Island Oasis - Relaxing Elegance-Golf, Beach and Walking Fun

Understated bungalow beautifully renovated to reflect the relaxed elegance of the turn of the century, but in keeping with today's no hassle and busy life style. Across the street from the beach, and the bike path that takes you all over the island. Jekyll is a small island with a small town feel. It is geared to family vacations, and relaxed retreats. The rich and easily accessible natural environment makes it a wonderful place to experience the coastal region with trails along Spanish moss draped Oaks and bushy palmettos. Active bird rookeries, shorebirds, and nesting bald eagles make it an exciting place for birdwatchers.
This home was built when Georgia bought the island from the Millionaires and created a state owned park. It backs up to a large tract of undeveloped interior maritime forest on the island. The house is equipped with 5 televisions, wireless Internet, and free long distance calling so you can remain connected even while enjoying a time apart.
Why the Owner Chose Jekyll Island: This is a wonderful location on an extraordinary little Island. Because 65% of the island must remain undeveloped the natural assets can be found all around you. For me, Jekyll is all about nature: fresh and brackish water wetlands; wildlife like wood storks, roseate spoonbills, alligators, turtles, manatees, dolphins, shorebirds, deer (in the yard); wildflowers, mushrooms, lichens, the spartina marsh, fishing, all of it. I am interested in the many walking trails and bike trails. The easy-walk out the door- opportunities people have to engage the natural environment here. I hope folks will visit the turtle center and take the walking and biking trails everywhere. The trail behind the house goes for several miles around the interior of the island and you can have some great adventures just walking or biking along the trails. Early in the morning I love to get out and walk along the beach. There is a nice breeze, and the world seems to be at peace there.
The Unique Benefits of this House: I enjoy the experience of being on Jekyll Island. I like walking to the beach to watch the sun rise up from the Atlantic Ocean. I enjoy taking my wife Sandra across the island to the Rah bar for an informal meal on the pier and watching the sun set. It goes down over the Sidney Lanier Bridge across the 'Marshes of Glynn'. I enjoy fixing and eating steamed shrimp on our back patio. Jekyll Island Authority often have special events for everyone to enjoy. Our family enjoys walking down along the beach to watch the fireworks displays on the 4th of July and New Years Eve. I like biking around the island. The bike trails have been improved and, because of the flat easy trails, biking is comfortable for everyone. During the football season, I like lazing around in the den and watching bowl games. There are plenty of places to watch TV, a DVD or play computer games, so if the kids want to see something else they can do that.

Our family loved this comfortable and beautifully decorated beach home. We had three couples in and the children were able to sleep on the pull-out sofa bed. It accommodated our group perfectly. Each room had a TV and the family room had an enormous screen for watching movies. It is the perfect beach home with an outdoor shower for rinsing off and a garage for storing beach gear. There was a grill on the back patio and this amenity made cooking easy. The beach is pristine and great for walking and playing. The water is warm and the kids enjoyed swimming and jumping the waves. You definitely need a boogie board to surf the waves. We enjoyed the putt-putt golf course and the big playground next to it. We loved the shopping and touring in the historic part of the Island. Our kids loved driving around the island looking at wildlife and bird-watching. This is such a unique place to visit. We stayed only five days, but wished we could have stayed longer. There are several nature centers that we didn't have time to visit. The best part about the island is that we were there over the Fourth of July, but it never felt crowded or busy. I think this place is the best kept secret for families. I highly recommend Jekyll Island and this house.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We stayed here over spring break and the kids just had a ton of fun. If you like out door activities, particularly biking or kite flying, this is for you! We brought our bikes with us and there are a couple on site that can be rented for the week. There are also plenty of board games for family activities. The kitchen is stocked with most everything for cooking. This saved us a lot of money, but you have to bring your food in from off-island. Though if you like to fish, there's plenty of that available too. They have a sand-pit in the front of the house for a shell-exchange. Find shells and leave them and take others with you. Check out Driftwood Beach in the early mornings after tide goes out for awesome finds (As a nature lover, please don't take anything still alive.)! This is a wonderful and relaxing place for family vacations. The kids ask us often when we are going to go back.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
