Loved it! The bungalow was everything we hoped it would be. The space is intimate and clean. The owner and everyone on the estate was friendly and helpful. Even Peter, the lab, made us feel welcome. There were bicycles and surfboards available for our use. The grounds are glorious. The beach is within walking distance and amenities are minutes away by car. We never wanted to leave! We were there for a wedding at the nearby Turtle Bay resort and everyone who saw pictures of the bungalow was green with envy. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for an intimate, authentic 'home away from home' in Hawaii.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed in the Surf Cabin for 10 days. It was perfectly idyllic. Tucked away up on the hillside amidst the tropical foliage, the cabin looks out over the turquoise water and golden sands of Sunset Beach. Birdsong awakened us each morning and the night music of crickets, geckos, and lizards trilling soothed us to sleep each night along with the rolling surf. It is quiet and secluded and absolutely conducive to the feeling of "getting away from it all". If you are considering staying here I couldn't recommend it more. Do be aware that the walk up (which we found to be not a problem at all) would be challenging to anyone with mobility issues. The environment is lush and tropical so expect lots of critters - birds, bugs, lizards - to visit you. There is a cornucopia of fruit on the property though only the Suriname Cherries were ripe during our stay. Other times you can look forward to bananas, mangoes, papaya, lilikoi - there was even a lone pineapple soaking up the sun! The amenities of the cabin were perfectly serviceable and with the mini-fridge, hot plate, french press and pans/utensils we found it easy to prepare most of our meals thus saving money on eating out. We did, however, make sure to enjoy the many shrimp trucks lining the beaches and a trip to Ted's Bakery for plate lunch is very highly encouraged - that place is onolicious! Fruits purchased from the fruit stands along Kam Hwy were fabulous. Foodland, just a quick trip down the highway, was our source for a lot of our groceries and supplies. There are plenty of activities on the North Shore and we enjoyed the use of the beach cruisers to see the beaches and go snorkeling at Shark's Cove/Pupukea - the best snorkeling I've ever done! Even got to film some sea turtles at close range underwater! Watching sunset from the Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau was also very cool especially as a sudden rain shower caused the entire site to be framed in a perfect rainbow while we were there. Waimea Valley was a treat - particularly swimming in the plunge pool of the waterfall. And a hike out to Kaena point was well rewarded with the rare sighting of Albatross chicks (as big as a dog) and a monk seal sleeping in the tidepool shallows. Our hosts were very friendly and accommodating (promptly replaced a broken french press) and happy to answer any questions and to make suggestions. If you are considering a relaxing, private, tropical vacation filled with simplicity and serenity, this is it!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My friend and I came here for a week, and we had a truly magnificent time. The owners were very gracious, helpful with giving tips, and very generous with their space. We ate fruit from the trees on their property, woke up in the hills to an incredible view and experienced Hawaii from the local perspective. The bungalow was clean and tidy when we arrived, was very comfortable throughout our stay and we always felt very safe. You do need a car to travel around the island, however, because there isn't much public transportation. We felt like we were on some retro Beach Boys film set the entire time. It was magnificent.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 4/4

John's place is a tropical paradise, and he's an absolutely wonderful host. The bungalow is snug, clean, and well-kept, with all you need for a retreat from the world. There's a fridge, hot plate, coffee maker/espresso machine, toaster; sleeping loft and fold-out couch. The deck is huge and features comfy chaises for hanging around and watching the surf break -- and the sunset -- down at Sunset Beach. The grounds are lush and beautiful, and John is super-generous with the amazing fruits (papaya, lilikoi, avocado...) that grow there. You'll never have a better view from the shower, either! John makes bikes, surfboards, and Peter (a lovable Lab) available to those who want to experience more of the North Shore vibe. Yoga on the deck is another can't-miss part of the experience .... Wish I were there right now!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

I can't recommend this place enough. My husband and I stayed here for a week in early June 2011, and it was absolutely perfect. The bungalow is roomier than it looks in the photos and very private. We loved the stunning view, waking up to the bird songs (and sometimes rain) in the trees, our walks down to Sunset Beach in the morning, the local coconut stand and Ted's Bakery, eating Suriname cherries and bananas from the trees on the property, and the bungalow's close proximity to all the best of the North Shore: Waimea, Haliewa, and, of course, the shrimp trucks at Kahuku. During the heat of the day, the bungalow was a cool, shady reprieve, and at night, we could watch the sunset directly from the porch. We rarely ate out, as the kitchenette was well-stocked with plates, utensils, and pans, and the hot-plate worked surprisingly well for cooking everything we needed! John was very welcoming and friendly, as were his tenants. You'll definitely get a work-out climbing the stairs to the bungalow, but it's worth the climb. We will definitely be back -- we wish we were there right now!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We just came back from a week stay at this wonderful bungalow. It was purely magical, beautiful and peaceful. Every morning we woke up to the sound of birds in the surrounding trees and a breathtaking view of Sunset Beach. John and Peter (his dog) were wonderful and provided us with local fruit grown on the property, surfboards and bikes. We will definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to our friends. Thanks for a wonderful vacation!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

What a find. My friend found John's place on the internet. Once we arrived we knew we were in the right place. It is so unique and totally private with a beautiful view of the ocean, high up on a hill surrounded by trees and plants. The 100 stone steps to get to the "cabin" were worth it for this outstanding experience. Everything you need for comfort was there. John treated us like family and was generous and kind. It is located in a nice neighborhood and I knew my car would be safe parked on the property behind a gate. Best place I've stayed. I would highly recommend it for anyone who can walk up steps and would love a retreat. It was a wonderful stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

This unique bungalow on the hill has everything that I wanted. Quiet, clean, secluded, lots of windows, cannot see neighbors, yet walk to the ocean, and a walking path next to the beach that is shaded and long, a natural food store and cafe a few miles away. Bus stop is located in walking distance, every 1/2 hour. The owner was the best, including helping us carry food, bags whatever up the stairs. I am well over 55 and had no problem with the 100 stairs (good exercise). Next year we plan to go back for a longer stay, and I would recommend this place to any of my friends. Enjoy!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

Stayed here a week in Mid-May. The cabin is located in a wonderful part of the island with the most incredible view and close to the best beaches on the island.. Waikik-who?! The place has some quirks, but all charming. 100 craggy steps make for a fun adventure the first couple times you scale them, they're really a piece of cake and good warm up for the day of swimming and hiking you'll be doing all around! John is a really awesome host, who's super easy-going and will pepper each conversation with a smile and an offer for some fresh grown fruit! The deck is amazing, the view is perfection. The space is perfect for a couple - very romantic! The loft bed was a bit claustrophobic for us, but the pulldown couch made the perfect bed. Highly suggest you stay here if you want a romantic, beautiful, slightly adventurous, and ridiculously relaxing Hawaiian Holiday!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
