Designed by award-winning modernist architect Barton Myers as a warehouse for living, this stunning 4,200 square foot residence, built largely of glass, steel and exposed concrete, sits on a lofty and totally private 10-acre site overlooking the Channel Islands, lemon orchards and farmland in Montecito, California.
Indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly throughout the house, accented by well-placed courtyards and terraces offering different views and uses. Three huge roll-up doors open up the house to a large terrace and the full panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Mature eucalyptus, orange, lemon and avocado trees sit right outside the house, creating a peaceful setting for outdoor dining. The cool, crisp lines of the modern kitchen echo the striking industrial design of the massive steel roll-up doors. The house was designed for simple and gracious family living in the best tradition of California’s indoor/outdoor modernist homes.
The historic 1930s garden, designed by landscape architect Lockwood de Forest, and updated by Derrik Eichelberger, includes ancient olive trees surrounding a large oval lawn that overlooks the Channel Islands. Picturesque olive and pepper trees line the driveway leading up to the house. Five acres have been set aside as natural coastal sage habitat. Trails meander throughout the property.
No other design could have done justice to the massive views, private setting and pedigree of this unusual site. The property was previously the site of “The Monastery,” a rambling vernacular house built in 1935 by famed conductor Leopold Stokowski. Residents over the years have included Greta Garbo, Beryl Markham, and Gloria Vanderbilt. Two of the original fireplaces, designed by Stokowski, were rebuilt as garden features. One, in the shape of the Hollywood Bowl shell, forms a fire pit facing both the house and the historical gardens, and serves as an outside lounge area. The second fireplace, in the form of a pipe organ, frames the kitchen’s outdoor patio and provides warmth for outdoor dining.
Residents will be offered referrals for complete cooking, cleaning, and nanny services. Montecito restaurants, shopping and beaches are ten minutes away.

The house and location are lovely. However, if you are renting on a weekday, be prepared to be awakened at 645 am by garbagemen, dressed in black, noisily entering property and rolling out garbage cans. also, who knows what other workers will show up to loiter around the property you have paid for and ring incessantly to be let in the gate....we had 3 tree trimmers on the property....so be warned, it won't be private during the week, AT ALL....and when you call or write to complain, basically, you get 'sorry' despite having paid for the right to use the property.Recommended for: Girls getaway.

Well everyone was telling us there was no summer in Santa Barbara. It was the first week in October and were they ever proved wrong. We had a most delightful stay at the Monastery in Toro Canyon. We grew up in Montecito so it was like old home week walking up the Canyon and down the road into town. We were so appreciative of the Lockwood de Forrest gardens on site that we took in a visit to the Lotus Land Gardens. We loved the sunsets, the perfect kitchen and the immeasurable beauty that surrounds this home. Thank you for making my Birthday so memorable.Did you find this review helpful? My family of four had the most amazing stay at The Monastery. From the early morning sunrise with fresh orange juice right off the trees to the breathtaking sunset with a glass of wine on the patio. Our two children had a blast as well. Exceptionally clean, excellent service from the property manager (great chef too), private, relaxing, and what a view! Everything is thought of for a wonderful stay. Will go back.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, age 55+.

Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend experience at the beautiful Monastery property. After a grueling tax season, this was exactly what the doctor ordered. The views, gorgeous architecture, and rich history behind the Monastery truly make this place one of a kind. The pictures on the website honestly do not capture how nice this place is. I just want to also say how appreciative I am of the friendly, helpful service you provided. We found everything we needed at the place- thank you so much for setting it up.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

A little slice of heaven..so peaceful, inviting, and the perfect place to entertain, even, while on vacation. The kitchen is every chef's dream..equipped with all that you need to enjoy yourself and entertain others. Once you get to The Monestary it is hard to leave because it brings the "outside in".Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

Your house was set up perfect. We had everything we needed. We were taken good care of. The best was waking up early and watching the sun rise with a nice cup of coffee while sitting by the fire. Thank you again for letting us stay at your place. It is truly magical.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
