Spanish Wells cottage description
Sea Fan is the most grand and spacious of the historic cottages located in the quaint and charming settlement of Spanish Wells Eleuthera Bahamas. This charming, historic cottage is perched on a crest of a gently sloping hill and offers outstanding panoramic views. Lounge on the top deck and marvel at the view of the ocean and its seven shades of blue or the harbour and the colorful sailboats passing by. The beautiful garden at Sea Fan offers tropical plants in a rainbow of colors, and a variety of tropical fruit trees. Sea Fan is located in the middle of the historic settlement of Spanish Wells Eleuthera Bahamas and is surrounded by quaint shops, eateries, home bakeries, and more. A straight path from Sea Fan to the north will take guests on a short stroll to an unspoiled and uncrowded light pink sandy beach, and a straight path from Sea Fan to the south, will take guests to the harbour where they may chat with fishermen and purchase the catch of the day.
The ground floor at Sea Fan offers a large open great room. The kitchen is fully equipped and open to the dining and living areas. Also on the ground floor is a king bedroom, a queen bedroom, a full bathroom, and laundry facilities. The covered porch is a great place to relax at the end of the day and wave to passersby many of whom will stop to have a friendly chat. The back deck offers an area for outdoor dining and barbecue grilling.
The top floor at Sea Fan offers a large bedroom with a queen bed and a double bed along with a large full bathroom en suite. There is also an open loft bedroom with a queen size bed. The private sun deck is a great place to take in the ocean, sea, and harbour views, and to read a book or do a little sun tanning if guests choose.
Since Sea Fan is located on the crest of a gently sloping hill, there is a seldom a day without balmy breezes, which means the cottage is very comfortable most days throughout the year with guests enjoying open windows, paddle fans, and the fresh air. (There is also A/C throughout the house for those guests that prefer such.) This historic cottage is fully-equipped, charming, and relaxing, and makes an ideal home away from home.
Sea Fan offers free use of bicycles and a 2-man ocean kayak; these are great for exploring the area. (Otherwise, bicycles and ocean kayaks are expensive to rent separately.) Sea Fan also offers free unlimited WiFi.
Beds: Ground floor: 1 king, 1 queen, 1 queen sofa sleeper. Beds: Top floor: 2 queen, 1 full. Accommodates up to 8 adults and 3 small children.

A taste of the real Bahamas
A taste of the real Bahamas
Our family of six adults and two teenagers spent two weeks at Sea Fan in November. We have been to a few other Bahamian islands and we have decided to we like Spanish Wells the most. It is very laid back and safe with friendly locals. We received gifts of fresh avocados and sour oranges from the owners, since these fruit were growing in local orchards in abundance when we were there. Our teenagers made friends by the second day and were receiving invitations for golf cart cruising, playing frisbee at the beach, and to youth group and junior church meetings at the three local churches. The Sea Fan cottage is such a charming historic home, and more spacious than the photos show. We all had lots of room. The harbour and ocean views and breezes were wonderful. We got a sun tan on the top deck while sipping on rum runners, we enjoyed paddling the kayak around the island - great scenery, we cycled around to the various stores, quilt makers, and fishermen. We rented a golf cart and a boat for our vacation. The golf cart is great for exploring Spanish Wells and Russell Island and the many trips to the local grocery store, Food Fair. We took the boat to Meek's Patch, Ben Bay, Royal Island, and more... we had wonderful beach picnics and the guys did well fishing. There is an absolutely amazing beach just 200m north of Sea Fan. It is a great beach for walking or jogging and there are seldom more than a dozen persons on the entire 2+ mile stretch of beach. Wonderful! Just one call to Lorraine and she took care of cottage, boat, and golf cart rental - all at the best prices in town. Lorraine and Brent greeted us and got us settled and were just around the corner if we needed anything during our vacation. The restaurants were okay. The prices are good. Be prepared, however, to spend a bit more for food at the food stores. Fresh seafood on the grill was our best choice for dinner. We purchased fresh crab, lobster, and fish from Scuba. (We found fresh seafood in Spanish Wells less expensive than back home.) We were happy to find this little piece of Paradise. We returned home relaxed with suntans and fond memories.

Owner response: We are so happy that you had a wonderful stay at Sea Fan, and thank you for appreciating the charm of the cottage. Yes, many persons visiting Spanish Wells for the first time tell us that they prefer Spanish Wells to any of the other Bahamian islands that they have visited. Spanish Wells does have a reputation of being a very friendly place. We are more than happy to provide our guests with fresh produce in season. We are happy to hear that you all had fun exploring the area by golf cart and boat. Glad to see that the boys were staying in shape by jogging more than two miles on the beach every day. Scuba says hello and that he will save some big crab claws for your next visit. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Better Every Time

Spanish Wells (St. George's Cay) is often described with this caveat: "it's not for everyone." We really hope that remains the case. Spanish Wells/Russell Island welcomes tourists not because the community must do so to survive, but because the community is genuinely interested in sharing a way of life that is incredibly rare these days. Things are pretty much the same as when I first set foot on the island s a kid almost 4 decades ago. That's not to infer that infrastructure is in any way primitive; no, Spanish Wells definitely has its act together as compared to the rest of The Bahamas. No amount of money spent on an upscale vacation to Harbour Island will buy you assurance that the power will remain on or the water flowing. But you can be almost certain that the lights will remain on in Spanish Wells. You can also be certain that you'll have the opportunity to connect with history. It's present in the way people speak, in the family names, in the faces. Think about the last time you visited a place where the residents' ancestry reached back nearly 400 years to the very same soil and sea. The place is compelling to anyone willing to maintain open eyes and ears. Unfortunately, there are some unflattering myths out there, for example, racial prejudice. I have seen no evidence of that. In fact, the island's Anglo-Saxon appearance is attributable to the community's rejection of slavery at a time when all the other islands capitulated. Even today, the do-it-yourself work ethic is very much alive and well. Did I mention the place is beautiful and the fishing is world class? Rent a boat through Bahama Vacation Homes and do some exploring. If you're not comfortable handling a boat or navigating, hire Capt. Smiley or Capt. Scuba (a.k.a., Brent or Brian) to give you some pointers or show you around. When in Spanish Wells, do as the locals do: catch your own dinner!

Owner response: It was wonderful to welcome you back to Sea Fan a second time. You are so correct: Spanish Wells is NOT for every one. While Spanish Wells does offer restaurants and a variety of many shops, those vacationers looking for casinos, big hotels, McDonalds, and such should not vacation in Spanish Wells. Spanish Wells does offer the most reliable utility services available in The Bahamas. Spanish Wells is, indeed, a quaint, historic fishing village that offers world class bonefishing, reef fishing, and deep sea fishing. The town is clean, pristine, and safe, and the beach is amazing. There are always things to do in a relaxing way - beachcombing, shelling, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, para sailing, wind surfing, kite boarding, "chilling" in a hammock, cycling, exploring by boat, exploring by golf cart, visiting with local fishermen and vendors, and just relaxing and enjoying time with loved ones. No hurry. No worries. We are looking forward to welcoming you back soon.
A fine place to relax
A fine place to relax
This cottage is perfect is you are looking for a laid-back, relaxing, mellow vacation. The patio in the back is perfect for breakfast, and the front porch and balcony with its marvelous view are lovely, shady spots to relax in the afternoon. The kitchen is a good size, and had everything we needed (except for something to crack open the crab claws - we improvised with a rock!) to create some very memorable meals. The bedrooms and living room are clean and serviceable. The bathrooms were acceptable, though the water pressure for the shower was weak. The house next door keeps a flock of chickens who have no respect for property boundaries and visited us on a regular basis. They didn't bother us for the most part, though were rather noisy quite early on a couple of mornings. The location is ideal, being a few minutes walk to a wonderful beach in one direction, and an equal distance to the harbour in the other. We rented a golf cart for the week, and it served us well for touring around the island and picking up groceries. The bikes and kayak are very nice to have; it is quite easy to bike around the entire island and the kayak allowed us to get a different view of the harbour and to get some close-up views of wildlife - bonefish, rays, herons and egrets. The beach is amazing - we never ceased being intrigued with the movement of the tides, and found many conch during low tide. The water is very shallow for quite a distance out and we whiled away many hours wading, swimming and floating in the clear, turquoise waters. The twenty-somethings travelling with us spent a lot of quality time fishing. Spanish Wells has the feel of a small town from the past; people take time to stop and chat, everyone waves as they pass by and the town is clean, safe and pretty. There aren't any bars or nightclubs, no amusement parks or laser tag, but there is excellent swimming, fishing, kayaking, and sunset-viewing. The few restaurants have limited menus and the food on offer is basic. With the exception of the conch chowder, which was excellent, we preferred to eat at home. Excellent seafood purchased from the local fish shop and great home-made buns from the grocery store made for some delicious home-made meals. The nights are very quiet in Spanish Wells, and the dark sky and lack of ambient light made for some great star watching. The cottage was perfect for the type of vacation we wanted - quiet, relaxing, lots of sun, water and outdoor activities.

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. When I spoke to you on your departure, Ken said he wanted to stay another week. Then, when he got back home to cold and snow, he wrote saying that he really had wished he had stayed another week! Yes, the location of Sea Fan is ideal and only a minute or two walk from a fantastic secluded beach or a minute or two walk to the harbour/boat rentals, etc. Yes, most of our renters enjoy the bicycles and kayak and are able to explore all around the island with them. There is some amazing wildlife in the area including bonefish, rays, herons, egrets, dophins, and even a resident manatee now and then. There is excellent fishing / snorkeling offered in the area also. There are few chickens may come and go, but are usually no bother to most persons. (Harbour Island is one of the most expensive islands around, and they have so many chickens that the chicken has almost become the Harbour Island logo.) The water pressure may vary on the island according to the city supply. (If the water pressure is ever too low, renters may call us and have us switch to a back up supply with pressure tank. ) Yes, indeed, Sea Fan is great for those seeking a quiet, relaxing, lots of sun, water, and outdoor activities vacation. I'm hoping you guys stay warm up in the freezing north. The warmest sunny smiles are being sent to you from Spanish Wells. (This particular guest says that 5 stars ***** should only go to accommodations that are luxury and very high end. This quaint historic cottage doesn't pretend to be either.)
A UNIQUE COTTAGE IN A UNIQUE TOWN ON A UNIQUE ISLAND
A UNIQUE COTTAGE IN A UNIQUE TOWN ON A UNIQUE ISLAND
It's the kind of place we would build in the Bahamas today if money were no object. Sea Fan cottage is very close to the dock where our rental boat was waiting for us and also an easy walk to the beach. Though we visited during the warm summer solstice, Sea Fan's it's perfect hillside location allowed the summer sea breezes to circulate throughout the cottage and the air conditioners sat idle. The spearfishing was great, the resulting meals were delicious, and Lorraine, Brent and Brian were gracious as always. If you want a commercialized, tropical-anywhere kind of vacation, don't come to Spanish Wells. If you want a taste of the real Bahamas and you value kind, sincere and exemplary hosts, come to Spanish Wells/Eleuthera and stay at one of Lorraine's properties. (Before Sea Fan Cottage we stayed at Turtle Cove and had an equally grand time). Thanks again for a great vacation! See you next winter.

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate it. Since we helped you find that perfect water front lot to purchase, you may soon be building your own dream home in Paradise! Sea Fan is located on a narrow part of the island, and does offer a wonderful central location with the rental boat docks just at the bottom of the hill and the beautiful beach of Spanish Wells just a quick stroll in the opposite direction. Most days the cottage enjoys nice sea breezes. Spanish Wells is known as the fishing capital of The Bahamas; the fishing around the island is excellent. We are always happy to help you guys have a wonderful vacation. We'll see you next winter.
We threaten to return to this piece of paradise!

Wonderful Sea Fan!! Better than we imagined. A lovely rental home that served as our home away from home for our week's vacation. Sea Fan offers all the amenities that are needed for the perfect vacation. This home is decorated with taste and elegance, yet comfortable enough to enjoy. While the description is accurate about it being a short distance to both the harbor and the beautiful swimming beach, a golf cart is really quite necessary as the house is perched high on the hill and walking would take a lot of energy. We saw many local folks walking their bikes up the hill. Lorraine and Brent were great, providing whatever information/rentals we needed. Thank you, Lorraine and Brent. Every convenience is here for you to enjoy and the people in Spanish Wells are truly special. We made many friends here and cannot wait to return. P. S. Keep the secret!!

Owner response: We are always happy to hear that guests have enjoyed Sea Fan and Spanish Wells and many renters return each year. The young enjoy navigating the gentle sloping hills of Spanish Wells by foot or bicycle, but for the rest of us the optional golf cart rental is the perfect means of transportation around the island.
Spanish Wells is a wonderful place to visit! Sea Fan was the perfect fit for our family of nine! The bedrooms were cozy and the living space was great. Sea Fan is charming, one of our favorite places to hang out in the evening was the front porch. The breezes were refreshing and the A/C was never needed. The beaches of Spanish Wells are amazing! Pictures certainly do not do the beauty of Spanish Wells justice. If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing family vacation, this is the perfect place. Lorraine was great in accomodating us and answering our many questions. We hope to come back......soon!

My daughter and I spent two weeks in December at Sea Fan. Family and friends (four persons) joined us for a long weekend and the home provided a perfect place to catch up and have great dinner parties. We love the home with its old world charm and perfect location. The deck on the second floor was great for tanning and reading, I spent many hours there! The home is in the middle of Spanish Wells near stores where we loved to shop, as well as within walking distance of the beautiful beach. The weather, except for two days, was perfect. This was not our first visit to Spanish Wells but it was our first stay at Sea Fan. We have many friends there from our previous visits and were happy to be back. Lorraine & Brent were always available if we needed anything during our stay. We went back to the USA relaxed with beautiful tans. WE WILL B BACK!

Owner response: Thank you for your comments. Yes, Sea Fan is spacious enough to have extra guests and dinner parties. Most consider it the most charming and quaint cottage in the area. All renters seem to love to spend time on the top deck, which offers sea views and a good place to tan. Sea Fan is close to stores that offer island made goods such as sea shells, sea shell jewelry, straw bags, nice T-shirts, and upscale island accessories. The wonderful beach of Spanish Wells is located just a minute or two stoll away. Most days are balmy and sunny even through the middle of winter. Most guests seem to quickly make local friends around the island. We would definitely enjoy having you return.
