New cottage in a beautiful tropical setting surrounded by palm trees, hawaiian flowers, fruit trees and large ferns of many
varieties.
Centrally located within 20-30 minutes from historic Hilo town, waterfalls, hot ponds, Volcano's National Park, and flowing lava, how hot is that!
Then, how cool is this! This winter there's lots of snow on Mauna Kea, largest mountain on earth from bottom of sea to top, at over 14,000 ft above sea level, so bring your snowboard! International Observatories on top, some with tours.
Amenities on property include: 2-person kayak, mountain bikes, snorkel gear, beach chairs, tennis rackets, surf boards, boogie boards ping-pong table.
Kitchen is fully stocked with all new appliances including full size fridge, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, cook top, crock pot, even a waffle maker.
Private washer/dryer, indoor and outdoor shower.
Star gaze from bed in the loft across 10' of glass windows or relax on memory foam futon bed on the lower level.
The University of Hawaii Hilo Astronomy Center offers exhibits and shows that could fill an entire day. The Tsunami museum tells all about Hilo, how it was affected by tsunamis and how it was restored to what it is now.
Hike through lava tubes big enough for a bus, check out the steam vents as natural saunas, see ancient petroglyphs, snorkel over colorful live coral reefs, swim with giant sea turtles and schools of tropical fish, see lava pour into the ocean as it creates new land.
There are great mountain bike and hiking trails. Did I mention the Volcano National Park? The visitors center also has a great exhibit of the wildlife and history of Hawaii including a theater with hourly shows of the same.
Then a short drive to the Kileaua gift shop with a cafeteria and restaurant overlooking the huge caldera as steam rises from many spots within, which also can be hiked into and across.
You'll love strolling through historic Hilo Town, as it's the origin of the Hawaiian culture. This quaint, turn of the century town with it's Victorian and plantation style architecture will charm you with it's shops, stores, art studios, and restaurants.
One of the biggest Farmers Markets is there in old town with the best and most diverse selection of produce and flowers from local farmers you can imagine, as well as many artisans and merchants selling their goods in the many booths.
As I mentioned, our warm, clean, cozy garden cottage couldn't be more centrally located from all these activities and sites, this is a great place for your Hawaiian home base.
We can offer guided tours, surf lessons, mountain bike excursions, as well as just point you in the right direction. Call us with any questions and ask about our special rates for seniors.
Keywords: Central location, near lava, waterfalls, 15 minutes to Hilo, kitchenette, nicely furnished, quiet, peaceful, view of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea from property. Discount to the best restaurant in Pahoa.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights. It was our first trip to Hawaii and the owners of the cottage, Barbara and Michael, made sure we felt right at home. The two of them are there to make sure your stay is perfect. No Joke!! The second night they helped us find fresh Spiny Hawaiian lobster and we all had dinner together. It has great central location for the east side of the island. The snorkeling is close by, along with some great little parks like Lava Tree, Warm Ponds or the Lava Tide Pools. Easy to get from one place to another and back to the house. The maintenance, cleanliness and privacy makes this place extremely comfortable. The pictures on the intro-net don't do this place justice. If you need another reason to stay at the cottage, the out door shower is incredible. My girlfriend would get stuck in the shower every night for almost an hour. It is a true slice of paradise all to yourself. I highly recommend this little private cottage for couples and small families to stay here again and again. We will definitely be traveling back and staying at this cottage with our newborn son. This cottage will undoubtably be the highlight of your trip. All others pale in comparison.Ping Pong.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This place is amazing! Beautiful property, clean and comfortable cottage, perfect size with all amenities one could want, and an awesome shower. My cousin and I stayed 3 nights but wish we could live there forever. Barbara and Michael are amazing people, extremely welcoming and gracious hosts, insightful guides to Hawaiian adventures, willing to field calls and give directions when you get lost ? and genuinely great, caring people. They directed and equipped us for snorkeling in tide pools, gave us umbrellas for trekking in Volcanoes NP when it was pouring rain, gave us good directions for the must see spots, and would have done anything to ensure we had what we needed during our stay. We had such a good time at the cottage and I am so thankful that we were able to stay there and especially appreciative of Barbara and Michael because they made my last night in Hawaii extra special. It was perfect ? Mahalo!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My son and I were so grateful to bump into you. You were so kind and offered such a beautiful place to rest our weary heads. I tell everyone I know about your place. We will be back for sure. Next time I hope to be sailing over to your Island when retired. Look forward to my future visit. I highly recommend anyone traveling the Big Island to stop and enjoy your hospitality. Thanks again Barbara!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Loved this cottage. Stayed only one night, should have stayed longer. Exceptionally clean, comfortable and private. Centrally located. Close to Hilo, Pahao, warm springs. Owners, Mike and Barbara, are very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again. Make sure to eat at Kaleo's in Pahoa. Best food in Hawaii.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Our family stayed three nights at this tropical, garden cottage. We were glad to discover that the description was exactly as they said it would be. The two kids loved the loft bed and outdoor shower was five star! The property was very clean and well maintained. And the owners truly reflect the Aloha spirit. I would gladly recommend this property. Staying near Keaau was a central location to adventure to Volcanoes National Park, Puna, and Hilo. Awesome experience! Thank you Michael and Barbara!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

About the owner: My wife, Barbara and I, Michael, are generally very active. We love to hike and bike right here from home as well as surf, swim, and snorkel in the warm waters near by. I'm an artistic, creative carpenter/builder that built our home here in '05 and recently finished building the cottage on the same 3 acres (far enough apart to maintain mutual privacy). Barbara is a waitress at the best restaurant in the area (Kaleo's Bar and Grill). We love what we do, and are thankful to have a piece of paradise. Come experience old Hawaii, you won't want to leave.
Why the Owner Chose Keaau:
We bought here 10 years ago after many years living on Maui (nice place to visit but you want to live here). It's Old Hawaii, not so touristy. And when they say the 'Big Island' they mean it. You can buy acres here compared to square feet. It's all spread out and roomy. You don't even see your neighbors in these rural areas but at the same time everyone is generally very warm and easy to get to know. It's a very friendly place to visit and live.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
When your here you'll feel like the only people on the planet, other than an occasional and distant passer by. You'll be taken by the unspoiled Hawaiian landscape and the sounds of birds singing. Sunrise is my favorite time, but sunset is pretty awesome too, from our lanai.
