Peaks Island house description
Custom-built in 1989 for a professional engineer and his family, this stained cedar clapboard home has high ceilings, 4 bed rooms (one on the first floor), each bedroom has with a queen bed. There are 2 full baths, a living room, library, sun room and entry gallery, and open first floor plan linking kitchen and common living areas, and several comfy couches. 2000 sq. ft. living space, a fire pit, and organic flower and herb gardens and fruit trees.
The garden kitchen has new stainless appliances, plenty of pantry space, granite tile hallway, hardwood floors, douglas fir beams and southern yellow pine extra high ceilings (9’5”) cobblestone chimney and gas fireplace. This very sturdy and energy efficient home makes a delightful center of operations for a family wedding. Yes, it is very well set up for nicely behaved dogs, and yes, help for a hostess is available.
Let us know in advance about your wedding and we'll plan the garden accordingly! Depending on when you stay, you might be enjoying peonies, lilacs, roses, lavendar, sweet peas, grapes, red raspberries, fresh lettuce etc!
We live nearby -- mostly on our boat--so we can customize your services. If you want to be left alone, you won't see us, but if you want to go for a cruise around the bay? Want us to cook your lobsters? We'll turn you into islanders, just give us a call and let us know what you need.
This house is set in a private fenced in garden in the middle of the island, at the quiet heart of island trails and recreational open-space. It is very quiet, a lovely place to have a bar-b-que or rehearsal dinner, yet only a ten minute walk to just about everything. Returning guests? We can grandfather your rate. Just ask!

- Peaks Island is a small year-round island community that is a sophisticated three miles (15 minutes) off the City of Portland, Maine and accessible by CBL ferry (go to www.cascobaylines.com for the schedule). By day, enjoy the fall foliage, or wintertime skiis along the back shore, and then take a short ferry ride in town to Portland Maine's world class dining and arts districts. Peaks Island offers the best of all worlds, in a distinctly Maine community. We are a short walk from Horse Island Camp, a ten minute walk to the boat and stores, and just ten minutes from island beaches. It takes about one hour to walk all around the island. Inside the wildlife fencing that surrounds this property you'll find (depending on the season) ripening raspberries, peaches, fresh herbs, grapes, or flowers for you to pick and enjoy. Fall foliage here is beautiful and snow can be quite spectacular! ...moreless

Very disappointed for the cost…..was looking forward to the exquisite yard and gardens. Found very unkempt, over run jungle atmosphere. All gone to waste. Inside home very strong mold smell, small refridge didn’t work, gas fireplace didn’t work, dishwasher leaks. Overall run down condition inside and out. Bedding not as advertised, kitchen lacked basics for cooking. Outdoor grill was good for a laugh.

Owner response: After you posted this review, I got a message from Leslie, and she said "Hi Jenny, I just want to say that the review from Keith of the Kindergarten reunion was not how I felt. The pictures of the house on the internet appear to be older, so what we saw for a yard in the pictures didn't match what was there (note from Jenny: lilacs don't bloom all summer, but we live closer now, so we are tending the gardens for florists again!) It was disappointing not to be able to park near the house -- it made the trek to and from the house with all our stuff difficult. (note from Jenny: we fixed that! we've landscaped the north yard so that cars can drive in through the gates without causing ruts) The kitchen does, of course, have the basics for cooking. But not for preparing a meal for 8 people. (Ask and ye shall receive! Fixed! the kitchen is FULLY stocked now!) Some of us are extreme cooks and are used to having certain utensils and cookware, and maybe we should have asked you what exactly was in the kitchen or we should have brought our own cookware. We made do. I did not notice the dishwasher leaking or any mold smell or any run down condition in the house (although the upstairs does appear to be under construction). (Note from Jenny: true, the attic was not "finished". The rest of the house, 1st and 2nd floors are finished, and so we've decided to let the attic be an attic, and not make it available to guests). The guys in our group are very aware of how to operate (and take apart and put together) a gas fireplace -- that fireplace did not work. (You're right! It wasn't working right! We ripped our hair out! And then we fixed it finally and now it's working beautifully! Thanks!) We had a fine time in your house and around the island. I'm sorry the review put on the internet was so harsh." (that's okay! we appreciate the feedback!)

Sad to leave!
Hello, sadly it's the end of our stay! There was a big storm the other night -- you'll find a large branch in the yard. Also, a family of raccoons has been feasting on the grapes. We are leaving our bags for a while, going for a swim and waiting for the boat, we'll be back to get the bags at 2. Thanks!

Wedding was amazing
Hi Jenny, We had the best weekend, the wedding was amazing. We had the rehearsal party on a cruise boat Friday and the weather, sunset and moon were incredible. The house worked out fine. I hope you will find everything in tact. Thanks again, I appreciate it and we enjoyed staying there. Mary Anne

Where kids can be kids
Thanks so much. Ruilie loves Jeanie and horse camp. And it is beautiful here! Ry has your Internet up and a neighbor boy came by to cut the grass. All is well. Ry also put in the screens that were in the mud room. We've been eating the strawberries! What a great place for a kid to just be a kid! The people of Peaks are a special, kind breed. Much of Maine uses the slogan " how life should be" I think it is more appropriate to say "the way people should be".

Year Purchased: 1989
About the owner: We built this house in 1989, and raised our children here. We also grew lots of flowers and herbs (sold organic cut flowers to mainland florists) and we also grew a lot of our own food. Now our kids are in their early 20's and we are seeking new adventures, so after 25 years on Peaks Island, we bought a farm and moved to Bowdoinham Maine in 2010. And... then we sold that and moved back onto the island, where we can keep our organic island gardens productive. We sometimes stay in the cottage near the house, but most of the summer we are living on our boat. If you need event planning or catering let us know. We're not located far away and we would be happy to help you with flowers, food, bonfire or lobster bake. Want to go for a sail? Let us know! Our son-in-law charters their boat and can take you for a ride out on the bay.
Why the Owner Chose Peaks Island:
Our big plan now is to retire onto our sailboat. We love the ocean, and also music, and gardening, so that makes Peaks Island the place to be. We do all the gardening and much of the cleaning ourselves, and after we clean and mow and garden a bit, Albert is likely to head out rowing with Jenny swimming alongside.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peaks Island is a small community. You might not know anyone, but we know practically everyone (and that's why we choose our house guests carefully). In spite of what it might look like, Peaks Island isn't a tourist town, it is a very close knit community. Even the summer people come back, year after year. The island is beautiful, great to bike and swim and sail, amazing birds, beautiful gardens, but it is the social life that makes Peaks Island special. You'll notice that islanders wave. That's real. If you slow down and say hi, they'll probably ask you if you play a musical instrument, how old your kids are and then they will tell you where the potluck and bonfire is going to be.
