We think our villa's location on the Côte d’Azur is really perfect. Located a few minutes from Nice, the area benefits from an ideal Mediterranean climate throughout the year. With a year-round sunny, temperate climate, great beaches in one town after another, charming villages with wonderful weekly produce and antique markets, and the cosmopolitan city of Nice minutes away, the area has so much to recommend it.

After vacationing in the Villefranche Sur Mer / St. Jean Cap Ferrat area for fifteen years, we decided we wanted to own here ourselves. Concentrating on Villefranche, we waited for the right property to open up. It needed to be an easy walk into the village, yet high enough up the terraced hillside to offer sweeping views of Villefranche Bay. After three years of searching, the ideal location became available.

We worked with an architect to make sure that the house we built would feel open and spacious, that we would fit the maximum living space (200 sq. m.) onto the site through the use of multiple levels, that the pool and decks would be inviting, and that the house would welcoming. We outfitted the house with the things that we think you would want in a home, because we want them too: en-suite bathrooms; a powder room adjoining the public space; wireless broadband Internet; an intercom system; 42' flat panel cable TV in all bedrooms and living areas; a Nespresso machine in the kitchen; designer furnishings; high thread-count linenes. We put in fun stuff too, like the playroom/extra bedroom that features colorful lighting and a below-ground window looking out into the swimming pool.

We take care of our home, and we expect that you will too. But we also know that no one enjoys vacations where they have to tiptoe around the fragile bibelots dotting the premises. We've taken care to make the house comfortable and livable.

We feel confident recommending the house and the area to you as a vacation spot because we know there is something here for everyone. We've vacationed in this area as a couple, we've been here with small children, we've been here with pre-teens and now we come here with teenagers. Our eighty-something-year-old parents have vacationed at our new house here on their own and love it as much as we do.

Our price includes twice-weekly maid service, as well as access to a local property manager who will assist with any issues that arise. We can provide you information on babysitters and other services you might need. And of course we will leave you information on some of the wonderful local restaurants and markets.

Whether you are looking to spend your time going to museums and gardens, soaking up the sun on Nice's Promenade des Anglais, reclining on a chaise lounge next to our pool or at the beach, or lingering in small cafes, we think you will love your vacation at Villa Hippocampo.

July 2011 We just wanted to tell you how much we loved our trip! Your house made it all possible. We just fell in love with your spot directly in the middle of the bay. WOW! I understand why you chose such a magnificent space to build your dream house. Everything in the house has been planned and each room has its own style. With the spectacular view in the living room and kitchen while cooking, again wow. It all feels like a dream now back into reality! We have been doing a lot of promotion for you about the house here with our friends in Québec. We loved it so much that we might come back in the next year. Thanks again for the basket of delicacies that you put in the house and the Fragonard product. Really considerate of you! It's been a pleasure.

Dear Sage, My family just got back from Villefranche and the Villa Hippocampo and I had to write.  The weather (which has apparently been very rainy until recently,) could not have been better.  The views from the villa—from every room, are exquisite.  It is at least as fun to stay home as to get out and site see.  The beaches-- which we walked to easily—were filled with locals happy to celebrate spring.  We ate on the many terraces at the house and even took advantage of the pool, even though it was a bit chilly (we decided not to have them heat it, but should have.) It was great for all of us-- me, my husband, and twin eight year olds.  We’ll be back next year for Spring Break.

I wanted to thank you for introducing us to Villa Hippocampo.  Because it is a new property, we were a bit nervous to rent it sight unseen.  We could not have been happier.  It is brand new, with very tasteful and high quality furnishings.  The location just can’t be beat.  We drove to Nice, Cannes, Antibes, St. Paul du Vence, and Mougin for short morning or afternoon trips—they were that close.  One day, we drove 1.5 hours into the mountains and there was still snow.  We could have gone skiing! Another day, we drove to Monaco (only 20 minutes) and then on to Italy in time for the weekly market day in Ventimiglia. On our rest days, we just walked to town, relaxed at the beach and seaside restaurants.

Before you get taken in about renting a villa in the midst of the “beautiful people” of St. Jean Cap Ferrat, do some research on Villefranche-sur-Mer. I have rented in St. Jean for the past ten years, but finally gave Villefranche a try. Perhaps it was because of the glorious villa (Villa Hippocampo) we rented with unbeatable views (including all of the houses we rented in St. Jean Cap Ferrat) or perhaps it was because the weather was amazing for the winter months or perhaps it was because my kids were so mesmerized by the “cool pool” at the villa whose side wall is a window to the lower floor video room, but we had our best winter vacation ever. Villefranche is more accessible, more friendly, and interesting than St. Jean Cap Ferrat which is beautiful but limited, especially since all of the estates are walled off and not visible to outsiders. Try renting a kayak in Villefranche Harbor, taking a tour of the old castle and fort, rummaging through the small outdoor antique and food market on Saturdays, or hopping on a train to just about anywhere on the coast in either direction without worrying about parking. We were two related families—five adults and two children who travel together each winter. It was ideal. Thank you!

I was worried that one month in one spot would be a mistake. I was also worried that the traffic would be horrific along the coast. As it turned out, there was no reason to worry about either. Yes, there were backups occasionally, but with the view along the coast, it was no big deal. There was so much to do—locally in Villefranche, in the neighboring communities of Beaulieu and St. Jean Cap Ferrat, in Nice, Monaco, the Italian border towns, and then all of the lovely villages from Nice and east to St. Tropez, including Cannes. We started the vacation looking for things to do in all towns within an hour or so; we ended up wanting to spend a lot of time in and around the villa and Villefranche. We sunned, we swam, we barbequed, we napped, we cooked, we partied—the entertainment was endless. One month was not quite enough. We can hardly wait to return.

My husband and I drove to Villefranche from Switzerland where we were visiting our son in boarding school. It was a lovely drive, but the bonus was the spectacular villa that awaited us. The views upon entry are just breathtaking and just don’t stop. We spent our time bicycling the coast—even made it to Italy one day!--, dining outdoors at the numerous restaurants along the water, and hanging out by the pool. originally had much more adventurous plans to sightsee, but the villa was so inviting, we ended up spending a lot of time at home.

My friend and I stayed in the villa over the Easter holiday with our combined four children — all teenagers.  As its inaugural residents we found it absolutely ideal.  The kids could safely walk to town down the public stairway near the villa, they could go to the beach by themselves, and we even let them take the bus or train both to Monaco and to Nice. The pool and the big underwater window were a big hit with all of us. My friend and I made great use of the outdoor terraces and we joined the kayaking club at the Bay—a great 10 days.

              Why the Owner Chose Villefranche-sur-Mer:
We are an American family who love to travel. Fifteen years ago, we fell in love with the Côte d’Azur and since then have made sure to return here at least annually. We rented a series of homes in Villefranche-Sur-Mer and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat until one day it occurred to us that we'd like to build a house and own here permanently. We waited for the right property to open up, and finally it did! We finished construction in the spring of 2010.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
-The village of Villefranche-Sur-Mer is just a walk down the public stairway from Villa Hippocampo. Villefranche has a lovely public beach, as well as cafes, restaurants, and other commercial establishments along with a picturesque deep-water harbor and an appealing pedestrian maze of narrow streets and squares. -The next town east, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, also has a beach, yacht harbor, and many restaurants, among them our favorite pizza restaurant, Le Catalan. -South of Beaulieu is the lovely peninsular village of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, famous for its luxury villas and gardens and serene pine forests. We love the waterfront walk between Beaulieu and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat along the paved Promenade Maurice-Rouvier. It takes about thirty minutes, winding between the seaside below and the walled villa gardens above, and we never tire of it -- for us, it is the quintessential signal that we are 'home' in France. - Nearby, the palazzos of Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat are national museums offering lovely gardens and gorgeous artwork. When our children were little they loved visiting the nearby Zoo du Cap Ferrat. -Last but hardly least, we love the the bustling city of Nice. Parents love the daily flower market in the Cours Saleya; the kids like the buzz of the downtown pedestrian shopping zone at the Place Massena. And we all love to walk along the wide Promenade des Anglais adjoining the sea.
