Great Barrington house description
AS FEATURED IN FEB 2013 COUNTRY LIVING MAGAZINE!
Sleek as a sailboat, with wide 70' decks in front and back, “Brook Haus” sits at the edge of a whitewater stretch of the Umpachene River, 5 minutes from secluded Umpachene Falls. The site offers complete privacy, with a long winding drive leading through towering pines to a parklike setting - a big, sunny south-facing clearing with distant field and river views.
This dazzling 3BR/3BA home is the latest effort from Hauswork Home Design, done in the style of a Scandinavian summer retreat, with long wraparound decks, expansive open-plan rooms clad in warm white wood, soaring fieldstone fireplace and gourmet kitchen. The property features over 1000' of river frontage, a one-acre hayfield, rolling lawns, and park-like grounds.
Inside, sunlight splashes everywhere through 80-foot banks of architectural glass. The island kitchen is a cook’s dream, featuring top-of-the-line everything: 8-burner Viking range, Sub-Zero fridge, Miele d/w, Bulthaup cabinetry. Gorgeous English elm countertops and stainless Kohler sinks; espresso bar and recycling center. A pair of master bedrooms both function as suites, with king beds. The third bedroom is a flexible suite with king or two XL twins.
All finishes are hotel-quality and new. The dining room features an iconic white-marble Saarinen table with collectible “Gaudi” armchairs, plus a mix of mid-century touches and the latest lighting/accessories. Textures run to imported French linen, high-thread count sheets, 800-gram Egyptian-cotton toweling.
Amenities include jetted jacuzzi tub, oversize steam shower, wood-fired hot tub (riverside!) not one but two incredible hammocks (also riverside) and assorted picnic tables, lounge and Adirondack chairs. The stream runs cold and clear year-round, with multiple spots for swimming or wading. There is a park at Umpachene Falls with swimming hole and waterfall within 5 mins. walking distance.
Brook Haus sleeps 6 in beds, plus room for the occasional overnight visitor on one of three couches. Activities include swimming, hiking, fishing, XC skiing and canyoning. Spectacular Umpachene Falls is just a 1/2-mile stroll down the river. Three minutes away the Southfield Store is a destination restaurant; Ski Butternut is ten minutes away via country road. Great Barrington, recently named #1 Small Town in America by Smithsonian Magazine, is an 15 easy minutes through gorgeous farm-and-country scenery. Tanglewood, shopping and museums are easy striking distance.

This house is perfect. Spotless, stylish, and very very comfortable. We have gotten in the habit of spending long weekends here, it is so serene and beautiful, nature in every direction, bright sun, deep forest, and the sparkling whitewater in the brook. Also, we appreciate its user-friendly layout for seniors. We LOVE it!

This house was so beautiful. I had the pleasure of staying with 6 friends. From the view to the beds, everything about this place was a amazing. I plan to be back with my family. The photo's really don't show how beautiful this house is, everything was clean, and well maintained. We enjoyed wonderful wood fired pizza's from Baba Louie's.

We stayed at Brook Haus in May 2011 and it was an incredible (if just too short!) stay. Everything is as stated. The beds were soooo comfortable, the house was beautiful and so well appointed, the accomodations overall were immaculate, comfortable and very tasteful. Everyone in our party was impressed and we all hope to make return visits!
