Gloucester is a working fishing city. The restaurants pride themselves on the freshest seafood. All beaches open up to the public, dogs and surfers at 5:00. This is my favorite time at the beach. Check out Gloucester Chamber for many festivals during the summer....morecollapse

We have stayed there twice in 2011 and 2012, each visit for two consecutive weeks in early July. We chose the place, originally, because it is pet friendly and we had 3 dogs, one of whom was a greyhound. We grew to like the place because it is semi-isolated from traffic, making it safe to leave the dogs wandering without fear of being hit by a car. This same situation makes it easy to leave the grand kids to pretty much supervise themselves. We have grown to appreciate Gloucester as it is closer to our Boston home than Cape Cod and has less of the traffice and crush of people there. The pool is a welcome feature. Although there always seems to be a breeze blowing, having the pool nearby allows for refreshing dips when the temperature gets too hot. It is also an attraction when we entertaned as the grand kids and others would entertain themselves for hours on end. The pool is very pretty at night with the pool light on. Although the house is semi-isolated, it is still close enough to Gloucester and Rock Port and other historical attractions that visiting them allows for scenic pleasure. There is a large state park on the edge of Gloucester harbor that hosts a farmer's market weekly that offers a variety of interesting and tasty foods. Downtown Gloucester offers a variety of interesting restaurants and shops along it main street. There are also several restaurants on the water offering a variety of fresh seafoods. Barry and Brooke, our hosts were always accommodating and gracious and quickly responded to any need. While they are resident on the property, they reside by close enough to respond promptly. The grass was always kept freshly cut. There is a frog pond on the property that is close to the house. The frogs at night offer a pleasant symphony or croaks. At first you will think they are too loud, but you soon learn to enjoy these sounds that you don't hear in the city. They are relaxing. And showing the grand kids some wild life is also enjoyable. The house has a strong wifi signal so that if and when you need to reconnect with the world you can do so efficiently. The house is best described as rustic and has a pleasant lived in feeling to it. There is a bedroom and full bath off or the first floor behind the kitchen, that provides private location for relatives and guests. The second floor has three large bed rooms and full bath room with separate tub and shower. We will be back again in 2013

Our family of seven (ages 9, 7, 6, 5, and 3) stayed over 3 months and we enjoyed the house and location very much. Located approximately a half a mile from the ocean yet it has the feel like you are secluded in Maine. If you have forgotten what quiet sounds like you will be reminded during your stay. Great place for kids. Our kids spend considerable time outside by the frog pond and climbing rocks. Toward the end of our stay the owner opened the pool early in the year so we would have an opportunity to use it before we left. Certainly not your typical beach vacation rental. My mother visited for a week and kept referring to the house as a museum. I would describe the hosue as rustic yet functional and very comfortable. The owner was very understanding and accomodating when we broke a window after the first week and was also responsive in getting a replacement coffee pot and toaster after they both died during our stay. We really enjoyed our time and I believe you will as well.

We were very excited to stay here coming in from the Midwest, but this place quickly became a nightmare for my young family. We showed up there and the place hadn't been cleaned in months. The sheets on the bed were dirty from the last stay, there was dog hair everywhere, and the fridge was full of rotten food. The house is on a nice plot of land, but the owner has turned the property into a flea market with all of the junk that he has stored on the property. In addition, there is an actual working junk yard down the street that you look down onto from the front porch. It is a dangerous house for kids. The stairs are more like a ladder, and there is a 3 rd floor that should be condemned. I really wanted to like the place, but there are places much closer to the ocean that you can get that won't put your family at risk. Enjoy your vacation....just not here.

Owner response: Dear disgusting experience. When I met you the day you moved in with your wife, triplet toddler boys and black lab, you were quite happy. When I showed up week after week to perform fall clean up, winterize the pool, blow out the sprinkler lines and perform other duties consistent with good property management, you never mentioned any of these problems. I assume this retaliation is due to the fact that I only returned a portion of your security deposit and not the entire amount due to the itemized outstanding utility bills and property damage. I was entitled to keep it all due to you breaking your lease 34 days early, but I didn't. (Shame on me). I have been in the rental business for 23 years and take great pride in my property. I have another listing on VRBO #241235. How is it possible to get such a great review on the quality of that property and my attentiveness to my tenants, yet maintain this property in the manner in which you reviewed. Your review is a complete fabrication of facts and a blatant lie. I'm sure prospective renters will recognize that as well.
