My house is a five-story 1895 townhouse on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I had the ornate brownstone facade restored recently. It has eight apartments (I occupy the garden apartment). The house is part of a neighborhood of townhouses on the side streets, large multiple dwellings on the avenues, occasional grand apartment buildings on Central Park West, and some notable institutions such as the Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center dotted around the neighborhood. The area is well served by buses and subways, with a large population of restaurants of many different ethnicities and varying levels of sophistication. No area of Manhattan is far away in time or difficult to reach.

On the positive side. Great location. Close to Central Park, museums, subways, and numerous quaility restaurants. Charming neighborhood and building on the outside. Inside the apartment, the beds were comfortable, linens clean and plentiful, nice HD TVs. On the negative side. The bathroom was quite tired and dirty by most peoples standards. The shower and tile surround were dirty/moldy. Water pressure in the shower was also quite low, so it was challenging to get rinsed off. Used bar of soap and open containers in the refrigerator were also a big turn off. These items should be removed after each guest leaves. I liked the neighborhood, but unfortunately I think I would look for another rental rather than this one..Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car.
Owner response: I hire professional cleaners, but they must have missed the old bar of soap (I provide soft soap in plastic containers with pumps in the kitchen and bathroom.) The tiles are old, but I like them. I do ask the cleaners to leave some items in the fridge for people who would rather not have to buy a whole container of, say, mustard or ketchup for a few days stay. Most guests are grateful; a very few are offended as was this one. The water pressure comment is a mystery to me: it is the City of New York that supplies the gravity-fed water and unless there is extraordinary local demand (multiple use of fire hydrants at one time, for example) the pressure is about 40 lbs, even on the fourth floor. I'm sorry he had a bad experience: I much prefer happy guests!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful brownstone. We wanted to give our two young kiddos a flavor of NYC and this was the perfect spot. The apartment has plenty of space, great air conditioning, lots of cheerful sunlight, and fully stocked kitchen. It felt very safe and quiet. The location cannot be beat; extremely close to Central Park, subway, crosstown bus, Museum of Natural History, Zabar's, and lots of great restaurants. Alec was extremely helpful and responsive. We hope to come back and explore more!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am pleased they had a good experience.

This location is perfect for anyone visiting NYC. This was our first New York experience and the location and amenities were perfect for a group of girlfriends who traveled across the country to meet for a holiday. Sightseeing was on mine & my daughter's agenda while the others loved the shopping experience. The location to great restaurants, the Museum of Natural History, Central Park and the subway was perfect. We arrived first and Alex was a great host and very helpful with directions. His favorite market ZABAR's, which we all agreed was a must! was worth the visit. A great neighborhood, very friendly & safe. We will be back!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Again, I am delighted they enjoyed their stay

Feel at home away from home. The location of this spacious apartment cannot be beat- literally minutes away from the Museum of Natural History and part of a comfortable neighbourhood with shops and stores to satisfy your every need. The kitchen is a delight, the beds are comfortable, Alec is a welcoming and kind host and available to help. We would not want to stay anywhere else on our next visit to New York. Book early as it is popular! Anne, John & Alexander (Ontario, Canada)Owner response: Kind words - I am delighted they enjoyed their stay.

My husband and I shared this apartment with friends of ours and their 5 year old. It's in a fantastic location: easy access to two subway lines, across the street from the planetarium and museum, easy access to Central Park for a morning run. The proprietor was super friendly and helpful, and gave us great restaurant recommendations (there are several good, affordable, choices right in the neighborhood). The apartment was spacious and very quiet from the street, although you can hear neighbors above and in the hall. Typical for these old buildings I'm sure. Bed was comfy, bath was dated but we had plenty of hot water and water pressure. Would definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I'm glad they enjoyed my short term rental apartment - it IS well located. But I am puzzled by the "bath was dated" remark: the tub, toilet, and vanity are modern.

I recently stayed at this property with my sister and her 3 teenage kids and absolutely loved it. I have stayed a several VRBO's and guest houses in NYC and this is my favorite. It is clean, spacious and the kitchen is the biggest I have ever seen in NYC (and unbelievably equipped too). I am (was) a huge fan of the Greenwich Village area, however I am now an Upper West Side convert, this area is right by Central Park it's so peaceful and beautiful, it's very close to the subway and surrounded by lots of great restaurants/shops etc. Alec was an amazing host who really made us feel welcome. You will not be disappointed with this location.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am so pleased they had a good time! I did go all-out with the kitchen equipment - I was so bothered by the hotels around here that offered "kitchens" with a few cheap aluminum pots and pans and the like. Cuisinart stainless steel cooking set for me! I wanted a kitchen where I would like to cook - and I'm picky. (And save money on restaurants for breakfasts and lunches!)

This apartment was the best we have rented in our frequent visits to the Upper West Side. It was very clean, with very spacious living room and kitchen. Bedroom had very adequate storage. Ideal for a couple, but children could sleep in the trundle bed in the living room. Apartment faced south so lots of light in the living room, and very quiet. Kitchen extremely well-equipped. Cross-town bus stop on 81st is one block away; Museum of Natural History and Planetarium two blocks away. Description and photos in the listing very accurate. Two flights of interior stairs to reach apartment not difficult, but could be drawback for some visitors. We would certainly recommend this to relatives and friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: The "trundle bed" is in fact a Murphy (vertical) bed off the Living room (see in "photos"). And the Museum of Natural History is just across Columbus Avenue, but what quibbles in the favor of her assessment, for which I am grateful.

We were four adults and it was perfect with the bed in the bedroom and the one in the living room, very comfortable. The apartment is very well equipped and also very well located, next to Central Park and with Columbus Ave and Amsterdam Ave offering a great choice of stores and restaurants. Alec was really nice and he even offered us help carrying our luggage to the cab the day we were leaving.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: But my heart doctor wasn't pleased about the luggage - I had a quadruple bypass in January.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1969
About the owner: I bought this house 42 years ago because I was tired of moving around the world as a youngster - my parents were in the diplomatic corps and every two years we were in a different part of the world. In my career, I've been active in real estate activities involving rehabilitation and the use of alternative energy. My house is the first NYC townhouse to have a solar hot water system - 1976 - and it still works!
Why the Owner Chose Upper West Side:
At the time, I could only afford this dicey neighborhood, but I figured it would improve. And it has - a whole lot!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Safety, day and night; convenience to major Museum attractions, Lincoln Center, and Central Park; transportation up, down, and across town by bus and subway; Zabars and Fairway nearby; a slew of different restaurants from Sarabeth's to Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, Peruvian, Spanish, Indian, etc;
