We call where we live Moe'uhane Hale or Dream House and when you see it you will know why. This two story modern house sits on a lava flow from 1955. Our family resides on the top story where we have a lanai that looks out into the distance to the sea and our guests are given the sanctity of the bottom floor. We have two terrific rooms. One is called 'Maluhia' which means Peace and the other room is known as 'Moena' or Resting Place for we hope that when you come to Moe'uhane Hale you will find tranquility as we have.
The guest floor has two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed, one bathroom, its own private entrance, patio, and living/dining area with private kitchenette.

"If we could give Juan 10 stars it wouldn't be enough....." Firstly, the photo of the home doesn't begin to do justice to this lovely lovely B&B. Decorated with a fine eye and skilled hand, Juan and Larry have created a true retreat in the lava fields....luckily they are far enough away from Kalapana that it is not threatened by the recurrent flows. Driving into this residential neighborhood, we were curious as to what we would find- perhaps one of those spare rooms decked out with the leftovers of granny's house? NOT!!! A private entrance leads into a small guest dining room and lounge. A few books, great art and full on hospitality are just steps away from quiet and private rooms. Great mattresses, quiet colors in the linens tried to lure me to bed. However the firery volcano had to be visited first. There is a great little resturant (walk-up order window, fine fine ahi) not 5 min away for dinner and then the trek out to see Pele. (That is another story!). Getting back at 11 pm, sinking into that comfy bed was just heaven. In the morning Juan makes a full breakfast with fresh juice and homemade whatever you like- the french toast is highly reccommended. This place, and the people who call it home are not to be missed. Our mistake- not staying longer!!! This district is a hidden gem and next year we'll not make the same mistake twice.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/5

This is a beautiful, immaculate home. It was spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished and quiet. I felt very comfortable and relaxed here. I only wish I could have stayed longer! I really enjoyed my breakfast as well as the star filled sky at night. I give this place 5 stars.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway.

I had a wonderful stay at the Kehena Beach Guesthouse! Completely agree with the reviews posted in March and April of 2009; the place is even better than described by those guests. One of the cleanest homes I've ever had the pleasure of visiting; the breakfasts were delicious and filling. Located about 1/2 mile from the coast, this dwelling is stylish and comfortable (and far enough inland to be safe from any tsunami!). An easy stroll through a pleasant neighborhood will take you down to beautiful sea cliffs with lots of shade, grassy clearings, and scenic vistas. During my stay I was not bothered at all by mosquitoes or other insects. The nights were quiet; I slept very well. There is WiFi for those of you with portable computers. My host was helpful and friendly, without being intrusive; most of the time I felt like I was alone in the house. The grounds are nicely landscaped with many interesting and pretty plants; a work in progress, it will only get better as the vegetation matures. Staying here was one of the high points of my vacation. I hope to return someday. Conveniently situated for exploring the Puna district, this home away from home will delight you! Both Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park are within easy driving distance. There are farmers markets, bakeries, cafes, coffee shops, and many other attractions less than 40 miles away. Be sure to get a visitor's library card for only $10 if you are going to be in Hawaii for a week or longer; books and CDs can be returned to any branch on any island. The best prices for 100% Kona coffee (whole bean or ground) can be found in Hilo at the bigger stores. Don't be afraid to get food from the roadside vendors; great stuff! I particularly enjoyed the lau lau. Take time to just hang out at the guesthouse and relax. You'll be glad you did. The biggest mistake is trying to see too many things in too little time; slow down and you will have a much better experience. You can always come back again. I have been to this island 14 times since 1991 and I still find new things to see and do! On my next trip I hope to live at the Kehena Beach Guesthouse for a week, instead of only 3 nights. You will enjoy staying here.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Wow, what a great experience at Kehena Beach Guest House. Our host was so friendly and helpful from the start, we felt right at home in his company. We arrived in early February ’09, and found the rooms and guest area to be charming, inviting and sparkling clean. We had everything we needed – delicious continental breakfast each morning (our choice of time) wonderful books to read and a home-front tour guide/resource center - and so reasonably priced!. Close to Volcano National Park, Hilo and all the fun points in between. Check out the lava flow show at night, the beach, the hot pools…. Lots to do in the area, lush and gorgeous. I give the Kehena Guest House two thumbs and two big toes UP! We had a fabulous time, made new friends, and I look forward to a return visit ASAP!Did you find this review helpful? If you are looking for clean & comfortable accommodations in Pahoa, I would definitely recommend staying at the Kehena Beach Guesthouse. The property is easy to find, tucked in a newer residential neighborhood with very spacious lots. There is plenty of parking. This 2 story ocean view home has a private guest O’hana just below the main home. Chose to rent either 1 or 2 bedrooms (with queen beds) and you will share a bath & multipurpose room for dining, lounging, hanging out. My mom, aunt & I rented both rooms and loved having the whole space to ourselves. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and taken care of. The simple, modern & tasteful decor encouraged us to feel right at home. Our hosts were so helpful with giving us tips on where to eat, local activity recommendations and even offering water noodles if we wanted to hang out in the nearby hot ponds. Our morning breakfast was so generous & beautiful we wanted to take a picture! I can’t recommend this VRBO enough. Understated and lovely full of Aloha!Did you find this review helpful?
