  We were five to live in the house, two adults and three kids. There were no surprises, everything was as described, and Kevin, the owner, although we did not know when we will arrive there, had everything set for us. This house is in a perfect location, in a quite neighborhood, and close to everything interesting in Berkeley, its university as well as food stores like wholefoods and Berkeley Bowl. If you don't have a car and you are visiting San Francisco, this place is OK since the BART (a kind of metro) is some yards from the house. If you have a car there is plenty of free parking nearby. In short, this is the place we will rent next time in the Bay area we felt like at home, maybe better. I strongly recommend it.

  It was great to come home to unwind in the Essex house after a long day of touring and walking. In a quiet neighborhood. Very convenient to the BART station and Whole Foods market. We walked Telegraph Ave north towards UC Berkeley and explored its shops and restaurants. If you need a car for a day trip to Napa, Enterprise is a couple of blocks away. Kevin's recommendation for Gather restaurant was spot-on; other Berkeley restaurants we tried were Venus and Paste Bene. Our only culinary disappointment was the cancellation of our Chez Panisse reservation due to a fire at that venerable institution :-(.

  What a treat to stay in a real, comfortable home on a business trip. The convenience to BART and to shopping and restaurants is hard to beat. Berkeley Bowl grocery is such a great resource to have right there, and being able to cook your own meals in a well-stocked kitchen means you can make the most of it. Business brings me to Berkeley on a regular basis, and this place will be the first place I check for availability from now on.

  Had a great stay at Kevin's house on Essex St. in Berkeley. It's in a quiet neighborhood very close to the Ashby BART station. Parking is on-street, but we never had a problem finding a space nearby. The house is perfect for four people - two in each of the bedrooms, which are comfortable and fairly large. You could have up to seven people in the house, but it would be a little crowded. The kitchen has everything you need, including a very large refrigerator. The dining room table easily accommodates six people, and there's plenty of furniture in the living room (also a nice sized room). Very nice yard, although we didn't really use it. The upstairs bathroom is big - we suspect it was originally a small bedroom that got converted into a bathroom at some point - with two sinks a tub/shower with very good hot water and water pressure, and a toilet that's a bit tempermental. The downstairs bath has a sink and toilet, along with a great stacking washer/dryer combo that was a nice bonus. Reliable, fast WI-FI Internet connectivity and excellent TVs throughout the house (living room and both BRs). All in all, a very good experience. We'd rent this house again.

  House was just as advertised. We enjoyed our 4 night stay there. The beds were very comfortable. Plenty of room towels blankets quilts. Nice backyard, my sons dog loved laying on small deck. Would stay there again. Did have little trouble with toilets flushing. The house was very pleasant, and very clean. And the Bart station was so close. Parking was $1:00 day there. Thanks debbie

  We spent a week with our two daughters ( 10 and 7 years old) and we liked it! The house was even better than expected: it is nicely arranged, clean and very well maintained. The location is perfect with or without a car: we did both !(the Bart is only two blocks from the house). We especially liked the garden, where we spent quite some time after our days in the city. We'll go back without second thoughts!

  I recently stayed in this house with my husband and dog. The house was perfect. The backyard was lovely and secure for leaving the pouch outside. Only 1 1/2 blocks from the BART station was very convent for my husband to get into work in the city. We will defiantly rent the house again next time we need to be in the bay area.

  My husband and I recently stayed here while he was on a work trip. The house was perfect for us. Only 1 1/2 blocks to Bart made it super easy to commute into the city. The house is very spacious and the back yard is lovely. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

  What a gem. Great, well maintained 2 BR house, ideally located near Ashby BART. Kevin was a great host. Sadly, we didn't get to meet in person, but he was super responsive via email, and we could have called him at any time. Great place for families. Quiet street. Nicely appointed house. Cute backyard. 5 stars. Will definitely come again.

  The Essex house in Berkley was a very nice place to stay during our San Francisco vacation. The property was very clean, had a solid selection of kitchen equipment and a nice backyard. For the price it was awesome! The location is very near a bart station with easy access into the city. There were only a couple of issues that gave me reason to grumble and they were minor. The location of the house was not in the *most* desirable location, but it was safe and for the most part quiet (other than the neighbors annoying dog). Also the water pressure in the shower left a lot to be desire. Both extremely minor annoyances. Overall I would highly recommend this place to stay in Berkley.

  Owner response: I just wanted to address the water pressure issue. Our home....being over 100 years old, did have a water pressure issue in the 2nd floor bath. We had a complete replumb a couple of months ago.....and now the pressure is great!
