An awesome get away!
An awesome get away!
My family and my sister's family just returned from an amazing trip to Surf City! The house was as described, came with a well stocked kitchen (dishes, pots and pans etc.), had plenty of room for all 11 of us and the balaconies that faced the ocean, allowed us to spend quite a bit of time watching the waves in the distance. Starfish Realty was great to work with and even at the last minute we were able to get the linens we needed for the week. We were about the equiv. of 1 1/2 blocks from one of the beach accesses and the cart was a great thing to have to take all of our beach items in and leave at the bottom of the stairs to beach. We were lucky to have the best weather and awesome waves. Surprisingly, even with beach houses close by, the area was very quiet and the locals were very friendly! One thing that we weren't aware of when coming onto the island, is the drawbridge goes up on the hour, every hour for one of the pirate cruises in the afternoon into evening which caused quite a traffic jam. My first thought was that traffic would that bad all the time, but we were relieved to find out that it was just on those occasions. The pier is something to check out if you want to try fishing but the fish usually are better caught in the evening and it will cost about $20/person to fish using one of their poles, along with a $30/pole deposit plus the bait. You have to pay $1/person if you just want to be a spectator. We rented 3 poles and everyone who wanted to try, got a chance. We saw jellyfish swimming near the pier but the evening we went, there weren't too many fish being caught. There are plenty of places to get fresh seafood to cook yourself and plenty of restaurants in the area. There plenty of surf shops and places to rent bikes and kayaks. Wilmington and Jacksonville are about 45 minutes away if you want to watch a movie or go to a mall. If you go through Virginia, be aware that there will be major delays at the 77/81 area near Wytheville (especially coming home) and just north of Wytheville, before the tunnel at the National Forest. The 10 1/2 hour ride home took 13 driving hours. All in all, we would definitely return to Captain Hooks and Surf City/Topsail. Thank you for allowing us to borrow your beautiful home!
