Quadra Island house description
Located on beautiful Quadra Island, one of the Discovery Islands in the BC Gulf Islands chain. This lovely 2,800 square foot waterfront home overlooks Drew Harbor and Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park. With it's open floor plan and comfortable, yet casual decor, it is the perfect destination for groups or multiple family get togethers, with plenty of room for all. The house is conveniently located within walking distance of amenities of Heriot Bay including marina, restaurant, pub, shops, services, bike rentals, and ferry to Cortez Island. It is a short drive to Quathiaski Cove, the southern hub of Quadra Island and BC Ferry Terminal to Campbell River on Vancouver Island.
Located between Vancouver Island and Mainland BC, Quadra Island is a short ferry ride from Campbell River, considered the salmon fishing capitol of the world. Quadra Island is known for eco tourism and family friendly sea kayaking adventures. A full service marina, restaurant, pub, and groceries are available at nearby Heriot Bay. Enjoy the vibrant community life and stop by the weekly farmer's market. Take a class or attend an event at the Community Center, or visit Aroma's Cafe for a relaxed cup of tea or organic, free trade coffee. Take the time to savor the slower pace, and you'll never miss the fast food restaurants and box stores while you are here!
Easy access to beach
A natural path wanders down from the house to the beach. The warm, shallow, protected water makes it ideal for children to explore, and for swimming or launching kayaks. Bald eagles often land on the beach to feast on shellfish at low tide. Seals and otter are frequent seen in the water, along with seabirds and other wildlife. Rock work and driftwood section of beach provides shelter and seating, and is a perfect place to enjoy an informal cookout or marshmallow roast. A walk along the beach at low tide provides access to Rebecca Spit Maritime Provincial Park.
Beautiful, peaceful garden and grounds
The garden and grounds provide many intimate places to stop and take in the view from various locations on the property. There are berries, fruit trees, kiwi vines, an arbor, seating, and a lovely deck to be discovered as one follows the cobblestone pathways that wind through the grounds. The garden structures and railings feature the eclectic use of rock, cedar, and driftwood, which brings elements of both the forest and beach to the garden and grounds, contributing to a sense of continuity between the grounds and the natural environment the garden is set in.

Perfect for family get together
Perfect for family get together
I am writing this on our last night at the Heriot Bay House - still on a vacation high after a wonderfully relaxing week. There were three families who met here to reunite for a week and the house couldn't have been more perfect. The sleeping arrangements were comfortable and offered lots of options - even though it says it sleeps 12, you could easily add children or teenagers to the futons. We even considered having our three-year-old sleep on the spacious window seat in our bedroom. The house is very children friendly with a casual beach-house feel. No carpets here for little sandy toes - the floors were easy to keep clean and allowed us to not worry about letting the kids come and go freely. The children spent most of the time on the beach - wandering down in the morning still in their PJs. There were plenty of board games, toys and a TV for the kids to use. However, the beach was really the best entertainment. As adults, we spent every evening on the fantastically large deck or on the beach watching the ever-changing view of the beach, sky and water. The home is well maintained although there were a few quirks to figure out - one of the electrical outlets in the kitchen isn't working and there is a limited amount of kitchen counter for preparing meals. But overall, everything was in working order and had a familiar lived-in feel. As people familiar with the west coast, we were still pleasantly surprised with Quadra Island. Rebecca Spit is easily accessible. We kayaked over regularly. We also explored the vineyard on the south end of the island, went to the cultural centre and experienced the most amazing whale watching trip of our lives - orcas and dolphins swimming under and around our zodiac. Yesterday we discovered Open Bay which offers a truly sandy beach to play on. Easily five stars. We will be reserving another week here next summer.

Lovely family time at Heriot Bay House
Lovely family time at Heriot Bay House
I stayed at HBH for a week with my husband, sons and extended family. The kids had a great time discovering the huckleberries in the yard, the beach, and of course, all the toys, perfect for my sons, aged 3 and 7months. The 6 of us adults had ample room, and spent our time in upstairs basking in the view, cooking in the wonderful kitchen and on the bbq on the porch, and hanging out on the balcony. The location was excellent, near Rebecca Spit and the We Wai Kai campgrounds (they sold us fantastic locally raised scallops!), and of course the grocery store and the Heriot Bay Inn pub and restaurant. Most of all, the quiet calm of the place was just so relaxing, and provided our family a great place for us to spend quality time.

Heriot Bay House
Heriot Bay House
I just returned from 2 weeks at the Heriot Bay House on Quadra Island Aug 11-25. I would highly recommend this ocean front home for a family vacation. It could accommodate two families with children or in our case a family with adult children. It is on 2 levels with 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths and one half bath. There is a large deck with awesome ocean views and a barbeque with patio furniture. There are some new windows with window seats that look over the Heriot Bay and the views beyond. There is a full laundry area with new appliances. The location is excellent as it is close to the grocery store, kayak and bike rental place, Taku wharf, Rebecca Spit for picnics and beach combing. The house has steps down to a beach which is small stones but safe for children as the bay was almost always completely calm. The landscaping is really lovely with flowers and ferns. There is a small yard with grass where children could play games. This is the third summer we have vacationed here as we love the ocean and the fishing. We caught salmon and you can buy fresh scallops from the First Nations campground on Rebecca Spit. Quadra Island is very quiet and the people are friendly. Every Saturday morning there is a market about a 15 minute drive away from the house. Everything you need is on the island. There are lots of hiking trails to explore. The owner was accessible and ready to help with anything. The home was very clean with adequate linens, towels, dishes, pots, small appliances etc. There is a new flat screen TV with DVD player and you can rent movies from the store. You can also connect to the internet. There is a carport for 2 cars. If you had a boat you could anchor it in the bay as it is quite protected and shallow. In my opinion it was also priced well for what you have in this home. Thanks,

Fabulous family vacation
Fabulous family vacation
We spent a wonderful week in this house with another family. We kayaked, hiked, fished, read, relaxed, and looked across the water at snow-covered mountains on the mainland. The house is comfortable, spacious, and has everything you need. It is ideal for families with children or teens. The window seat in the dining room, looking over the water, was the perfect spot for many of us. We found Quadra delightful, and will definitely return to th Heriot Bay house.

Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: I am a mother and a retired medical professional. I have focused the last few years of my life on my family and am looking forward to spending more time on on Quadra Island now that my youngest is in college. We love getting in sync with the slower pace of Quadra, taking in the view, and puttering in the garden. The Community Center offers great events that we enjoy, and having coffee and a snack at Aroma's is the best! We came to Quadra Island for an extended family vacation in 2002, and fell in love with it. We decided that we wanted to move here someday, and purchased the Heriot Bay House for that purpose. We visit at least a couple times a year, and now rent it at other times. We hope to retire here someday and enjoy the home with our children and grandchildren (that we also hope to have!) In addition to the Heriot Bay house, we also own another home in the Lake Tahoe area. I enjoy making them available to others, not only because the income helps support the expense of maintaining and improving them, but because I think that sharing is important. I also believe in supporting local economies. So it is my practice to spend all the income earned from the Heriot Bay House on Quadra Island. By investing the money earned on Quadra Island into improvements and services, I can support the local economy of a place I love. Since I believe that resources should be put to beneficial purpose, I appreciate knowing that these vacation homes are being more fully used and enjoyed until I can make the transition and call Quadra home!
Why the Owner Chose Quadra Island:
The Heriot Bay House is conveniently located near shops and services of Heriot Bay and Marina. The floor plan is especially suited to two families, or extended families traveling together, and the size (2800 square feet) sets it apart from may other homes, even with the same bedroom and bathroom count. It has been gradually transformed over the years from a quaint artist cabin and studio with an amazing view and location, to include more amenities, windows, and landscaping. However there are still some remnants of it's humble beginnings. For example we have not yet gotten around to adding a dishwasher or changing the stove. That will likely come soon, but I really like doing my dishes by hand and I dislike replacing appliances that work, just because they are old. Call it a quirk... I think it is green.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location near Rebecca Spit Provincial Park is a unique feature of this property. Rebecca Spit is one of the 'must see' locations on Quadra Island, known for it's easy hiking, wonderful beaches, a public boat ramp, grassy picnic areas, and views. At low tide is is easy to walk along the beach to Rebecca Spit, or it is an easy paddle across Drew Harbour.
