LOVE SCUBA Shack and cannot wait to go back! On our second trip to Grand Cayman we traveled with a party of 7 and had just as an amazing time as the first. Everything worked well while we were there. It was very convenient to have satellite TV, a DVD library, internet and telephone during our stay. The kitchen is well equipped and there were plenty of beach towels and linens for us. There are multiple places to dine nearby and we frequented Kurt's Kitchen (delicious and most affordable) Tukka (pricey but well worth it) and Over the Edge (convenient and tasty, but mostly convenient). When you eat at Tukka, and you should, there is a small shop across the street that is a must if you want handmade Caymanian souvenirs. The gentleman that was working when we were there was a delight and offered a discount even before I made my purchases. His mother made the bracelet I am wearing today. Rick gives very detailed information prior to your arrival at SCUBA Shack. Please, heed all of his advice. Especially when it comes to going to get groceries. You will be on your own on Sundays so for Saturday arrivals, a trip to the store is necessary. The diving was nothing short of amazing. The coast of Cayman is a bit sharp and rocky but once you clear the initial bits of reef it's smooth diving (bring dive booties or water shoes). I dove my first wall there and it's at a very reasonable depth, about 65-75 feet. I tried to list everything I saw and well, there just wasn't enough air in the tank to take it all in. Healthy coral, numerous conchs, sea fans, schools of the prettiest violet-blue fish I've ever seen, squirrel fish, barracuda, angels, lionfish, etc. Unfortunately, the water became too rough later in the week to continue shore diving but we did get the chance to snorkel at Morrits' dock. A resort on the east end. There we saw tarpon, stingrays, starfish, flounder, lobster and my favorite, trunk fish. SCUBA Shack's beach is fabulous for shelling. I saw only 2 other people walking the beach the entire week we were there so there isn't much competition. Lots of sea glass also. The condos next door posed no invasion of privacy during our stay. We all felt very much at home and weren't imposed upon by anyone. The property manager checked in with us once or twice to make sure our needs were met. Roland made it a point to only come if we called as he said "you are on vacation and not to be bothered while you are here." Oh! and the sunsets...just go already. ;)

my family recently stayed at scuba shack and we had a wonderful vacation. This was the perfect hpuse for pur family ( four kids ages 2, 6, 8 , 12) my husband and my parents. we had plenty of room and al the amenities of home. the beach outside of the house is great- we looked for shells and sea creatures everyday, took out the kayaks provided by the owners an used the pool everyday. i was worried taht the locatio would be inconvenient but it was perfect- close to a small grocery and dive shops and away from the crowded seven mile beach area. the owner, ron, and his business partner, rick, were great and happy to answer any questions, provide details where needed and offer suggestions...i would say even beyond the call of duty. we will definitely be back to the scuba shack. we have been to dozens of beach destinations and cayman was our favorite because of 1. the awesome home we stayed in 2. the friendly people and 3. the awesome diving!!!!

My wife, myself and three boys (18, 12, and 10) stayed here for the last week of July, 2012. We were very pleased. My wife and I travelled to CI once before styaing in a condo and liked the North side of the island. For this this trip, we wanted to rent a house on the quieter side of the island. Scuba Shack was a great fit for us. The view was excellent. The house had all the amenities we needed to feel at home, there was internet service when we needed it and watched M. Phelps win some golds at the London Olympics. The owner and his property manager were attentive to any of our needs (offered a kayak, bicyles and snorkeling gear for use!!!). We like to play in the water and the snorkeling off the covered back veranda was great with excellent water clarity. A highlight was the nurse shark (not dangerous) that swam underneath and then off while we were snorkeling. Finally, the location is very conveinent, close to the cut through road to Georgetown and equal distance from Rum Point (right) and the Morrits resort area/small grocery store (left) with some great snorkeling areas in between.

This is our third stay at Scuba Shack. Our family has loved every trip (we have a teenage daughter)! If you don't want the crowds and traffic of Seven Mile Beach, Scuba Shack is the place. The shore diving behind the house is great (all of us are divers). There is a mini wall about a 100 yards out and then the big wall is a little farther. The place is fully equipped with wireless internet, Vonage phone(for free calling to the US), Large screen TV with Dish service and a VCR/DVD player. They have a great selection of VCRs and DVDs. There is a private pool and cabana with hammocks. The beach is somewhat small with iron shore at the water, but you can walk either way if walking on the beach is your thing. There are a number of good restaurants nearby (Kaibo, Over the Edge, and Tukkas being our favorites) and a grocery store about 10 minutes away. The place was spotless when we arrived and the owner usually checks to make sure everything is good during the stay. They have a property manager who is always on call to deal with any issues (we haven't needed him, but have met him). The Tuesday night music at Kaibo is good and if you really miss the crowds, the drive to downtown is about 40 minutes. Make sure there are no cruise ships in the harbor if you decide to go to town. I would recomend to any friend, with the stipulation they let me come along. A car is a must, and if you get tired of shore diving, Ocean Frontiers is about 15 minutes east. The owners also provide bikes, kayaks, limited snorkling gear and a gas grill. The owner is very open about answering any questions, they want you to enjoy your stay. The sunsets are terrific and if you turn off the outside lights at nights, the stars are unbelievable. The only negative thing I can say about our visits to Scuba Shack is having to leave paradise to come home. Remember, "Drive on the Right."

After carefully reviewing the pictures of this great looking home we decided on an eleven day stay at Scuba Shack Cayman Islands. This part of the island is quiet and easy to drive around and the home has at least five places to eat lunch or dinner nearby at average island prices. We have stayed at several villas over the years all around the same price mark. The house was decorated very nicely, and was very clean. The owner was helpful and provided all info. before we arrived. We rented a car from McCurleys and they were a pleasure as well. They picked us up at arrival, and returned us to the airport at departure. Our disappointment in this rental was on arrival. As we drove up the long open grassy driveway an enormous second story rental complex/hotel that is less than a stone throw away. On the other side of the villa sits another home similar looking to Scuba Shack, but even closer to us which is also owned by Scuba Shacks owner. The covered Cabana that you see in the picture really belongs to the house next door, which is occupied by the owners' young daughter. Here is where you can get the massage therapy if you wish. If you are into cooking it lacks basic spices to cook with, so you will need to bring them. The sheets on the beds need replacing (bleach stained and old). The Satellite T.V. is a nightmare to operate, and there is no t.v. signal in the bedroom t.v. The pool is nice, and kept clean. The facility next door looks down on you, so there is not much privacy in that area. In the evening if you would like to use the Cabana it may be occupied which makes it awkward and at times felt as if it was not ours at all. Photos to this villa were taken with extreme care not to show what it really looks like. The beach area is very narrow before a large area of sharp and jagged rock outcroppings go out to the ocean;scuba entrance only. .If you are expecting to wade out into a soft sandy area, forget it. You will need rubber shoes. You will have to find other beach areas, which are not that far. Mosquitoes are wicked as soon as the sun goes down, so if not for the screened in porch you are their next meal. We mostly ate at Kurt's Corner and Over the Edge. So, would we recommend it? If you're looking for privacy, we wouldn't recommend it; otherwise, it was o.k..

Owner response: This guest made some legitimate comments and left a note for me with various complaints. I arrived the day he left as part of my normal maintenance/inspection schedule. Most of the concerns were addressed within 24 hours. Unfortunately, I had the interior of the house painted two weeks before this guest arrived, and the painter disconnected alot of things and did not reconnect them properly, so there were some technical issues with the internet, the Vonage line, the desk top computer and the television for 2 weeks. The lines and cables to the internet, toll free international phones and television were replaced because we upgraded all of these systems the week after the guest left. The desktop has been replaced and a second international toll free phone system has been added so two people can call the States at the same time. These upgrades were already scheduled. The linens and comforters were also replaced the same week as part of the normal schedule. I do regret that this guest felt my daughter next door intruded on the privacy of the area, but this has been fixed - she no longers lives there. This guest booked online and is one of the few guest that I did not speak with via telephone prior to arrival. Before you book Scuba Shack, you should have a conversation with me so I can find out what you are looking for, and what special needs you have. I am very quick to suggest an alternate property, or even an alternate island, if it sounds like you are looking for something different than what we offer. The information that I send to all guest via email prior to arrival explains that the ocean meets ironshore, not sand, and that aqua shoes are needed. I don't understand the comment about a "narrow" beach, as the Scuba Shack beach is about 80 feet deep, making it one of the deepest beaches of any ocean front lot on the entire east side of the island. You can stay on 7 mile beach if you want a wider sand beach, but you will have people all over you. Detailed photos of the beach are on the web site. There are condos next door. The footprint of the nearest condo is about 40 feet away to the west from the nearest point of scuba shack. Likewise, the owners' one bedroom property is about 40 feet to the east of scuba shack. I do not provide photos of the condos or the one bedroom house. The unique feature of the Scbua Shack lot is that we are over a hundred yards from the highway, while most houses on cayman are within 20 yards of the highway.

This was a great stay. The house feels as comfortable as home. The owner has perfected the art of labels and instructions so that the many conveniences are simple to use. We really liked the house layout as well -- you can put your feet up in the living room, on the screened porch, outside by the pool, or in the gazebo down by the water. This is the second time we have stayed on the north shore. We'll probably do it again. We prefer the quiet. Yet, with the location at Old Man Bay you're close to Rum Point and not that far from Georgetown. The owner is very reliable and did everything promised. We've booked happily through VRBO many times, and this is one of our best experiences.

We just returned from a wonderful week at Scuba Shack. We are a party of 5 adults who wanted a private, relaxing beach setting for casual shore diving and ocean kayaking. Scuba Shack exceeded our expectations. The home is very spacious, clean, comfortably appointed and well stocked with beach towels and bed linens. It is situated to maximize ocean views across the back of the home, with a wonderful screened area with a cooling ceiling fan for that brief time at sunset when it gets a bit too buggy for some. There's a nice outdoor picnic area, but the majority of the time was spent relaxing in the large kabana which is adjacent to the beach and private pool. We had an abundance of quiet, privacy and a gorgeous beach to enjoy. The owner could simply not be more accommodating and the property manager met us at the outset to show us the ropes and make sure we had what we needed. For divers, the setting was perfect for leisurely shore diving with a concrete path over the ironshore for staging gear. The "wall" is approximately a 150 yard kick out from the shore, where you are rewarded with a healthy, diverse marine environment with beautiful underwater topography. The home's garage is set up with tile floor and racks to spread out SCUBA gear to dry between dives. There are kayaks, bicycles, masks and snorkels for use as well as a nice propane grill - which we used to grill several nice steak dinners. Old Man Bay is quiet and scenic, there are several small grocery stores as well as a good local restaurant. Rum Point is nearby for an easy and quick Sting Ray City tour, as well as fine dining. Scuba Shack is highly recommended, our only regret is we didn't have a month to spend there!

My husband and I have returned from our wonderful vacation on Grand Cayman and I wanted to say how much we enjoyed staying at the Scuba Shack and the North side of the island! The home was absolutely lovely and the property manager Roland was very helpful! Having the pool was fantastic since the water was a little too rough for entry for a few days, although that made the sound and sight of the waves even better! We followed the advice to bring swim socks for walking the beach and getting into the water, which was very helpful. We found the island easy to drive, but also enough conveniently located on the north side so that anything we wanted was a quick trip there and back. Great island, great home! We had a terrific time! We enjoyed our vacation immensely! The Scuba Shack oceanfront home is in a great spot, away from the hectic side of the Island. The home sat in a beautiful location, we loved the private pool, beach area and spacious home itself. We are also big game players and readers, so we loved the game selection and the extra books. We would definitely visit again! The Niergarth family

We had some great diving during our week stay, but a few days the weather turned bad in our area. The owner knew we were divers so he called and gave us directions to some protected areas where we could snorkel and dive without having to worry about the ocean conditions. My kids enjoyed the video library, and there were plenty of books at the house we could take out to the kabana and enjoy..

                          Year Purchased: 2001

About the owner: Connie and Rick Ritchie Connie and I met the first week of college and have been married for 25 years. We bought this property in 2001 and named it 'Scuba Shack' because of the great coral reef and wall diving behind the house. Connie is a scuba instructor and I am a divemaster. We lived in this property for a few years and still enjoy it several months a year, although we reside in the US most of the time.

Why the Owner Chose Old Man:
Connie and I are scuba divers. We chose Grand Cayman because it has the best wall diving in the Caribbean. We chose this lot because we had been diving behind the house and noticed it was a great dive area. From shore, you swim directly over coral reef on the way to the north wall, which starts at a depth of 60 feet. When we noticed there was a 2 acre lot for sale on this private beach, we purchased it immediately. The amount of underwater wildlife is significant, but there are also wild parrots and blue iguanas in the area.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This is one of the most private areas of Grand Cayman. The beach is great for beachcombers, as the prevailing currents come right into Old Man Bay. The beach is 60 to 70 feet wide, between the vegetation and the ironshore. There is a significant amount of undeveloped lots to the east, and sea turtles use this beach to lay eggs most of the summer. The property is walking distance from the Mastic Trail and the Old Man Bay boat docks. It is only about two hundred yards form the bat cave trail, which leads to numerous limestone caves, many of which provide shelter for Carribean bats.
