Ouray Vacation Penthouse Suitenew & Private with Best Views!
- Minimum stay:2-3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This brand new penthouse suite 1000 sq ft + is located on the top third floor of the newly-built Ouray Alchemist building in the heart of town. Bi-directional pleated shades offer the right combination of breathtaking 360 degree surrounding mountain views with just the right amount of privacy desired. It is the perfect romantic haven for enjoying the numerous activities in the adventurous Ouray area.
There is a 400 sq ft deck that gives you private views of the Chief Ouray Mine, Cascade Falls, the Amphitheatre and Twin Peaks. In addition there is a small breakfast balcony facing Main Street with a giant Douglas fir just to the south providing shade and privacy to those who want to see what is going on around town.
The Ouray Alchemist is a long-time project for Curtis and Nancy. Curt has been collecting pharmacy artifacts for many years. The commercial space features a historical collection of pharmacy memorabilia dating back to 350 BC. The collection is a tribute to the history of pharmacy, containing many hand-blown label-under-glass bottles with the original drugs (herbs and roots) with an emphasis toward mining and Colorado pharmacy history (such as the oldest written prescription in Colorado). It is a memorable tribute to pharmacy worth seeing during your stay. Pharmacists Curt and Nancy will do the best to make your visit well worth it. The Ouray Alchemist, what we call our retail area and museum, has just been featured on the cover of Bottles and Extras - Jan/Feb issue along with an article. We are also having an article written about us in GV Magazine. This stands for Grand Valley and is mainly distributed around the Grand Junction area. Grand Junction is just a two hour drive from Ouray.
The Ouray Alchemist building is unique to the Ouray area. Enjoy the whimsical finial portraying the sun, moon and stars. The gargoyles positioned on the four corners of the copper-domed tower by tradition offer protection and happiness to those who enjoy this incredible suite.

We just spent two days here. It is hard to write this without it sounding phony. But it really is an amazing place to stay. First of all, you have the town of Ouray itself which is an alpine jewel hidden away in the San Juan Mountains. Then you have the suite with views that you have to see to believe. As you lie in bed looking thru the towering windows, your view of the amphitheater, a volcanic remnant, is astounding. You can also see the moon rising and meteors streaking thru these windows. On the other side of the suite, your view of main street, from your 3rd story vantage point, is fun too. Lastly, the owners Nancy and Curt are great hosts. The suite will be spotless and comfortable. The in-floor heat means you may never leave! A private garage is a treat. Be sure also to visit the pharmacy museum on the first floor which is the largest in Colorado and in the top 5 nationally. All in all, a most wonderful experience!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Steve and Fay, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed staying at the penthouse and hope you will come back and stay again soon. It is our goal to keep the penthouse as clean, comfortable and relaxing as we can, so we appreciate your comments. Nancy

This penthouse is unique and stylish in a great location, which separates the VRBO gems from just another place to stay. A great vacation is an memorable experience, and the Ouray Alchemist penthouse helps make it an experience. The views are great, as the pictures show. Some of my favorites: watching Venus and the moon rise above the crescent of the mountain ridge (I'm an early riser) through the bedroom windows and seeing a storm front come through with clouds and mist billowing through the mountains while relaxing in comfort under the dome windows in the dining room. I also got a kick out of the great incense occasionally blowing through the Tibetan prayer flags behind the Yoga shop a couple of buildings down to the rooftop deck. This is a town setting instead of wilderness, yet amazing hikes are minutes away. The Chief Ouray Mine and Alpine Mine Overlook trails offer satisfyingly strenuous journeys with jaw dropping scenery. I enjoyed returning to the penthouse by early afternoon to lounge with a beer, listening to the street crowd and contemplating where to eat for dinner. One block away is a market with groceries and a liquor store. Several restaurants are within a couple of blocks, but the full kitchen and rooftop deck grill are great options. My suggestion is to prepare your own breakfast. There are decent breakfast places, but the good ones are crowded which can make it stressful. Brewing your own coffee and munching pastries or chocolates purchased from shops across the street is a more peaceful way to start the day. Thanks to Curt and Nancy for sharing their project with visitors.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Oh my gosh - I don't know where to start. We've stayed at many VRBO's in many different states and this property definitely tops the cake! The penthouse suite is spacious, squeaky clean and has marvelous views from both decks and all the windows. It is truly elegant living away from home. Every detail has been thought of - from toiletries in the bathroom, spices in the kitchen, flashlights and even umbrellas for the occasional afternoon showers. The king size bed in the master is unbelievably comfortable. You definitely won't go wrong by selecting this property to stay at. We also toured the pharmacy museum downstairs. Curt has immense knowledge and it was presented with humor and wit. We can't wait to return - there is so much to see and do in the area. We golfed near Ridgway - it's a beautiful setting but the fairway needs some work. We hiked numerous trails nearby and drove to Telluride and took the free gondola up to do some hiking in that area. Hats off to Curt and Nancy for opening their very special property for renters to enjoy!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We couldn't have imagined a better place to stay than the Penthouse atop the Ouray Alchemist building! Located on Main Street, it is convenient to everything, yet the 3rd floor accomodation is private and boasts spectacular views from every window. It is spacious with excellent amenities including a very comfy king bed with premium linens (watched the shooting stars from this at night!), a washer/dryer and a gas grill on the back deck. Immaculately clean and tastefully decorated. Great nearby dining options, shopping, Jeep tours, hot springs and many miles of hiking (easy to challenging) literally right out the back door. We stayed for a week and only used the rental car once! Be sure to make time for the Penthouse owner's tour of the Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum located on the first floor of the building. Curt conducts a thorough and informative tour of his large, unusual collection of historical artifacts. Thanks again, Curt and Nancy, for sharing this lovely place with us. Now that we've experienced it, we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else in Ouray!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Terry and Andy, Thank you for taking the time to write this review and also for the lovely note you left us in the penthouse! We really enjoyed meeting you and having you two stay and we are thrilled that you had a good time in Ouray. It is an amazing place for a vacation. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the penthouse suite. It is my personal goal to always be the one that cleans it and takes care of it so when you return you will enjoy it like you had never left. We look forward to your return! Thanks again, Nancy & Curt

We've been summer vacationing all over Colorado for 10 years and have stayed at different rentals each year. The Ouray Alchemist penthouse is the best ever! Great views in all directions, within walking distance to everything (great restaurants of all types, grocery store, post office, jeep tours & rentals, hot springs, ouray perimeter trail (which noone knows about, but is really easy and cool!). Fully equipped, including many supplies that you may have forgotten to bring. Super comfortable King bed & pullout sofa bed, and a secure garage for your vehicle. Great value. Ability to climb 1 flight of stairs is required..Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Jo Ann and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your penthouse suite. It is truely "5 star". The suite has everything....and the views are spectacular....from the deck...360 degrees of mountain views unobstructed since the penthouse is above it all being on the third floor, The midtown location is great as everything is within walking distance. And Curtis' pharmacy collection on the first floor....a must see for anyone passing thru Ouray. Very interesting and impressive. Thank you Curtis for the tour. Only disappointment during our visit was that we didn't get a chance to meet Nancy. Maybe next time as we will be back.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Dale and Jo Ann, Thank you for your kind words. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at the penthouse suite here in Ouray. Thank you for taking the time to write your review. Ditto other reviews. Owners have a passion for perfection and good taste. Complimentary Ghirardelli Chocolate Raspberry Coffee with creme de Pirouline artisan chocolate wafers for example. Sadly, sans a valet to brew and serve.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Harley, Thank you for taking the time to write this review! Hope you had a pleasant trip returning home. Sorry there is no valet...I suppose I could do the "It Ain't Pretty" coffee service in the wee hours of the morning but then you would be stuck with me, my eyes half closed fitting the description - ha! We enjoyed meeting you and hope you will come back and stay again. Nancy :)

Every facet of this experience radiated perfection! It is evident that no expense was spared in creating this special space. These accommodations are located in a brand new building, Ouray Alchemist. Constructed with sensitivity to the town's historical atmosphere, the third-floor suite exudes all the luxury of a five-star hotel. Spectacular views compliment this beautifully-crafted condo perfectly. Don't miss the pharmacy museum! What a find! A rare collection reflecting the complete history of pharmaceuticals. Curt gives an amazing tour, having spent a lifetime planning this endeavor. The museum reflects this labor of love.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Mary, Thank you so much for taking time to write this review. We enjoyed having you stay at our penthouse. Most people come here in the summer but it was nice to know that you enjoyed being here in the winter. If I recall correctly you went skiing, snowshoeing and watched the ice climbers. Lots of fun stuff to do in the winter, too. Thanks again from Nancy and Curt

Our third time in Ouray and first time at this property. It is immaculately clean & well-maintained. The bedroom in back is quiet with fantastic views of the mountains. The living room with a view of Main Street lets you watch the happenings in town from your perch on the 3rd floor of this beautiful building. There is even a little balcony in front so you can people-watch outside while sipping coffee. We loved staying at this suite and will definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Susan and Bruce, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay here and look forward to your return. We hope you enjoyed your time in Moab as well on your way back home. Nancy and Curt

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Originally from the Midwest Curt and Nancy took different paths to Colorado before meeting in 2002 at Aspen Drug in Aspen CO. Pursuing his long-term dream of having a historic pharmacy collection exhibit led Curt to purchase fixtures to restore from Aspen Drug which was closing. Since all fixtures were for sale Nancy having worked there eleven years was thrown in the deal...well, not really, but it makes a good story. We share a common passion for the history of pharmacy so it made sense that we would get better acquainted as time went by, marrying in 2006.
Why the Owner Chose Ouray:
Ouray is called the Little Switzerland of America because of its unique dramatic alpine beauty. Surrounded by mountains it is the gem of the Rockies. We have never been to a more beautiful place. Curt was already living in Ouray when he met Nancy. There are outdoor activities here and nearby for every season. Skiing is close in Telluride and Silverton as well as Purgatory near Durango. Skiing is one of Nancy's passions. Ouray has inspired us to build this building and live out our dream. On the first floor is our commercial business that we call the Ouray Alchemist. Designed after an 1890's pharmacy with hickory hardwood floors and a tin ceiling we feature antiques, jewelry and candy. The historic pharmacy collection is completed for viewing and receiving rave reviews. With time there will be other fun things to come, like an old-fashioned soda fountain.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
This clean comfortable and cozy suite in the heart of town is furnished with modern amenities intermingled with beautiful antiques and art. Make yourself at home. There is not a better view of the mountains anywhere else. Despite being right in the thick of things the large curved windows with the adjustable up or down shades, the large deck and separate balcony give optimum privacy. Snuggle up and sleep with a view of the moon coming up over the Amphitheatre.
