breakfast a couple blocks away at Jacob's Coffee ( a nice surprise.)Did you find this review helpful? About the owner: In my day job I'm responsible for process improvement of professional services at a major software firm. I apply our cutting edge service practices to my little rental property in my spare time!
Why the Owner Chose Capitol Hill:
Some years ago my wife and I owned a vacation rental in Key Biscayne, Florida. It did very well and we enjoyed interacting with our guests, many of which became repeat visitors. But we had to sell it to move to a larger home with the arrival of a baby. Now we are in a position to re-enter the market, but this time we've done it near home to simplify the logistics. We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having run a vacation rental before and of having lived in this area for close to twenty years.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location! This is a place which is extremely quiet, where you are the shortest possible distance to the major DC attractions, and where you feel safe walking at any hour of night or day. It's a neighborhood that is utterly livable. There is wonderful grocery shopping nearby, restaurants you would visit with the family, bookstores, etc. Metro is a few blocks away if you need to go beyond walking range.
