Orleans house description
Nice house on 1.5 acres overlooking the Klamath River and the town of Orleans. Nothing between the house and the river. One neighbor on the same driveway (Wesley Lane) but about five acres owned by the family gives visitors privacy, yet convenience. The house was built in 1964 with the best materials and features. The large lawn area is ideal for small weddings or celebrations. There are fruit trees on the property and guests are welcome to harvest in-season fruit.
The house is within minutes of the Salmon River and great swimming, rafting and kayaking. It's about an hour on mostly paved roads to trailheads in the Marble Mt. and Trinity Alps wilderness areas.
Other pictures are available by contacting the owner.

Perfect little get away
Perfect little get away
This was a wonderful place to enjoy family fun. The house is very large and accommodated to my family extremely well, I was surprised how well stocked everything was for their guests. The pool was perfect to take off the heat, it was 100+ degrees while we stayed there, so the most of our time spent was in the pool or In the salmon river that's about 15 min driving distance from this home(klamouth is too swift to swim in with small children) we will definitely be back next year, and I have spread the word to a bunch of my friends who will be looking this home up for future stays as well. I only live about 90 min away from this destination, but the no cell service, and zero Internet, on a little piece of paradise was just what the Doctor ordered

Great fun and relaxation
Great fun and relaxation
My family and I had a fantastic time relaxing in the pool. We hunted for bigfoot, didn't see him but, saw a black bear down at the river. The house was comfortable and the views were beautiful. Leslie's family was great and helped my inlaws when they had car trouble. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all, this is it.

Owner response: I'll let you know if they find Bigfoot. I hear there's a new group looking for him/her this week.
Simple, Remote, and Quiet
Simple, Remote, and Quiet
Given the extreme remoteness of the area, this was just what we were looking for in a place to stay. We are amateur gold miners and we really could not have found a better "base camp" for our vacation in the price range. When we arrived it was very clean and had all the amenities promised in the listing. Working with the owner was a very pleasant experience. She went out of her way to answer all our questions about the area, and even provided some extra things around the house that we would need during our trip. There were even flowers set out for us and a nice bottle of wine to welcome us "home". Like I said, she was amazing. The were only two down sides to our stay. One was that, since we are from the midwest we take for granted screens on windows, so when we arrived we were both disappointed to find not a single screen on any of the windows. We spent the week living with spiders, mosquitos, and other creep crawlies. Which in general would not be so bad for an average person I guess, but I am severely allergic to all kinds of bites and stings, so I sort of suffered and had to wear Off for the week, live on Benadryl, and sleep with the windows closed in a house without A/C. That part was not so pleasant. We tried to contact the owner while there, however there was a mix-up in communication on their end and we didn't hear back from them until we were flying home. So due to lack of cell service in the area it did make it hard to ensure that issues were resolved, as it was we made due with the lack of screens and hoped the cats, squirrels, mice, and foxes wouldn't jump in through the windows along with the bugs. Indeed one cat did get into the house in the middle of the night, he actually scared us to death as he jumped right from the window onto the bed we were sleeping in below!! Funny after the fact! The second is that while the river is "on the property" and from the photos it seems that it would be easy to access, it was not quite what we were hoping. You CAN reach the river from the yard by walking down a small, winding, brushy trail for about 15-20 mins. It was easy to get lost going out and coming back to the house and that added to the disappointment. Once there, the river is beautiful and there are some great places to lay out on giant rocks and watch the rapids run nearby. Very picturesque and I'm imagining great for fishing! Other than that, the house is what is appears. Simple, remote, and quiet. Something we very much appreciated. :)

Owner response: It was fun to host a young couple from the Mid-west to their first trip to California. We remind people they are not coming to LA ... (one of Shanna's first questions was, "is there a Walmart in Orleans?") Nothing close ... there's a tiny grocery store. Closest Walmart is 85 miles away. Disneyland is 800 miles away and even San Francisco is a seven-hour drive. Shanna and Chris aparrently depended on the internet for accurate information about roads ... they came down from Medford on the Salmon River Rd. It's accurate but usually not advisable if you're not used to one-lane roads with 200 ft. drop offs with no guard rails to a beautiful river. Highway 96 can be an adventure for those who may be used to freeways and flat, straight roads. Highway 96 is our recommended route. The internet is not dependable when it comes to dealing with places that don't have internet service. We still have friends and relatives in Orleans who barely have phone service! Bugs ... poison oak and wild animals. The house is better than camping but in some respects, it's camping with all the comforts of home. We do have screens for the windows but don't like the looks of them so they were taken off many years ago and are stored in the pool house. We will install a few so those who are uncomfortable with unscreened windows will have some comfort. We try to stress how remote this property is ... but to us ... it's civilization in the wilderness ... we have paved roads within a few hundred feet of the house. What more could you want? Thanks Shanna and Chris for your comments ... we will make some changes as a result. Hope to see you again, soon -- Leslie and Paul.

We all had a great time. the boys loved the pool and picking beries. My husand and I loved the view -- it is breath taking. Your house is nice and opend and we felt right at home. After sleeping in motels the past five nights, your home was a breath of fresh air and your hospitality as well..

Thanks again for allowing us to use your wonderful house. The fishing was great as was getting away from the grid in Sacto. See you again next year.

Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: I've travelled all over the world and there's no place I'd rather be than at the property in Orleans. We purchased the property with my parents in 2000 from the 90+ year old woman who lives next door. The Gault family owned about 10 (or more) acres which included an airport when I was a kid. They subdivided it in the late 90s and we were fortunate enough to buy about seven acres and the house. My parents recently moved to Oregon so we've been using it as a vacation rental and a second home for us. I love sitting in the living room in the winter watching the fog slide in over the river. In the summer, the pool is a treat if you don't want to go to the rivers to swim. We may have internet access in 2013 but I'll tell you, it's nice not to have cell phone or internet access at times. There is a regular phone if you need to stay in touch. It is the perfect place to get away from it all. There's internet access in Orleans.
Why the Owner Chose Orleans:
We bought this property with my dad and stepmom with the intention of retiring here some day. My husband grew up in Orleans and I've always wanted to be a full-time resident. My stepmom's family homesteaded there in the early 1900s and the ranch is still in the family. My dad moved there in 1968 when he was working for PG&E and they were building the power lines to Somes Bar. There is something magical about the place and everyone who goes there agrees. Many of my siblings live within a mile and are willing to help make your trip enjoyable. There's also a lot of Native American history to appreciate in the area. A lot of our family members are of Yurok and Karuk decent and participate in ceremonies and celebrations nearby. The Old Timers parade and picnic is very similar to something I participated in a village in France in 2010. Father's Day weekend involves a parade that has to get Board of Supervisors and CalTrans permission to close the state highway. Everyone comes out to enjoy the parade that goes through town, then turns around and goes through town again. In the spring, there is a bird watching festival and there is always rafting and kayaking. Fishermen have been renting the place in October and November for years ... we've been booked solid but give us a try just in case.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We've had weddings and family events with dozens of people and it's also ideal for a couple or someone just wanting to get away from it all. The nearest commercial airport is in McKinleyville about 80 miles away ... the Arcata/Eureka airport. Redding and I-5 are about 150 miles away on the scenic Highways 299 and 96. Highway 96 has become a favorite for motorcycle enthusiasts in recent years. What I love about Orleans and the property ... there's nothing to do if that's what you choose. You don't feel like you're missing out on anything, yet if you want, you can hike, bike, kayak, fish, etc. You can also sit on the river bar and read a book for hours and likely won't see another person. You might see a bear or an eagle but they probably won't see you.
