  Everything was perfect. The villa itself was super quiet, yet swimming pool and tennis court just around the corner. For this reason alone our teenage boys (13 and 15) liked this place the best, compared to condo's we had before on Maui and Kauai. We all loved the space to spread out and it was the first rental in Hawaii where we did not find little critters in the house: super clean. We shopped at Costco but also made quite a few trips to Island Gourmet Market which was so close and in our opinion not expensive at all compared to prices we found in other locations. We visited Volcano and stayed there 1 night, could have easily spent 2 or more though, there was much to see and the hiking was awesome. The boys spent a morning zip lining, and I (mom) loved to explore Hawi at my own leisure without teenagers in tow. We hiked the trail down to the black beach at the Pololu Valley and drove back through Waimea: beautiful, beautiful drive. We visited Waikoloa, so glad we did not stay there, it felt dreary in the middle of nowhere. At Two Step we swam with turtles and had supper after at Bubba Gump: awesome view sitting outside and watch the boarders brave the very high waves. We have been to A-bay the first day which was nice and close by, but once we had been to Hapuna Beach we were spoiled and did not feel the need to see any other beaches. It was love at first sight: We have seen beautiful beaches on Kauai and Maui previous years, but Hapuna has it all. Great facilities, plenty of parking space, clean sand, warm water, gorgeous weather and fortunately safe swimming during our stay. The icing on the cake was the group of whales playing offshore! The last couple of days of our stay (14 in total) we spent at Hapuna, happily returned to the condo where the boys went straight for the pool while we stayed 'home' and relaxed some more. One morning we also walked the grounds of the Hilton: very happy to return to this villa away from the madness. Jim was very easy to work with and we will recommend this villa to anyone who is looking for a great base to explore the island!

  One week is not nearly enough time to see the Big Island; however, this outstanding villa is a great place to act as a hub for your Big Island vacation. This villa is described perfectly in the VRBO listing. It was super clean, in great shape, and had everything we needed. Even the wi-fi Internet access worked the first time. The owners are great, and we highly recommend this villa! Though we did much more than what we wrote below, we wanted to share a few particular tips. The villa is 30 minutes north of the Kona airport. The nearest gas station (to the Kona airport) is actually SOUTH of the airport. Remember that when you return your rental car (i.e., leave time to go back towards Kona about 7 miles to fill it up). By the way, a rental car is essential, and a 4-wheel-drive is not an unreasonable luxury. Access to a few historical sites and off-the-beaten-path beaches would be a real challenge in a sedan. Here's a tip if you plan on cooking in your villa instead of eating out the whole time. Even though you likely will be tired when you arrive, make a grocery list and try and stay awake long enough to shop at Costco (if you are a Costco member) or Walmart right after you leave the airport. Both of these stores are SOUTH of the airport; the Costco is about 5 miles south of the airport and the Walmart is about 9 miles south. Though there is a grocery store in the Waikoloa Beach Resort (called the Island Gourmet Market in the Queens' Marketplace), I suspect that even locals laugh at how ridiculous the grocery prices are there. Expect to pay 20-30% more than mainland prices for groceries at the Costco or the Walmart, as opposed to about 300% more at the Island Gourmet Market. I will say this about the Island Gourmet Market-they have high quality groceries, and if you need some mayo and forgot to pick it up when you arrived, the $4.00 for the tiny bottle of mayo is a lot cheaper than wasting your time and expensive gasoline driving back into town for it. We relaxed at two nearby beaches. The one nearest the resort is called A Bay and has coarse white sand and palm trees. The next closest beach is Hapuna-about 9 miles north of the villa. It has fine white sand and sun, a little more surf, and plenty of covered places for picnics. We spent a long day at Volcanoes Nat. Park, about 3 hours south of the villa. On the way, we visited the Punaluu black sand beach. Wish we spent more time at the Park, though. Leave before dawn, and plan to return well after dark.

  This place was beautiful! We had such a great time and Jim was great to work with. The condo had everything we needed. From all the beach gear, to tennis rackets, to laundry supplies. I would definetly reccommend this place to all my friends and family.

  We stayed at this condo for 10 days and we thought is was the best, the location is great if you want to visit the Big Island, or if you want to stay in the resort and chill at the beach or the pool. We had everything we needed, from beach towels and boogie boards, to spices and a BBQ! We were only 2 but we could easily have been many more, like 4 (or 6 if some are willing to camp in the living room!!) since there are 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The place is well isolated if you want privacy and very close to the pool and tennis court. This condo is clean and very well kept, from the linen to the cupboards. This was, without a doubt, our best holiday ever! We felt at home the very minute we stepped in and we will definitely come back! Jozie

  this big island condo is located central to all the great beaches/snorkeling/restaurants/dolphins/turtles/ fish, and goats, yes wiild goats roam the island. all beach supplies are already at the condo, as well as the tennis racquets/balls we used at the court right across the street. this condo was very clean, comfortable and had great air-conditioning. no sacrifices here.

  My husband and I stayed in this unit for a wk in September. We had the most amazing stay. The unit was sparkling clean, enormous, and had everything we could possibly need to enjoy our stay. Waikoloa Beach resort area is so much nicer than any of the other areas we visited. It's a private community that's brand new and very luxurious. This unit is minutes away from Hapuna and Mauna Kea beaches which are the nicest on the island. The owner has nice beach towels, boogie boards, snorkel gear, coolers, beach chairs, umbrellas....you name it. I'd like to say that everything in the unit was not the standard junk most people use. I actually felt like I was at home. The owner was so helpful during our stay. He and his wife own several properties in the area so if this is booked do ask him about staying in one of the others. The rates can't be beat. For the price of a nice dinner you are getting a full townhouse. I don't know how they do it! Overall the best stay. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who is looking. Do yourself a favor and stay in this area. It's so much nicer than the rest of the island.   We ( 2 teenager girsl and I ) spent 4 weeks on 4 islands, and this house was by far the best of all our accomondations! Also that island - together with Kaui - is the one we liked most! It is really a luxury Villa in a luxury resort! The price is unbeatable! The description on VRBO is accurate ...the reality is even better! The contact with the owner Jim was excellent. We spent several afternoons at the pool , very clean and big and relaxing..! We even preferred the pool to the beaches! Big Island is a very interesting place, I would recommend a helicopter tour to the vulcano, a trip to Hilo and a visit of the vulc. national park! We also visited Puuhonua o Honaunau and made a round trip through the island, which takes about 5 to 6 hours...If we have the chance, we will certainly return one day and hope to stay in this awesome villa again!! Mahalo!

  We just returned from a wonderful week long stay on the Big Island. The condo was everything that was described and more! Very clean, very well stocked with beach supplies, and in a great location. It was amazingly simple to work with Jim for the booking, and he took care of everything we needed in a very prompt and efficient manner. We saved Hapuna beach for the tail end of our trip (after driving all around the island to different sights and to the volcanoes) and spent the last 2 days there boogie boarding and building sand castles. In addition to all the sights everyone else has mentioned, we also found Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory just north of Hapuna where they give you lots and lots of samples of everything they sell - from spam macadamia nuts to coconut macadamia nut brittle to macadamia nut popcorn...and even coffee. There is a self-guided tour (really just a hallway with big windows so you can see the workers on the machines) with some signs to read. The kids got a kick out of cracking their own macadamia nuts. All in all, we could not have been happier with our stay and are so glad we found this gem of a condo. Thanks, Jim!

  Our family just returned from 4 weeks (July 2012) at Jim's very comfortable and large townhouse at the Colony Villas. I would not hesitate to recommend this unit: its proximity to the family pool is amazing, the size/set-up is very comfortable and convenient for parents and children (aged 6 & 8), and dealing with Jim was a pleasure. Before arriving, all my questions were answered promptly, the booking procedure was easy and streamlined, and the unit was very clean. South Kohala is amazing, with so many gorgeous beaches to choose from - our favourite was Waialea Beach near Puako (shade!!!). Check out the Blue Dragon 10 minutes north in Kawaihae - a fab restaurant with amazing drinks. Kohala Burger and Taco in Kawaihae is a good, although not cheap, place for yummy burgers and Mexican food. My brother tried the Lava Lava Beach Club and said the food was not good, but the drinks and location were nice (right on A-Bay). Hapuna and Mauna Kea are excellent beaches, but A-Bay, in our opinion, was overrated. Food in Hawaii is expensive, so we'd recommend going to Costco in North Kona; we were really pleased to see a lot of local products there. We had a wonderful vacation, and it was difficult to return to real life after a great month at Jim's townhouse.

  Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.

  We stayed for 24 days and did not want to come home. The condo was wonderful! Very clean and everything was there that you needed. We spent the first 2 weeks driving around the Island. The volcano was just steaming and the weather wasn't very good but what a fascinating sight. We were concerned when we landed and saw all the black lava but the Island is very beautiful. My husband enjoyed the snorkeling in the area. We saw a number of the turtles resting and swimming. The area around the condo was fun to explore. The Hilton is amazing to see. We spent several days at A'Bay beach, Kua beach, Beach 69 and the Mauna Kea. For Mauna Kea beach you need to be there no later than 9am to receive a parking pass. It is a beautiful beach. We are definitely returning. Jim was in contact with us whenever we needed to be. We have recommended this property to our friends.
