Situated on a quiet street, conveniently located near the ski slopes and hiking trails, the Stowe Chalet can provide each visitor a place to wind down after a long Alaskan day of adventure and experience. The Stowe is a spacious, open environment with large windows facing the Alyeska Ski Resort and adjoining Max’s Mountain, and is nestled among the quieter neighborhoods within the small town of Girdwood. Its two floors provide ample space for spreading out and relaxing for the entire family, with plenty of privacy for the intimate travelers. When visiting Alaska, you needn’t leave the comforts of home behind, the Stowe embraces all the aspects that make a house into a home. Cleanliness, spaciousness and the plush softness of the beds will keep your inner fire burning while you explore and engage in the wilderness of Alaska.
Girdwood is located 36 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city. Within its glacially-carved walls you will find opportunities to view wildlife, hike alpine meadows, dine on local delights, ski deep powder, pan yourself a golden fortune and so much more. With the Kenai Peninsula and Turnagain Pass a short 20-mile drive along one of America’s Scenic Byways (Seward Highway), you will have the chance to view Bald Eagles, endangered Beluga Whales, random Harbor Seals, larger-than-expected Moose and the occasional Black and Brown Bear. Locally, there is access to Sockeye (Red), Coho (Silver), or Chinook (King) Salmon fisheries - and the world-famous Kenai River is a beautiful 1.5 hour drive from the doorstep. Guided fishing, hiking and all-around adventure tours can be placed with local Girdwood tour guides. In addition, the Crow Creek Mine area can provide hours of investigative gold panning options, all while learning about the history of Girdwood and how it came to exist. Take a hike on the subtemperate rainforest Iditarod National Historic Trail, or forage for blueberries, fungi or other wild edibles right out the front door. Girdwood places you in the middle of Alaska’s action, and the Stowe provides you the luxury of comfort in the heart of the wild.
The Stowe’s caretaker, son of the owner, has lived and played in Girdwood for the past 14 years. An avid outdoorsmen and full-time Chugach National Forest Service employee, he is happy to share his knowledge or point you in the right direction to make your Alaska vacation a true success.

I am finally getting around to post this review. My extended family and I stayed at this house in Girdwood for two nights in June 2012. We had an exceptional stay. I traveled with my mother, my aunt, and my two young counsins (17 and 13). The house was absolutely perfect for us. So comfortable with spectacular views and plenty of space for all of us to spread out. We cooked fresh fish for dinner one night and breakfast both mornings and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. The bedrooms were well furnished and we slept really well. The living room, where we spent most of our time was homey and really comfy...very condusive to conversation, games, and of course the young cousins appreciated the TV. I am so glad that I decided to rent this place rather than checking into some hotel in Anchorage (which was my first thought). For the five of us, the hotel stay would have been so much more expensive AND not nearly as nice. Plus I'm not sure we would have made it south to Seward and would likely have missed the spectacular drive. The owner Donna and her son, who lives locally in Girdwood and manages the property, were very responsive to our questions and called to make sure we were comfortable after we arrived. Very highly recommended.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We stayed at the Stowe Chalet for eight nights in mid-June 2012. The place was far more comfortable than even the photos had indicated and turned out to be perfect for our blended family (myself and my husband, and his son and his family all shared the space.) Our family included a 5-year-old who had the ability to either sleep with his parents in a separate bed in one of the master BRs, or in a bunk bed, so there were several options. The kitchen was better stocked than we could have imagined and we truly had everything we needed. There was even a fax machine! We spent most of our time in Alaska visiting other family members and exploring, but there were still several hours of most days that we all just hung out and enjoyed ourselves at the Chalet. In summary, the place was clean, spacious, and extremely comfortable. A pleasant surprise was how close it is to Anchorage. We flew into the Anchorage airport very late and even so, the drive along Turnagain Arm is so gorgeous that the 45 minutes flies by. The peacefulness of Girdwood and its proximity to Seward, Exit Glacier, etc. made us think we may want to stay there in the future as well. We appreciate the owners and their good communication; we were at ease and things couldn't have gone more smoothly. We highly recommend a stay at the Stowe Chalet!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

About the owner: Donna Garland lives and plays in Sheridan, Wyoming, near her two grandchildren and daughter's family. When the need to fill the freezer with wild salmon or halibut comes along, she comes up north to visit her son, a resident of Girdwood for 14 years. Together, they have skied, hiked, fished and seen just about everything SouthCentral Alaska has to offer.
Why the Owner Chose Girdwood:
Ms. Garland bought the home as an investment opportunity and as her own personal space to escape to when Wyoming's summers got to blazing.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Ms Garland enjoys floating down the river with her friends, seeing the bright Alaskan summer sun and dining at Girdwood's many diverse restaurants while she is visiting.
