Hi Ali, We just got back to Portland and already wish we were back in Hawaii at your lovely ohana. Thank you for everything! We have been coming to Hawaii for 15 years and this was one of our favorite visits. Thank you for making us feel so at home. We have stayed in many hotels in the various resorts but thought we would try a different experience this time. We were not disappointed. Instead of being part of the tourist crowd at the hotel, we felt a bit special this time. I loved getting up and going for long walks in your neighborhood. Some of the friendliest people around. The views walking through the neighborhood were breathtaking. sunrises over Mauna Kea and sunsets with Maui in the distance, just beautiful. The store and new coffee shop in the village were just perfect. Great selection at grocery store and one of the cleanest in Hawaii. Your garden was our sanctuary. After spending the day exploring it was such a treat to come home and grill out on our own private patio. Everything was perfect. Mornings were spent sipping coffee on the patio and watching the beautiful birds at the feeder. If you are looking for affordable, luxury, look no further. Thanks for your wonderful hospitality Ali! We will certainly be back and will pass the word onto our friends! Aloha! Bob

Owner response: Thanks! I love the garden and the birds. Lava Java at the shopping center is a great addition and a stroll over there for a coffee and to get the Sunday paper is a must. Just at the end of the cul-de-sac you get a great sunset ocean view, so evening walks are great too.

Hi Ali, Just wanted to thank you for letting me stay at your place. We loved everything. Your unit was very clean, comfortable and charming. We had everything we needed for our stay. So awesome to have our own patio and grill. We felt like we really belonged in Hawaii. In fact we loved it so much we want to come back and buy property. Thank you so much for your help with available properties in the village and pointing us to the best deals on the Kohala Coast. We hope to be back in a month to buy something. I would highly recommend this property for anyone looking for a great deal in a really peaceful and convenient location. Your garden is just beautiful!! Mike and julie from Denver

If you like dogs, this is the place for you!! They bark and howl from time to time like a serenade. Ran out of propane while cooking on the propane grill for the third time during the stay. Propane replaced with the least empty of the empties availlable and was able to get through the meal after everything cooled off and the fire was restarted. Coffee maker quits after 10 days, and reported to the owner who stated she would replace that day. Day passed, no replacement, next day, no replacement. Upon inquiry the owner states "that's odd" it worked before you moved in and it was brand new. Brand new or not, it quit. If you want or need fresh linen, better give much advance notice, On Fri of the first week, inquired and told leave near gate, housekeeper will replace. On second Friday I left near gate and informed owner laundry ready for exchange, who states "Need more notice," today (good friday is a holiday and no service by housekeeper until Monday. I would have been nice had the owner given me notice, considering I had seen her face to face ( after much prodding over the coffee maker). Now linen has been rained upon and I will not put it back on the bed, It seems I am here to serve the owner, instead of the owner attempting to make the stay enjoyable with the bare essentials of good housekeeping and hygene. If you need a place to stay for more than a day or two you would be well advised to look elsewhere. I must admit, the housekeeper did appear to unlock the door on the occassion I locked the keys in the unit. However, the housekeeper was on the way here anyway. Overall atmosphere and attitude demonstrated less than the aloha spirit. If you stay here be prepared to rough it, big time.

Owner response: Thank you for your review. The ohana is an economical spot for short stays. A parking lot facing hotel room is app. $200/n. Our lovely suite with private lanai, garden, mini kitchen, BBQ & off street parking is $64/n; way nicer at 1/3 the price. We recommend it for short stays for energettic guests who like exploring & want a private, place to relax. As retirees, buying a modest home in a lower income housing area locally, booking an extended stay at the lowest rate available was perhaps not the ideal choice. The closest alternative would be a single room in one of the least desireable complexes in Kona, where you would have a bed & bath and lots of traffic & bar noise. We pride ourselves on our accomodation and service. When you locked your keys inside the unit we scrambled to assist you within 20 minutes. When the propane on the BBQ ran out, after hours, it was replaced in 5 minutes. When the brand new coffee maker stopped working it was replaced in one day. (It worked fine after clearing a blockage.) We offer laundry service for stays over 1 week; almost no such rentals do. Sadly, we aren't mind readers & do need a little notice. E-mailing on a national holiday weekend, with no notice, that you require laundry service is not a request anyone can accomodate. Launderettes are availble for urgent services. Luckily for you the entire property was vacant for the bulk of your stay and you had the quiet of the whole property to yourself. This is a community, not a resort, which is what our guests love about it; they love staying in authentic Hawaii. Homeowners have pets. Waikoloa has CC&Rs re barking dogs which are enforced. This unit is one of very few that allows pets; another reason why guests love it. We regret you found our service lacking. The level of service you expect requires staying in a resort setting at the $185/n range. At $64/n this unit is what it is; a comfortable place to base yourself for a brief stay. Best wishes for a successful close on your Paniolo Estates home purchase; an area with no CC&Rs and renowned for its Hawaiian pig hunting dog breeders - primarily pit bulls. We are glad to hear you love dogs as you will enjoy many of these specialty dogs in your new neighborhood. Warmest aloha, ali

We stayed at this property in January 2012. Very cool spot. Makes you feel like a local instead of a tourist. Beautifully decorated, with your own bbq grill, beach chairs, cooler, teal steamers, boogie boards, private lanai. It was perfect for us. Waikoloa is in the middle of everything on Big Island. Just minutes to the best beaches or hiking in the mountains. Great grocery store walking distance from this unit and Lava Java coffee shop is also in the village. This property was the perfect spot for exploring all the diversity this amazing island has to offer. We have been to all the Hawaiian Islands and Big Island is our favorite by far. The friendliest people, cleanest beaches, best diving, golfing, hiking and miles of open country. So less crowed than Kauai, Maui or Oahu. It feels like the authenticity of Hawaii is still alive and well on Big Island. We will be back. Thank you Ali for provided the perfect spot for our vacation. The birds, flowers, trees & quiet of your garden was just what the Dr. ordered.

We stayed 4 days at this place and really enjoyed it. The place has everything, even buggy board and umbrella. You can cook by yourself outside, at the backyard. And the backyard is beautiful-with papaya, coconut tree...It is 15min away from Hapuna Beach-the best beach in Big Island. After this property we moved to the resort in Kona, it costed 2 times more and it was sooo bad...I wish we could stay at this private place for whole vacation. LOVE IT!

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. It is true, you can stay in a less than nice hotel room for 3 times the price and you don't get your own lanai and garden with mini kitchen and BBQ, fresh tropical fruits, herbs and vegetables. We love our Garden Sanctuary, and so does everyone else. For the price it is an unbelievably good deal. Aloha, ali

This was a great, economical way for me to stay in Waikoloa Village while I was here on business. An excellent alternative to a hotel. I loved the garden and the setting. Amazing in such a central location. Mahalo.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: Ali Blackmore is a Zimbabwean who has traveled the globe, living in eight different countries over four continents. Dual careers in real estate and design have traveled with her and continue on Big Island, Hawaii where she works as a real estate Broker & designer specializing in Kohala Coast property. A lifelong real estate investor, Ali knows a good property when she sees one and bought Laughing Gecko Garden Sanctuary because it is one of the all-round best lots and locations in the Village. If you are visiting Big Island to look at or buy property Ali would be delighted to assist you with your search and purchase.

Why the Owner Chose Waikoloa Village:
As a Hawaii resident living and working on the Big Island I wanted to find an elegant and private home in a convenient central location. This property fits the bill. Waikoloa Village is a good central location with easy access to the resorts and beaches, Waimea, Kona and Hilo. The property location within the Village is superb. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac with attractive neighboring homes, the property is within easy walking distance of all shops, services, golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts and grocery store. Because the home sits on a double lot the property has large beautiful gardens and generous separation of space from neighbors. I love to garden and enjoy growing my own organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
As this ohana is located on the property of a private home with large gardens the setting is private, peaceful and 'far from the maddening crowd' yet convenient to everything you need. The price is unbeatable. It truly is exceptional luxury at a most affordable price. The ohana would best suit a single person or couple looking for a quiet getaway to retreat to after enjoying the best of recreation and dining the Kohala Coast and upcountry Waimea has to offer.
