Charming Cottage on Freshwater Pond with Sandy Swimming Area
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This 'change house', one of the oldest in the area built more than 90 years ago to provide a freshwater swim after salt and sand, started with three simple rooms: a main room with a native stone fireplace and two changing rooms upstairs. It still has the original main room and the rustic stairs, so several additions and a recent renovation have created a modern and charming cottage. The main room is the living and dining area (a/c, table seats 10). Also on the first floor: master BR with private full bath; twin BR; full bathroom; large modern kitchen (granite counters, ice maker, microwave, china, glassware, cooking gear, washer/dryer nook); bright, sunny sun porch.
Second floor has queen BR & twin BR (both a/c), large full bathroom, DirecTV room with window seat, VCR, DVD, libraries. House is Wifi, also has fax.
Brick patio has teak furniture, is surrounded by roses, heather, ornamental bushes. Sidewalk runs past outdoor shower thru lawn to path under trees to pond with boardwalk to swimming float, near brick patio for picnics. Lawn for croquet game. Woods between both adjacent properties.
Sunfish sailboat, 2 kayaks, rowboat, diving float in deep water, and horseshoe pitch shared with property next door.

We had a fantastic experience spending a week in June'12 at this property. The cottage had everything we needed, it has a charming country look and the surrounding area is very quiet. The property owner made sure our needs are met, we followed his recommendations regarding the local seafood markets, and surely we were not disappointed. Fresh fish is hard to beat. Kids loved the place, there are canoes, bikes, and a huge freshwater lake. Almost every night we had a delight to see a wild rabbit hanging out in a beautiful backyard. We've truly enjoyed our time in Cape Cod and hope to come back again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We had a very nice week here. The cottage is extremely well stocked with high quality items, and very clean. The pond is very clear and lovely to swim in; also there is a beach on the sound about 10 minutes away and national seashore beach (we went to Nauset) about 20 minutes away. We saw seals swimming at Nauset in the early evening and collected some pretty stones. Our dog enjoyed the nearby conservation area where dogs can be let off leash (about a 1/4 mile from the house). The owners are extremely friendly and helpful.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

The cottage is absolutely lovely and extremely well-appointed. Our group of 6 couldn't have been happier with the indoor & outdoor spaces, the beautiful landscaping and backyard & the perfect location (tranquil yet easy access to local shopping etc). Ted & Pam couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Would definitely recommend.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We enjoyed a small family holiday at the Cottage. The site photos really do not do it justice-it is a charming and lovely place. Because we stayed over Thanksgiving the kitchen was well used-I have rented many places through vrbo and similar sites over the years and the Cottage had by far the best equiped kitchen of any. The sole item we could have used, and could not find, was a pastry cutter-but granted that is a fairly obscure gadget. The location was very convenient. The surroundings beautiful. We wouldn't hestitate to stay there again and would happily recommend it to our friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We found this to be a wonderful place for our family of four to stay. The owners, who live next door (but not too close), are good-natured, happy to help, and eager to accommodate. They used to live in the house they now rent, and it shows; there are many thoughtful touches -- a big collection of books and a smaller but still good collection of movies; attractively furnished bedrooms, back porch, and back patio; and access down a short path to a pond where a pair of kayaks and a rowboat are available for use. We had a lot of fun with those. The location is also excellent -- quiet street, about five minutes from each of two good supermarkets, about five minutes from Cape Cod league baseball, about five minutes from a couple of good family restaurants and world-class ice cream, about ten minutes from a couple of good beaches, and fifteen minutes from downtown Chatham if you want the more extensive downtown area and other attractions that it has to offer. All things considered, a really great place for a vacation on the Cape. Our last step upon leaving was to reserve it for the same dates next year.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers.

absolutely fabulous place to stay in beautiful cape cod. truly tranquil; the beautiful pictures of the landscape and pond don't even do it justice. we rented this cottage for a college friend's wedding in nearby dennis. it was perfect for our needs. we are already planning a trip in the future! we enjoyed sipping coffee on the patio while overlooking the pond out back, taking a morning ride in the kayak while watching the sun come up and just enjoying time with friends in a beautiful, charming cottage. i HIGHLY recommend this cottage for your stay in cape cod.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We were looking for a peaceful cottage in which to get away after the Christmas holidays and the bustle of the city. We found this cottage on VRBO and were able to stay in it for 5 days. We absolutely loved it! It was so peaceful, charming, warm, and homey, and the owners were an absolute delight to work with. There were only two of us, but the house is large enough to hold quite a few people. The scenery is beautiful and John Joseph Road is a quiet street. We will definitely be returning - winter or summer!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My husband and I rented the cottage for two wonderful, relaxing weeks in August. The location is very private and there are lovely views of the pond from the terrace, porch, and master bedroom. The cottage is charmingly decorated and has a well appointed kitchen. Although there were only two of us most of the time, we invited three couples to join us for a five day "big chill" weekend during the middle of our stay. There was plenty of room for all and everyone was very comfortable. We have rented several pond front houses and cottages in Chatham and Harwich over the last 25 years, but this cottage is by far our favorite with it's combination of old Cape Cod charm and updated kitchen and bathrooms.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Everything about this cottage is extrordinary. It is a blend of old Cape Cod and modern conveniences. My husband and I have stayed here and have enjoyed the quiet evenings and the busy pond days. Bike trail is close by through Thompson's Field and the kayaks allow for a leisurely exploration of the ponds. It is close to shopping and theatre. There is even a ferry to Nantucket and wonderful restaurants. Salt water beaches are close, but we never want to leave the pond. The cottage will easily accommodate an extended family for vacation. We look forward to inviting more friends to enjoy this retreat.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Our family rented this cottage with friends at the end of August 2010. Best vacation ever! We were 4 adults and 4 girls and the house felt spacious. Lots of nooks and crannies for the girls to explore indoors and they were ecstatic about the pond, "pond toys" and tree house. The kitchen is a wonderful size and well equipped with lots of counter space. The outdoor shower is beautiful and really came in handy! The attention to detail in the property is unique. We can’t wait to go back.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1992
About the owner: We rented this cottage 37 years ago, purchased it 22 years ago; enlarged, renovated, updated it while spending summers here until we retired nearby five years ago. Our children learned to swim, sail, and catch frogs here, and now bring their friends here before and after the season. We can't wait for grandchildren! So we look forward to welcoming you, and wish for you as happy a time in the cottage as we had.
Why the Owner Chose Harwich:
We rented this cottage in 1975 and then again in 1991 because of family and friends in the neighborhood; after the 1991 rental, our children loved the cottage and swimming, we had wonderful family memories, and friends, authors and writers who borrowed it loved it, so we bought it. The friends who had visited it describe it as charming, lovely, quiet, private, unusual.
Movies, upscale shopping, musical theater, gourmet food and grocery stores, antiques, museums - ten to 30 minutes away.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Velvety, clear water; nearest neighbors swim 100 yards away and grandchildren are the voices to be heard. Lie on the private swim float at night: shooting stars are not uncommon and the sky is a million points of light. In the daytime, the cottage is invisible from the pond because of the white pines and hardwood trees we planted over the years. Sit on the patio, and there is nothing more private or quiet; we have to look hard to see another house.
