Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2010
Bryan and Jill Updyke love the outdoors, kayaking, and indigenous history and art. That's why we built these TENT CABINS. People can be closer to nature, get outdoors, and learn about the people who first inhabited this island. We also noticed that people with a small budget needed affordable lodging. During the 21 years we've lived on island, we've discovered some of the most amazing places. In fact, after many years of searching, Bryan discovered the location of the fabled "Maroon Cave", and was one of the original trailblazers of the Sweet Bottom trail to the Tidal Pools. We spend our free time in the woods, or in a kayak. We would like to show you the island, the local way! Stay in one of four of our tent cabins, while enjoying the very happening North Shore of St Croix. Whether you do the Adventure Package or just rent a cabin, we believe you will love this area.
Why the Owner Chose Cane Bay
Your TENT CABIN is down the trail, under the tropical canopy, 2 minutes from the beach on foot. St Croix, and especially Cane Bay, offers a very laid back atmosphere to enjoy. You feel away from it all, but you are just a few steps from the beach, restaurants and a lively neighborhood of locals. While still growing in popularity, Cane Bay and the surrounding neighborhood are a sure bet for anyone who wants to experience the caribbean in an authentic way. We liken it to PLAYA DEL CARMEN 20 YEARS AGO! It's the place to be.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
If you like: you can snorkel and dive one of the best spots in the Caribbean; you have the benefit of building your own fire to cook on at your private campsite; you can hike a private nature trail on the 101 acres of Cane Bay Plantation; swing in your hammock at your campsite; catch your very own lobster and grill it on your grill; hike to secluded beaches nearby. Kayak to remote coves that most Crucians haven't seen. Stay in a private campground in THE SPOT on ST Croix! You are only steps away from the best beach on St Croix!

Oh my!... what a different holiday from the usual hotel-hopping variety, yet all of the comforts you really need are provided for you, including lovely bed sheets and soft/fluffy towels. We booked the adventure package and I'm so glad. Some of my personal highlights - iguana's hanging on branches in mangrove forests, eagle ray's flying out of the water and diving back in right in front of your kayak, sea turtles popping their heads up to check you out and watching the live jungle movie surrounding you every morning you have your coffee.... Great Memories! I truly enjoyed this unusual holiday. Jill and Bryan are a very warm couple that make you feel very welcome...and if you're as lucky as us you'll meet other really nice campers to share this great experience with.

My husband and I stayed at Cane Bay Campground for our anniversary and did the Eco Adventure Week with Jill & Bryan. The campground is in a great location - close to the beach (as in walk-able and I could hear the waves crashing while laying in bed in the morning) and several restaurants; however, the cabins were nestled back in the woods so we could get away from it all when we wanted to. As promised, the cabin had everything we needed for the week of "pampered camping" - comfy bed, table, chairs, lanterns, a fan, dishes, cooler, etc. The campsite had a picnic table, grill, fire ring and (my favorite) a hammock. The camp store sold everything we could need for a week of camping, including water, snacks, coffee, drinks, fire wood, propane, and all kinds of food. The showers and bathrooms were the cleanest I've ever experienced while camping. Don't be scared off by the cool water shower - it felt lovely after a day in the sun! Of course, this is still camping and we were out in Nature and so we got to see our fair share of “wildlife” at the campground including, deer, mongoose & chickens foraging around the campsite. I particularly enjoyed watching and listening to the little lizards play on the tarp roof in the early morning sun. As part of the Eco Adventure Week, Jill & Bryan took us out every morning for a different excursion - kayaking, snorkeling and/or hiking. Their enthusiasm for the island and the local environment was both informative and infectious. They were ready to answer any question, point out interesting things and share in the fun. My husband really enjoyed the snorkeling (he spotted a ray while were out at Green Key) and I loved hiking to, and then swimming around in, the Tidal Pool. We were back at Cane Bay by early afternoon each day so we had plenty of low-key beach bum time as well. Our week at Cane Bay was an excellent adventure – relaxing but active, peaceful but fun. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a Caribbean vacation outside the normal cruise/resort route. If you enjoy camping, you will love Cane Bay Campground.

It's hard to find something that hasn't been said before although I can't say I lost weight (must have been the painkillers at EAT. This was a great vacation. We did the adventure package and it was well worth it. For 5 days Jill and Bryan took us to interesting and beautiful sights around St. Croix. It was like a magical mystery tour. We had no idea where we were going and enjoyed every trip. The cabin was comfortable and homey. We didn't rent a car but found everything we needed at the commissary on site and the restaurants nearby. Jill and Bryan were fun, helpful, informative and made us feel like family. I heartily recommend Campground at Cane Bay .

If you like (semi-roughing it) camping, this is the place to be on St. Croix! The campsites feel secluded and private, but at the same time they are within a short walking distance to a beautiful beach and several restaurants/bars. I really liked the futon bed in the cabin – it was very comfortable and it allowed me to get a good night’s sleep each night - as opposed to sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag which can get old after a few days :). Also, it was really nice having access to the commissary at the campground, where Jill and Bryan have stocked it with anything/everything you would ever need – sunscreen, meat, ice, batteries, canned goods, flashlights, eggs, beer, etc. (and at very reasonable prices). When I booked the trip I was a little concerned about the “cool showers”, but the showers ended up being just fine…a little cool at first, but it’s so warm on the island that it only took 15-30 seconds to adjust to the temperature of the showers. They have a nice set-up with the bathrooms/showers, so I never had a problem getting in when I needed to. I would definitely recommend signing up for the full adventure package. Bryan and Jill took me on some great kayak/hiking trips which were both informative and really fun!! You couldn’t ask for better hosts – they ROCK!!

Our best vacation ever. We greatly enjoyed the tropical breezes, amazing snorkeling on the reef, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of Virgin Kayak Campground and Cane Bay beach. Bryan and Jill were wonderful hosts and were always asking how we were and were constantly doing things to make our stay more enjoyable. Bryan's knowledge of the history of St. Croix and the native indigenous peoples, as well as his concern for preserving the natural beauty of St Croix were inspiring. The cabins provided everything we needed and were well within our budget. A great "money wise" way to spend a week on St Croix. Remember though, you are in a tent cabin in the tropical jungle. So if a bug makes you scream and climb the nearest chair, then camping in St. Croix might not be for you. Of course there was so much to do we pretty much only used the cabins for sleeping. Hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, sight seeing, shell hunting, beach bumming, campfires, and all kinds of wonderful scenic places to eat within walking distance of the camp kept us busy. This was the first vacation where we actually LOST weight! Thanks Bryan ad Jill for a wonderful Caribbean experience. We're already planning our next trip to St. Croix and hope to find some friends to bring along with us.

We loved the tent nestled in the woods, the birds and visiting chickens, the occasional deer crossing the path and the sounds of the ocean waves at night. We were there in mid March 2011 and the moon was full. As it moved across the top of our cabin, the shadows from the trees moved and changed as if we had our own nature TV screen! We cooked a lot of our meals on the cook stove Jill provided us but we were there at the wrong time of the year and fresh food was limited. The restaurant on the property was wonderful; good food reasonably priced with a great view of the ocean across the street. i was lucky enough to go kayaking with Bryan one morning and i loved that experience. The kayaks are very modern and easy to maneuver, even for someone who is 60! The snorkeling in Cane Bay was not quite as spectacular as the Australian Great Barrier Reef but I only snorkeled one day and didn't see as much s I could have with more swimming. Don't take your computer or cell phone! Access is possible but very limited. This is a great place to relax and get away from it all. I even got used to taking afternoon showers when the sun had heated my black solar water bag so I could have a hot shower. Jill and Bryan have done a lot to make this place comfortable, cozy and memorable. I have already recommened it to several of my friends. It is NOT touristy and that is what we liked most about it. It is a very natural setting with good food and an upbeat atmosphere. I especially liked the owners' interest in history of the island. Columbus really was a jerk.
Owner response:Thank you for your comments Cheyenne. Bryan and I enjoyed spending time with you guys, and getting to know you a little bit. The tent cabins provide an intimate setting, where folks can get back to nature and get to know eachother better.
