Bucks Beach Bungalow was everything we were looking for. It is a great place to stay, seconds away from some of the best surf in the nation – this is the spot! If you want to surf, or learn to surf, call ED at ClubEd. Recommended by Buck, Ed was a fantastic surf instructor. We ended up in the water surfing for 4 days only having to walk our boards seconds to the coast. The Begonia Festival was so much fun. We rode Buck’s bikes into Capitola and back a few times! After a long day of surfing the amazing hot tub was just the relaxation we needed. Fun Things We Did: Seabright Brewery Crows Nest patio Naka Sushi (wonderful spot for authentic amazing sushi) BBQ on BBB patio Shoppers corner grocery Store – a local gem full of great produce and fresh seafood ready to grill Club Ed Surf lessons – a friend and wonderful surf instructor O’Neil Surf Shop – support the local heritage of O’Neil legend The Boardwalk! So much fun!! Roller coaster, walked up the wharf and saw lounging sea lions Can’t wait to get a Trader Joes in Austin! What a great store. All in All the location, the info and advice given by Judith and Buck made this little getaway the perfect combination of relaxing local surf culture, a plethora of fun activities like foosball and b8iking the coast, with day trips to the Santa Cruz mountains and Monterey less than an hour away! Can’t beat it. Made new friends we can wait to come visit again next summer. Thanks you Bucks! P.S. We really like checking out all the great mementos you have collected over the years in the Bungalow. It was actually quite educational as well as fun! Very much appreciate you letting us landlocked folks partake in the great surf culture this truly special place in the USA has to offer. Santa Cruz is a special place, truly unique, vibrant and beautiful!Recommended for: Pet owners, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you sooo much for your great review. Its always a delight to meet folks like you that have so much zest for life and really take advantage of a lot of the great things to see and do around here. Bucks Beach Bungalow is a treasure at a wonderful location at Pleasure Point a world class surfing location and site for the upcoming movie "Of Men and Mavericks". Buck was a personal friend of Jay Moriarity and his wife Kim and neighbors and surfer friends Frosty and Zouf - who are the real life people the movie was made after. Buck saw Jay a couple weeks before his accident in the Maldives and remembers a huge smile on Jay's face before they both went out surfing Pleasure Point! We had a wonderful time with the beautiful beach walks on EastCliff Pleasure Point with views across Monterey Bay. The house is well provisioned as any personal home would be - saving us time and very convenient. The back yard is gated for pets, but the pet-walks are awesome. The Hot Tub is First Class with wonderful massage jets!!!!! Nearby restaurants are very good. The Bungalow is centrally located in Santa Cruz, and everything is within a short walk, bicycle ride, or by car. There are many activities all summer long, and we were lucky to reserve early during the premium summer weeks. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful Bungalow with us!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

From: Two Anthropologists and their dog Wilhelm Thanks so much for sharing this slice of surfer - beach bungalow life. If we were to write an ethnography of you, we would say you are a master of space management. Your bungalow is iconic of the Santa Cruz Counter culture resistance to high tech big money encroachment and a tribute to all things that Truly Matter! Live long and share the wave! Thanks for letting us stay in your charming and well-provisioned personal home. It saved us many hours provisioning which turned out not to be necessary for basic items. We love vacation home stays as they are typically not unpersonal and antiseptic like hotels. You can't even cook in hotels, and are forced to spend hundreds of dollars in restaurant fees and tips. We loved Pleasure Point and the dogs loved Twin Lakes, Bonfires on the beach, The Crow's Nest and Johnny's Harbor House Restaurant for fine dining food. The Free Bands on the Beach was fun too! Again, we really appreciate your home and Beach Hide Away! From Saratoga, CA and Howwood Scotland, UK Margaret, Rob, Dillon, and Kevin and the dogs (Broxks and Harry)Did you find this review helpful? We did enjoy our week in Santa Cruz/Capitola. Rental location was convenient and pet friendly. However, the bungalow itself was a huge disappointment. Not very clean with "stuff" everywhere and it felt extremely "lived in". The bikes were not well cared for and rusty. The foosball table was completely different than the one in the picture and it was basically falling apart and missing a handle. The boogie boards and wet suits were falling apart (probably because they aren't stored properly). It took my husband 30 minutes to scrub the waffle iron so that we could use it. It was filthy along with a lot of the other kitchen items. The cupboards and refrigerator had used/opened food items (who knows how old)? The biggest issue we had was the owners being at the property 4 out of the 5 days we were there. Several of the days we'd come home from an outing to find a car in the small parking area behind the house which made it very difficult to park. One day in particular, I stayed home with our dog while my husband and kids went to the boardwalk. I was working on the computer and to my surprise, there was a knock at the back door. Before I could get out of the chair, Judith (the owner) was entering the house, even though my very large german sheppard was right there. She continued to come in saying she forgot something that she needed to get (fortunately for her, my dog is well behaved). That same day she was there from about 9:30am until at least 6:30-7:00 at night and during that time there was another car that parked in the space, preventing us from parking there. In our contract, it was stated that the storage unit/computer room is accessed "occasionally"...but it became clear to us that this place is used as an office and they apparently are there every day during the week. On another occasion, Buck called and suggested that the following day would be a good day for an outing because PG&E was coming sometime between 8:00 and Noon and he didn't know how much access they would need. All in all, I would not rent this place again or recommend it to anyone. For what I paid to rent this place...I could have had a really nice hotel close to the beach with daily maid service. IT IS WAY OVERPRICED FOR WHAT IS OFFERS, NOT TO MENTION A COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/7

Let me start by saying this is a charming, pleasant, well-appointed cottage in a great part of Santa Cruz/Capitola, The owners were very nice and accommodating, and there is nothing really misleading at all about the listing. My family of 2 adults, two toddlers and an infant had a very nice stay. Great library of CDs and DVDs, well-stocked kitchen, bikes, boogie boards, wet suits, etc., all very much appreciated. All that said, the cleaning fees, "booking fee," taxes etc. added 45% per night to the quoted base rate. The total was about what you would pay for a room at the Post Ranch in Big Sur or another luxury resort/spa. We felt the total price paid wasn't really reasonable for what we got. Again, a perfectly nice, well equipped little place, but at the end of the day it's a very small, one-room cottage with a Murphy bed + futon, a tiny back yard, a small front porch fronting a street (not the ocean) in a residential neighborhood, and still a drive to the main beaches of the area. The beach that is nearby is a strip of sand at the bottom of a bluff, inaccessible during high tide. The "$10,000 hot tub with colored lights" is nice, but no different than any other above-ground, hose-filled spa you would find at a hundred other VRBO rentals in California. The foosball table was broken, and the gas grill was kind of filthy (no biggie, but still....) Bottom line, it's a charming, lovely little place, and we had a very nice time. If it had cost the base rate + 10% or even 15%, we would have left feeling extremely satisfied and that we got our money's worth. But when you're paying luxury resort rates you start to notice the details, and we left feeling a bit gouged.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway.

Perfect little place for a family of 4. It had everything we needed. Really nice with the hot-tube in the evening! Short distance to the beach and to down town. We really had a great time! Hope to be able to come back another time! Now heading back to Norway. Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

About the owner: Judith is a 5th generation Californian whose Great Grandparents were the lighthouse keepers at Point Loma at the top of the bay of San Diego. Buck lived all over the world with his parents and brothers & sisters as his Dad worked for several embassies in Khartoum Sudan, Thailand, Hong Kong and elsewhere. He retired as a Director for Visa and now enjoys the wonderful surfing world of Santa Cruz.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
We fell in love with this home and the area and entered a bidding war to get it. The letter my husband wrote telling of his life long desire for a cottage by the sea and the best surfing waves convinced the former owners that we were the best people for their neighbors and the area. We enjoy sharing all the fun activities that our guests tell us about in the Guest Log and look forward to you and your group sharing the love and laughter that the Bungalow creates.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Full of laid back luxury, Bucks Beach Bungalow has unique amenities like a $10,000 hot tub with color lights waterfall, fluffy bathrobes, the complete set of the Wizard of Oz books, a shiatsu massage chair that automatically works on your back etc to enhance the relaxation of this wonderful area. Enjoy the power juicer that will let you enjoy all the fresh vegetables and fruits from the nearby Saturday Farmers Market on 17th & Portola. Stroll through the quiet level streets of Pleasure Point and enjoy all the flower gardens. Take a fun bike ride over to the twinkle-light village of Capitola or to the Harbor with its Free Water Taxi on the summer weekends. 15+ restaurants are within walking distance and lots of fun and unique shops are accessed by 41st Ave.
