Christmas in the Blue Ridge mountains
Christmas in the Blue Ridge mountains
This house was a lovely place to spend Christmas, but I imagine it would be very nice during the rest of the year too. The listing description was perfectly accurate and the house was impeccably clean and well maintained. The gas fireplace is easy to use and makes the living room very cosy. Our (teenage) kids also very much appreciated the hot tub after a long walk in the snow. I would recommend it to anyone who likes hiking -- there are countless possibilities right out the back door. We were in the area to visit family, so we did not do much sightseeing, but we did visit Boone, a nice town at the end of a scenic drive along Rtes 88/421. There also is a great pizza place in the nearby town of Lansing. All in all, we were very satisfied with our stay!

Beautiful home in the Mountains
Beautiful home in the Mountains
We stayed at this house 2 summers ago for a little over 2 weeks on a break from work in West Africa. It was the perfect place to feel like we were at home and to enjoy the beauty of the mountains. The hiking was excellent, the view of the porch great, and the home exceedingly well-outfitted and comfortable. We have recommended it to friends and family.

Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: I am a real estate broker specializing in investment sales and investor coaching. My wife owns and operates a home cleaning business. We reside in Raleigh NC. Our favorite pastime is hiking and playing on our mountain with our two dogs Sarah and Dakota. Both of our girls, which are SPCA rescues, love this place as much as we do. The creeks, ponds, trails and meadows keep everyone busy and active. According to my wife, there are few things better than having two tired dogs at the end of the day and this sure does the trick. We also love the shops, galleries and restaurants in West Jefferson which is just a few minutes away. Just about anything you could ask for is available in town. One of our favorite events is the “Christmas in July Festival” held every 4th of July in West Jefferson. It is like a mountain fair and craft show all in one. We always find things to do whether at home on the mountain or in the bustling little town of West Jefferson.
Why the Owner Chose West Jefferson:
My wife and I spent our first weekend together in a cabin just up the hill from this home. We then decided to build a place of our own and so in 1995 we built Spirit Song. In September of 1997 we were married on this property with the distant mountains as a backdrop. We love hiking these mountains to take in the amazing flora and fauna provided by Mother Nature. Beautiful streams, rare and unusual plants and flowers and abundant wildlife are all part of the daily experience. On our recent (spring) visit we saw various Trillium, Dutchman's breeches, Trout Lilies, Morel Mushrooms (currently selling for $20 per once in stores) and all within 100 yards of the back door so there is plenty to explore in every direction. It is not uncommon to see wild turkey, deer, ground hogs and even the occasional black bear. We are nature lovers and this is a natural paradise.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peace and quiet is one of the first things you will notice. City and car noises are far below. The temperature is always about 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the low lands. Our mountain home is almost always 15 degrees cooler than Raleigh. This place is in virtual seclusion but just minutes from any sort of food or shopping. One last thing, star gazing here is fantastic due to the lack of city lights. You can see many things normally invisible to the city viewer. There are out door seats, cushions and blankets for just this purpose. The home faces the North Star.
