This small home of 1400 sq ft is a three bedroom furnished cottage with two new full bathrooms and is located on 18 acres overlooking Hatch Pond, two and a half miles south of the town center of Kent, CT, 15 minutes to the Harlem Valley-Wingdale (Metro North) train station, minutes from area boarding schools and close to area ski slopes. The cottage is a perfect get away for city dwellers, parents visiting students at area schools and for those interested in getting a taste of the area before and while looking for a place to live.

The house sleeps five comfortably with one queen, one full and one twin bed. The sofa is very comfy for one, for a few nights. Six is the maximum number of guests. The washer and dryer are located in the basement. Cable television, wireless internet, a landline with free long distance and a cell tower across the pond will keep you connected to the world if you wish.

There are five other buildings on the compound that was formerly the Southern New England Ice Co. The owner uses the former bunkhouse as an antique gallery and farms a portion of the land with organic vegetables. Hatch Pond is a haven for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and bird watching. Privileges to share the boatshed located across the road are extended. Bring a kayak or canoe! Extended spring and summer guests may have a section of the vegetable garden to plant. Lots of lawn for outdoor games. Room in the garage to store bikes, skis, etc. Pick apples from the small orchard in the fall. No smoking indoors please. A nice clean well behaved dog is welcome.

My rates are listed below. They are the same all year round, no high or low season. The property is great all year round for different reasons at different seasons. No cleaning fees. No additional guest fees. Taxes are included in the stated rates. It is my preference to have guests for longer stays - monthly, seasonally. Therefore its hard for me to commit to a short stay, weekend even a week or two, sooner than 6 weeks out. I am glad to 'pencil' you in for a short stay far in advance but cannot make that a firm reservation until 6 weeks prior. Early checkin the day of your arrival and late checkout are usually not a problem - come early and stay late, make it a full vacation.

We have 2 small children and have returned to Hatch Pond several times for winter weekends and for the whole month of August summer 2010. The owner is incredibly flexible and helpful towards his guests. The house is tastefully decorated, yet comfortable and not too precious for children and the large grounds are immaculately kept. There's plenty of room to run around outside or snuggle up with a book in one of the many cozy rooms. It's warm and toasty in the winter and cool in the summer. The property feels private and secluded, though the lovely town of Kent is only 10 minutes away by car. There's a metro north train 15 minutes away, for visiting friends. The pond/lake across the road from the house is sublime. There's a private boat house with canoes and kayaks available to use and a swimming hole. The area has lots of activities for adults and/or families. There's hiking trails, restaurants, bars, waterfalls, country fairs and music festivals, an outdoor recreation area with a spring filled pool in the summer and ice skating and skiing nearby in the winter. I would highly recommend this property as a vacation rental or for the very luck as a year round rental.

We are repeat renters at this lovely home and accompanying property. Most recently we stayed during the Thanksgiving break, but we have also enjoyed staying here for a brief respite from the City during the dead of winter and the height of the summer. The house has been decorated by a discerning eye with comfort in mind. Beds and linens are very nice as are the dishes, pots and cutlery. Overall, it had a welcoming and familiar feel. We found plenty to do in all seasons . We have kayaked and swam in the lake in the summer, snow-shoed and cross-country skied on Hatch pond in the winter, and hiked and cooked feasts during the late fall. And read and relaxed every season! The nearby village of Kent is small and charming, with an excellent bakery, coffee spot and wine store. (Not to mention an exquisite Belgian Chocolatier!) The proprietor of this property is a very reliable and interesting fellow who we have found to be quite flexible and fair. - SW Family (2 adults+2 young boys)

PERFECT...PERFECT....PERFECT. We needed a place to focus so my daughter could write her college applications and so that my mother-in-law visiting from San Francisco could have a good time while she was east. This whole experience was PERFECT. The property is beautiful and totally quiet except for the sounds of nature (and an occasional train during the week). Being able to break away and go into Kent for nice dinners or any necessary shopping was ideal (literally only five minutes away). The house is beautiful and clean and VERY comfortable. It is easy to take care of and wonderful to pretend that it is yours. Wonderfully, subtly and comfortably decorated. The washing machine/dryer are great, should you choose to use them. Each room has its own charm and the bathrooms are GREAT. We loved every minute of it and cannot wait to go back. (If it is ever for sale, we would be interested.)

Our family spent a summer in Kent staying at this property and it was one of the best decisions we’ve made. First off, the inside of the house appropriately balances a country feel with comfortable amenities. There are many different parts of the house to doze off into a book or a glass of wine. The sunrise views of the lake in the morning are also very special. Outside is a very large lawn and garden were we planted vegetables, played yard games, barbecued, and kept a small pool for our youngest daughter. The apple orchard also draws a few deer so our youngest daughter really enjoyed watching them eat and frolic around. The property is also conveniently located across the street from Hatch pond so you can literally canoe, kayak or fish within two minutes. The convenience is definitely an advantage if you’re on call or have kids. And finally, the owner makes the experience very welcoming and an easy transition for anybody who isn’t “plugged in” to Kent happenings. We met so many great people while we are in Kent and would highly recommend this property for anybody

My family and I have stayed in the cottage at Hatch Pond several times--on holiday weekends, winter breaks and a month last summer. It's a great, sturdy house, perched on a hill against a beautiful forest, a big yard and sideyard (perfect for our first annual family football championship). The interior of the house was clean and well appointed, with lots of rooms to sit quietly and escape the hubbub of the house. Did I mention the pond? Clean for swimming and a great shoreline for exploring by canoe. We end up spending a lot of time on the property, but the town of Kent nearby has some great bookstores, a great fish truck for the freshest catches, and a well stocked grocery store.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: Welcome to Hatch Pond in South Kent, Connecticut. I am the property owner who lives in a home ten minutes drive from here. I consumated my love with this area nine years ago when my partner and I bought a historic house as a weekend get away from NYC. I started out coming to the area for short weekend breaks from the city. It very quickly developed into a place where I wanted to spend more and more time. I moved my antique business here (to the former bunkhouse of the winter ice workers, about a hundred yards from the cottage). I still go back and forth to the city, but Kent has become HOME.

              Why the Owner Chose Kent:
This cottage was on our scenic route to town and we always admired the property. When we discovered it for sale, we came up with a way of how to make the dream of owning it possible. I moved my business into the barn/bunkhouse (very small, appointment only antiques), renovated and furnished the cottage to rent for vacationers and began farming some vegetables.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Kent is admired for its beauty and variety. The beauty is obvious; the Housatonic River and the surrounding Litchfield Hills. The variety comes as a discovery after being here for a while. It is a community that has revealed its general openmindedness and 'live and let live' attitude. Hatch Pond unfolds itself as a place of amazing beauty and serenity yet, very close to the many ammenities of the area. The ability to walk across the road to the boatshed and take in the morning or evening calm with a cup or glass of whatever is a magical elixir - come here and relax. I think that you and yours will enjoy a stay here even for a brief time. Careful though, you may just fall in love with it yourself and find yourself looking for something a bit more permanent - nice folks, always welcome :-)
