Barra de Navidad is a small town on the beautiful Costalegre section of Mexico's west coast, situated about four hours south of Puerto Vallarta by car or bus, and just half an hour taxi ride from the Manzanillo airport. The town is sustained by fishing and tourism. Although there is a small year round gringo population, which naturally swells during the tourist season, Barra is truly a Mexican town where Mexican nationals bring their families for vacation. There are many excellent restaurants, and some fun night life in Barra, but it's a much quieter and less commercial town than the larger Mexican resort cities. Sport fishing is also a big draw, with several annual fishing tourneys and many fishing captains available to take you out any time.
There are many places to explore. Melaque, at the other end of Bahia Navidad, Cuastecomates, La Manzanilla, and Tenacatita - all to the north of Barra offer a change of pace and some unique sights. Be sure to visit the crocodiles in La Manzanilla, about a 20 minute bus or taxi ride north of Barra. Barra de Navidad is a destination for those looking for a quiet, relaxing time in an authentic Mexican town on a beautiful stretch of coast line with near perfect weather during the season.
Casa Vista Bonita is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, spacious top floor duplex on the entry canal into the Barra canal system. As the name implies, it really does have pretty views. Looking toward the southwest, just across the lagoon, and in the state of Colima, is the Grand Bay hotel. It is a really spectacular view when lit up at night. As you face more directly west there are views of the lagoon, of the malecon (the jetty where the Pacific and the lagoon meet) and the beach, umbrellas, and restaurants on the lagoon side of the sand bar for which Barra de Navidad was named. Just below you, right on the canal in the backyard is the pool, palapa, and sunning area. There is a platform dock on the canal for taking the water taxi to and from town. To the east, just across the street, is a unique ecosystem that features a shallow lagoon that serves as a sanctuary to a variety of birds, but is dominated by incredible white egrets. The lagoon is fed during the rainy season, from June through October, but it will ultimately dry up during the course of the tourist season when there is rarely any rainfall. So, those visiting Barra earlier in the season may have a chance at some spectacular sunrises and bird watching.
The pool and canal-facing back yard are shared space with the lower unit’s year round tenants and there are neighbors on either side – use the area anytime, just be respectful. No loud late night or early morning conversations or play.
Occupancy is limited to one couple Occasional guests are welcome, but this full season rental is being offered to a quiet single person or couple who will respect the privacy of the owners or other guests in the downstairs unit.
Enjoy your season, have a few margaritas, relax with your friends or family, party in town, but the shared area is not for loud or hard partiers.

Our family attended a wedding on Isle de Navidad over the holidays. Casa Vista Bonita was perfectly located to enjoy the nuptual activities and local culture. The water taxi is delightful and dependable transportation. The french baker's early arrival meant fresh pastries each morning. Joe was helpful when we needed him, but that was hardly ever because the house was thoughtfully prepared and accessorized. There was even beer on our arrival. Thanks!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

WE just returned from a fun stay in Barra de Navidad. Joe and Linda's place was prefect for us and a friend. The place was clean, well laid out and we love the tile work everywhere. The back porch with a view toward town was a great breakfast spot to start the day. Nice, quite spot in a beautiful little town.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We have stayed at Casa Vista Bonita two years in a row and will be back again for sure. It is a very comfortable, clean and convenient casa with an excellent view and all the amenities one needs. I recently returned from my first trip to Mexico. After the first day I was seriously considering how to lose my return ticket and extend my stay indefinitely. When we walked in Casa Vista Bonita, we were greeted by a spacious, beautiful, clean condo with a classy Mexican flare. The condo has all the amenities you need to ensure you can really relax and unwind while your there. Washer and dryer, fresh water, a wonderfully stocked kitchen, great entertainment system, not to mention a lovely swimming pool on the back patio. The condo is located on the canal system and the screened-in patio provides lovely views of the bay, beach, birds and passing fishing boats. At night the beautiful hotel across the bay is lit up like a huge sparkling wedding cake and is a beautiful scene to gaze upon while falling asleep. Barra is a small town, and as such, getting around is easy. We enjoyed walks to the beach, shopping trips on bike and water taxi rides to dinner departing from our very own dock on the canal (what could possibly be more convenient?). What was really wonderful about our stay at Casa Buena Vista was that it was truly relaxing. If laid back is what you're after, this is it. You're set up with everything you need to relax and enjoy those precious vacation days. This vacation didn't fly by, we got to savor it. For the last several years we've been vacationing in Kauai, but this place stole our heart. When we come back to Mexico we will come back to Barra de Navidad, and hopefully be able to stay at Casa Vista Bonita.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

We would like to recommend Casa Vista Bonita. We stayed there this past April 2011 and immediately we were taken back by the spaciousness and cleanliness. All amenities were in good working order. Not only did it exceed our expectations but it also had many other gems.. such as being quiet,close to town,on the water,private pool just to name a few. Joe, the gentlemen who is the owner helped us in so many ways; translating for us, answering questions and making sure all our needs were met on a daily basis. As two woman we felt safe and comfortable in knowing he was available to assist and assure that our vacation time was memorable. We highly recommend this place for couples, a girls get away and lets not forget our seniors.. you will not be disappointed. We look forward to coming back next year 2012... and have no reservation to tell our friends, family and coworkers if they are looking for a great place to stay while traveling in Barra de Navidad to not look any further... We have just returned after an 8 day stay at Casa Vista Bonita. We've been traveling to this area twice a year for the last 5 years. This was our first time at Casa Vista Bonita. It will not be our last. The home is perfectly appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed if we had wanted to make our meals (which we did not), the dining and living area was spacious with plenty of comfortable seating and floor space. Flat screen t.v., air condt that worked very well (only needed at night time). The screened porch was a nice spot to take a rest in the afternoon out of the sun. Loved the pool area and palapa. The house and pool were "ultra clean". Not a single bug of any sort in the house the entire stay. The view from the house was great. The house has a unique setting at the end of the entry canal. This gives a great view to the lagoon area, Grand Bay Hotel, and out to the Ocean in the distance. The water taxi was a great mode of transportation to town if we got tired of the walk to and from town. It takes about 10 to 15 min. to walk into town, 2 min. by water taxi. We found plenty of supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, beach towels, kitchen towels, dish detergent, washing/dryer supplies. We have often stayed in places where we end up having to purchase some of these things because there is a bare minimum upon arrival. Our Host was so accommodating for our every need. I would recommend this place to anyone. We cannot wait to return.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We had a great one week stay in this upper floor condo which was even better than expected. The bird life, sea life and town life were great and we were never short of things to do. This property has to be one of the best in Barra de Navidad and we instantly made friends with the neighbours and the owner. If I was retired I would stay here for good. The condo had great sunset views and several places where four people could eat, relax or concentrate on the next margarita. About the owner: We built our home in Barra on the entry canal and have lived here since 2004. Joe retired in 2008, and as sailors, we enjoy the access to the Pacific that living on the canal provides. Barra is a great vacation spot and a great place to live year round.
Why the Owner Chose Barra de Navidad:
There is just one house between our home and Casa Vista Bonita. It is the top floor of a duplex whose bottom unit we already owned. In 2010, we had the opportunity to buy the upper unit, with the idea of providing a vacation rental for couple(s) or families that enjoy a home, rather than hotel environment, and who love being on the water. The outstanding views at this canal location are a real bonus.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
The condo is spacious at over 1,600 sq. ft. (155 sq. mtrs.), with a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. It's equipped with cable TV, WiFi and ethernet internet connections, and DVD/CD player. Along with the views, there is a large back yard right on the canal with a pool, palapa, and sunning area. It is a shared area with the lower unit tenants. There's also a platform dock for taking the water taxi into town and beaches (less than a minute travel time), or over to the restaurants in nearby Colimilla. A VHF radio is provided for calling the water taxis right to the dock.
