My wife and I visited the Whaley House along with 13 friends for the annual spring pompano run. The house is remarkable in every way. Even with 15 of us in the house, none of us ever felt crowded; there is plenty of room for privacy, but there are also great areas for gathering as a group. We were especially grateful for the massive, well-equipped kitchen as we were cooking fish or some other seafood almost every night. We could not have without the ground-level refrigerator and freezer as we needed room for all the ice we used, bait, and overflow groceries. The ground-level half-bath allowed us take care of business without tracking sand into the house and the stench of fish and bait into the house! The fishing right in front of the house was OUTSTANDING. We stopped counting the number of fish we caught/kept at about 400 and that doesn't even include all the throwbacks. Fish caught included whiting, pompano (about 40-50), sea trout, black drum (largest was 36" and 28 lbs), sheepshead, sand trout, catfish, stingrays, two 7' dusky sharks (250 lbs., and 275 lbs) , a 5' spinner shark (100 lbs.), one tarpon, and one cobia. We caught so many fish that we actually got tired of catching! On our past trips to SGI we have always gone to the point in the park or to the jetties, but there was no need to do that because of the perfect beach and water conditions right in front of the house. If you're a fisherman/fisherwoman, this is the place to go. Many thanks to our hostessfor making this the most memorable (and comfortable) fishing trip I have ever been on, and everyone else in my group feels the same way. It was also great to meet our host's brother and his wife who were staying in the house next door and were extremely friendly and gracious. They even took on the task of taking our group pictures. I've already started putting our group together for next year. All the years I've spent looking for "beach heaven" are over because I found the Whaley House!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I have had an opportunity to see some of your vacation photos and it seems your group fully experienced what The Whaley House is all about; having a rich experience spending time with friends and loved ones doing your favorite activities at the beach!

Several couples of the Florida Surf Casters club recently, 4/2013, had an awesome week of fun in the sun! The house and grounds were as promised. We just loved having a cup of coffee on the deck watching the sun come up out of the Gulf. Then just walking down on the beach and fishing. We caught Pompano, Trout, Whiting, Black Drum, Redfish, Ladyfish, and Sheepshead without losing sight of the impressive Whaley House! In the magnificent well equiped kitchen we prepared Sheepshead Stew, Broiled Pompano, and fried Whiting. The Kitchen/Greatroom was also the focal point for other meals and great social time with the other couples. We are already talking about booking our trip for next year and we've only been home for one week! If your thinking about going quit debating because you won't be disappointed!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: We hope to see your group return soon!!

We had 6 weeks to plan a destination wedding and the Whaley House was everything and much more than we could have ever imagined for a location. The owner went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. She was so easy to do business with and helped with everything we needed. The house is a PERFECT venue for any celebration. The home is comfortable, very tastefully decorated, well maintained and the view is stunning. I highly recommend this place and we are planning a reunion with the happy couple and new relatives in the years to come. You won't be disappointed with this property.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

For my husband's 70the birthday, we rented the top floor of the Whaley House where we entertained over 70 of our friends. The house, with its large great room and numerous decks allowed everyone to mingle freely. The oversized kitchen with access to the elevator made it easy for our caterer to bring in and prepare the food. The cooperation of the owners and their staff allowed us to enjoy a lovely, stress-free event.Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: What a perfect use for the top level of The Whaley House. I am so glad you approached us with your request to have your husband's 70th birthday celebration at our home! I hope to have more events at The Whaley House in the future!

We just spent a wonderful three day wedding weekend at The Whaley House. We were married on Saturday in a private family ceremony on the east end of the island. The house is very large, extremely well appointed and easily accomodated our family that traveled here for our wedding. The master suite was a honeymooner's paradise with a huge, beautiful bathroom. The house is beautifully decorated and was very clean. The kitchen was perfect for all of the food prep that was needed for our family reception and we were pleasantly surprised at how well equipped the kichen was. We had 22 family members stay in the house and 52 guests for the actual reception on Saturday. There are great decks for guests to mingle. We served fresh oysters out on the deck. The guests were asked to dress in "beach casual" and bring their swimsuits. After the cake cutting, most of the guests enjoyed playing on the beach. We loved the house and plan to have family reunions there for years.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We are thrilled The Whaley House met all of your needs and expectations! We look forward to your family returning for years to come. Congrats to the wedding couple!

What a place. Bring your Jimmy Buffett C.D.s and listen to the music and the waves on one of the huge decks this home has. The Whaley House is a little piece of Heaven on earth If the beach were any closer your feet would get wet when you got out of bed in the morning. Don't miss this one. Our whole family of passive males and hard to please females loved every minute of the Whaley House and will visit again, hopefully in the near future.Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Wow! Thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. I love the image of if the beach were any closer your feet would get wet when you got out of bed in the morning! That is priceless!! 2012 is almost booked! We are already booking 2013 summer vacations! We would love to have your family return anytime your plans allow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I've never written a review on any vacation before, but so much enjoyed our time at the Whaley House that we wanted to extend our gratitude to the owners/hosts! We played all week with our family and 3 others, and the house offered everything we needed. Of course, we brought along some of our own essentials -- sand toys, beach volleyball set, horseshoes, basketball goal, Xbox, and even some Luau party supplies, and we'd recommend other families do the same, but the house is so spacious it accommodated all of us and our toys quite nicely! Great place to get away with a fantastic beach!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: This warms our heart to share our home with yet another perfect group of renters that came, relaxed, played, connected with one another and found this beach house to be quite simply, the perfect vacation destination.

Beautiful and Historic Apalachicola View on map
Apalachicola or “Apalach“, as it is known by locals, is far from a typical tourist town. Established in 1831, it was once the third largest port on the Gulf of Mexico. Wide, tree lined streets are still graced by picturesque homes from the nineteenth and twentieth century that show the wealth and craftsmanship of its early days. Apalachicola has over 900 historic homes and buildings listed in its extensive National Register District and it was selected as one of the nation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2008 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Apalachicola is situated on the Apalachicola River and Bay. This basin encompasses what is considered one of the least polluted, most undeveloped, ecologically diverse

St George Island Lighthouse View on map
On Friday, October 21, 2005, the Cape St. George Light collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico. On Monday, December 1, 2008, the reconstructed lighthouse was opened to the public. Built in 1852 on what is now Little St. George Island, the Light finally succumbed to beach erosion and pounding waves. Working with state and federal government support, the St. George Lighthouse Association spearheaded the effort to salvage the pieces of the Light. Volunteers cleaned the mortar off thousands of the old bricks. The original plans were obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the lighthouse was reconstructed on St. George Island, using as much of the original materials as possible.
