Absolutely perfect - everything you need. This suite is located in a nice cul de sac just minutes from the golf course and the local shopping. A great place to be based from while exploring the big island.

                            Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers.

Owner response: Thank you. Yes, this is a sweet spot. It's close to everything without any of the hubbub of being close, because it's tucked away on a cul-de-sac off a side street. You can walk to the store and pick up a Sunday paper, coffee and pastry and walk back to quiet privacy. I'm so glad you liked it. Because of how Waikoloa Village is set up, with the shopping center and golf course right at the entry, there are not many ohana rentals within walking distance of those amenities. We are fortunate to be so close, but feel so far.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights while on a one month vacation on the Big Island. We found this property perfect for our needs and we enjoyed the location. The bed was comfy and we enjoyed the patio area for our breakfasts. The kitchen-like area is outside and includes a small refrigerator and microwave and a limited amount of dishware. It's not a full kitchen so if you have plans to have a lot of your meals made at home, I'd suggest you book other Laughing Gecko properties. We also stayed at one of their one bedrooms which had a wonderfully equipped kitchen and highly recommend that unit also. Good internet. We thought this studio was a great value and we highly recommend it.

Owner response: aloha linda, and thank you for your kind words. this ohana is a super option for stays like yours where you are needing a place for a few days and want to explore and will be eating out and about a lot. great to fix continental breakfasts, or grill and salad (light meals) but no full kitchen or laundry. you can't beat the amenities for he price. kind regards, ali

The only positive things I can say about this "private ohana" was that the rate was cheap and the place was clean when my husband and I arrived (hense, the 2 "stars" given). The negatives...LOTS! This place is far from feeling private, so if you're looking for a romantic atmosphere or even just a quiet atmosphere, this is definitely NOT the place. It felt like we were on a bad camping trip. The neighbors directly behind our room were usually up at 5:30am every morning, banging around their side of the house (probably getting ready for work), and what sounded like their ten dogs on the other side of our wall howling for no reason every 20 minutes was just the icing on the cake. Yeah, it was sure "relaxing." To top it off, there is NO air conditioning and the one ceiling fan in the bedroom only has one speed level: SLOW! We had to keep the door open the entire 5 nights we were there with the screen door shut to get some relief from the heat, but the curtains they had for the door and window were completely see-through, which made things even less private! Seriously? The owner can't afford to replace a cheap ceiling fan or curtains that would add so much more comfort for an already uncomfortable space? Finally, the Wifi went out on us during Day 2 of our five night stay so my husband and I just had to use the 4G service on our phones instead of our laptop. I guess you get what you pay for, but honestly, the rate should be way cheaper for what it ended up being. This place is only good for a couple of nights stay at the MOST (and even then you may not get that great of sleep). Otherwise, invest a little more money in a better property.

                            Recommended for: Adventure seekers.

Owner response: Why not speak up on arrival, so we can improve your stay, instead of complaining after leaving? I appreciate your comments but in all fairness: Price - it's cheap. $64 here vs $250 for a discounted hotel room. Privacy - it's very private, surrounded by rock walls, lockable gate, solid bamboo fence, thick hedging & trees. Screens on the lanai & drapes in the bedroom, although neither are needed as it's impossible to see in. You can't get more private. Like a bad camping trip? - queen bed, memory foam topper, high thread count linens, down pillows, en-suite bath with tub, shower & toiletries, outdoor kitchen with gas grill, shaded lanai with reclining teak loungers, walk in closet, paved off street parking... The neighbors - me. I'd just returned from a trip to your hometown LA. I can see where you get your fear of sleeping with the door open. I'm quiet and so are my 2 (not 10) dogs. My Saluki does "howl" a 2 second greeting when I return, which isn't every 20 minutes. It's a guest room in a residential home. There are children and animals and cars and people in residential areas. AC - We don't have AC. Almost no-one does in Waikoloa. We have fans as stated on VRBO. We sleep with our doors open so we can enjoy Trade winds and fresh cool evening breezes coming down off Mauna Kea and be lulled by the gentle rustle of those breezes through the palms outside our doors. We have screens on our doors so we can keep them open at night. That's the whole point. We recommend this as a PLUS. It's not LA; it's Hawaii. WiFi - I was there. I work from home and my work is internet based. The WiFi was running the entire time. Usually internet access problems aren't an issue with signal (we have high speed via Oceanic Time Warner), but rather connecting to it; often a setting on the guest's computer. Had I known you had a problem I could have fixed it for you. A couple nights stay - yes, that's what we recommend when we get queries for longer periods. We don't take longer bookings. You get what you pay for - in this case you get more; much more. It's true this isn't 5 star, and we don't represent it to be. It's a comfortable, affordable option that's better than it's peers in it's price point. It's harsh to post a poor review complaining that a $64/n room is a $64/n room and not a $250/n resort. Or were you just joking? It is what it is and most people love it. aloha, ali

Hi Ali, We just got back to Portland and already wish we were back in Hawaii at your lovely ohana. Thank you for everything! We have been coming to Hawaii for 15 years and this was one of our favorite visits. Thank you for making us feel so at home. We have stayed in many hotels in the various resorts but thought we would try a different experience this time. We were not disappointed. Instead of being part of the tourist crowd at the hotel, we felt a bit special this time. I loved getting up and going for long walks in your neighborhood. Some of the friendliest people around. The views walking through the neighborhood were breathtaking. sunrises over Mauna Kea and sunsets with Maui in the distance, just beautiful. The store and new coffee shop in the village were just perfect. Great selection at grocery store and one of the cleanest in Hawaii. Your garden was our sanctuary. After spending the day exploring it was such a treat to come home and grill out on our own private patio. Everything was perfect. Mornings were spent sipping coffee on the patio and watching the beautiful birds at the feeder. If you are looking for affordable, luxury, look no further. Thanks for your wonderful hospitality Ali! We will certainly be back and will pass the word onto our friends! Aloha! Bob

Owner response: Thanks! I love the garden and the birds. Lava Java at the shopping center is a great addition and a stroll over there for a coffee and to get the Sunday paper is a must. Just at the end of the cul-de-sac you get a great sunset ocean view, so evening walks are great too.

If you like dogs, this is the place for you!! They bark and howl from time to time like a serenade. Ran out of propane while cooking on the propane grill for the third time during the stay. Propane replaced with the least empty of the empties availlable and was able to get through the meal after everything cooled off and the fire was restarted. Coffee maker quits after 10 days, and reported to the owner who stated she would replace that day. Day passed, no replacement, next day, no replacement. Upon inquiry the owner states "that's odd" it worked before you moved in and it was brand new. Brand new or not, it quit. If you want or need fresh linen, better give much advance notice, On Fri of the first week, inquired and told leave near gate, housekeeper will replace. On second Friday I left near gate and informed owner laundry ready for exchange, who states "Need more notice," today (good friday is a holiday and no service by housekeeper until Monday. I would have been nice had the owner given me notice, considering I had seen her face to face ( after much prodding over the coffee maker). Now linen has been rained upon and I will not put it back on the bed, It seems I am here to serve the owner, instead of the owner attempting to make the stay enjoyable with the bare essentials of good housekeeping and hygene. If you need a place to stay for more than a day or two you would be well advised to look elsewhere. I must admit, the housekeeper did appear to unlock the door on the occassion I locked the keys in the unit. However, the housekeeper was on the way here anyway. Overall atmosphere and attitude demonstrated less than the aloha spirit. If you stay here be prepared to rough it, big time.

Owner response: Thank you for your review. The ohana is an economical spot for short stays. A parking lot facing hotel room is app. $200/n. Our lovely suite with private lanai, garden, mini kitchen, BBQ & off street parking is $64/n; way nicer at 1/3 the price. We recommend it for short stays for energettic guests who like exploring & want a private, place to relax. As retirees, buying a modest home in a lower income housing area locally, booking an extended stay at the lowest rate available was perhaps not the ideal choice. The closest alternative would be a single room in one of the least desireable complexes in Kona, where you would have a bed & bath and lots of traffic & bar noise. We pride ourselves on our accomodation and service. When you locked your keys inside the unit we scrambled to assist you within 20 minutes. When the propane on the BBQ ran out, after hours, it was replaced in 5 minutes. When the brand new coffee maker stopped working it was replaced in one day. (It worked fine after clearing a blockage.) We offer laundry service for stays over 1 week; almost no such rentals do. Sadly, we aren't mind readers & do need a little notice. E-mailing on a national holiday weekend, with no notice, that you require laundry service is not a request anyone can accomodate. Launderettes are availble for urgent services. Luckily for you the entire property was vacant for the bulk of your stay and you had the quiet of the whole property to yourself. This is a community, not a resort, which is what our guests love about it; they love staying in authentic Hawaii. Homeowners have pets. Waikoloa has CC&Rs re barking dogs which are enforced. This unit is one of very few that allows pets; another reason why guests love it. We regret you found our service lacking. The level of service you expect requires staying in a resort setting at the $185/n range. At $64/n this unit is what it is; a comfortable place to base yourself for a brief stay. Best wishes for a successful close on your Paniolo Estates home purchase; an area with no CC&Rs and renowned for its Hawaiian pig hunting dog breeders - primarily pit bulls. We are glad to hear you love dogs as you will enjoy many of these specialty dogs in your new neighborhood. Warmest aloha, ali

We stayed at this property in January 2012. Very cool spot. Makes you feel like a local instead of a tourist. Beautifully decorated, with your own bbq grill, beach chairs, cooler, teal steamers, boogie boards, private lanai. It was perfect for us. Waikoloa is in the middle of everything on Big Island. Just minutes to the best beaches or hiking in the mountains. Great grocery store walking distance from this unit and Lava Java coffee shop is also in the village. This property was the perfect spot for exploring all the diversity this amazing island has to offer. We have been to all the Hawaiian Islands and Big Island is our favorite by far. The friendliest people, cleanest beaches, best diving, golfing, hiking and miles of open country. So less crowed than Kauai, Maui or Oahu. It feels like the authenticity of Hawaii is still alive and well on Big Island. We will be back. Thank you Ali for provided the perfect spot for our vacation. The birds, flowers, trees & quiet of your garden was just what the Dr. ordered.

                          Owner info

                          Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: Ali Blackmore is a Zimbabwean who has traveled the globe, living in eight different countries over four continents. Dual careers in real estate and design have traveled with her and continue on Big Island, Hawaii where she works as a real estate Broker & designer specializing in Kohala Coast property. A lifelong real estate investor, Ali knows a good property when she sees one and bought Laughing Gecko Garden Sanctuary because it is one of the all-round best lots and locations in the Village. If you are visiting Big Island to look at or buy property Ali would be delighted to assist you with your search and purchase.

Why the Owner Chose Waikoloa Village:
As a Hawaii resident living and working on the Big Island I wanted to find an elegant and private home in a convenient central location. This property fits the bill. Waikoloa Village is a good central location with easy access to the resorts and beaches, Waimea, Kona and Hilo. The property location within the Village is superb. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac with attractive neighboring homes, the property is within easy walking distance of all shops, services, golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts and grocery store. Because the home sits on a double lot the property has large beautiful gardens and generous separation of space from neighbors. I love to garden and enjoy growing my own organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
As this ohana is located on the property of a private home with large gardens the setting is private, peaceful and 'far from the maddening crowd' yet convenient to everything you need. The price is unbeatable. It truly is exceptional luxury at a most affordable price. The ohana would best suit a single person or couple looking for a quiet getaway to retreat to after enjoying the best of recreation and dining the Kohala Coast and upcountry Waimea has to offer.
