A Favorite Beach House for Years for Lucky Families

Four generations of the island-based Black family have owned and loved this special oasis by the sea, presided over by the oldest and largest banyan tree in Puako. The family’s handiwork is present in the ocean-side groves of coconut palms soaring 15 to 35 feet high: on the right are palms named and planted by individual family members, many as young children, or in honor of special friends; on the left, special events are marked by a separate grove. Together, the palms frame sunsets and the neighboring island of Maui, dominated by the 10,000-foot-high mountain of Haleakala.
The property was chosen by the family matriarch in the early 1950s for its location along some of the best tidal pools in Puako, where children can swim, fish and play, protected by a perimeter of ancient lava flows. The adjacent “Big Rock” rises above the pools, setting the stage for social gatherings and sunset watching. Turtles come to call daily, feeding on the seaweed at the Big Rock’s edge. In the winter, humpback whales pass by, 100-plus yards offshore, cavorting with their young. With the constant sea breezes, the rustling coconut palms and waves provide a natural rhythm of music to this idyllic setting.

This is a wonderful property, with EVERYTHING you could ever want or need! 2 Papayas manages this property very well, to include a stunning tropical arrangement, fresh papayas, cold drinks, and a cold washcloth on arrival! They are also there to answer and assist with any questions or concerns. This is the 2nd consecutive year that we have rented this exquisite property, and hope to be able to return next year. I like the fact that there is salt, pepper, and other spices, and dry goods that previous renters have used. Da Fish House for fresh fish is great, as well as Greg Kaufman's boat out of Kohala Dive Shop (because he lets you keep your fish!). The general store has (surprisingly) good fresh produce, a paperback book swap library, and also sells beer, etc. The house is great for 2 couples...even though it is a 3 bathroom house...the "day bed" in the living room is in view of anyone downstairs. If I had a 3rd couple, I would suggest renting the tree house, also on the property. The washer and dryer is a great convenience. The sunsets and sound of the surf from this rental is great! Lots of room for shade or sun, and the whale watching, petroglyphs, and beach walking are an added bonus. While I like to share positive experiences with potential renters, I just hope the house is available the next time we want to rent this awesome property!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

This was our fourth stay on the Big Island, and this house was by far the best we have rented. It is simply perfect: it is very well maintained, very clean, very private, and is an ideal setting for people who want to relax, read and enjoy the spectacle of nature (tides coming in and out) from their breakfast table. It's also perfect for those who like to walk as you can walk all the way to Hapuna Beach via the quiet Road, or on the other side to Mauna Lani. Personally, I just could not make myself leave for very long as I knew how special this house was. Nothing beats the illusion that the tide pool in front of the house is yours, and my daughter actually called it "her" swimming-pool. Puako is a special place on the island, and we hope we can rent this perfect house again. It's simply idyllic.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

I miss this place so much! We are already making plans to come back. The snorkeling is amazing with turtles every day. I also saw a bat ray and a spotted eagle ray this year! Spinner dolphins came by one day. The house is so comfortable. We spent so much time on the lanai just reading, eating, and lounging with the constant breeze and sounds of the wind and ocean to soothe us. The hospitality of Robbie, Mary, and their friend Holly was unmatched.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

My wife and I hugely enjoyed our week here: the best ocean vista on Puako Road with tide pools at your feet and views toward Kawaihae and even Maui (in the distance) framed by bending palms. Meals on the lanai; efficient and well equipped kitchen; handsome simple Hawaiian decor; clean and well-maintained property; open indoor-outdoor living; lovely upstairs house-wide balcony off the two bedrooms to catch the breeze and enjoy watery sunsets. It's just what a beach house should be and feels well loved by the family that owns it. Super snorkeling just a mile away at the incomparable Wailea Bay Beach (south of Hapuna Beach) -- go early on weekday mornings for calm water and to avoid crowds on weekends. A good farmer's market up the mountain in Kamuela-Waimea for local produce and delicacies like poha berry jam ( a favorite). We're already nostalgic for Banyan Tree and still going through withdrawal...In short: highly recommended!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+.

We had a dream vacation at this lovely house in a terrific, ocean front setting. From the outset, working with 2 Papayas LLC to make arrangements was easy. We felt very cared for. They were flexible, warm, professional--just a delight. The house is beautiful, clean and well-maintained, and very inviting. Being right on the ocean is just plain magical. Beautiful. Moreover, just put on your flippers, mask, and snorkel, swim out 2 or 3 minutes, and there you are at a beautiful canyon with gorgeous fish. Go left, follow the canyon parallel to the shore, and then go in at the beach at the end of Puako road. A three minute walk home--wow! For scuba diving, Kona Diving Company is fantastic. Friendly and very good at spotting all sorts of undersea life. We even got to see Laverne, a very big and very well fed tiger shark. My one reservation in writing this review is that this house is so terrific that when we wish to go again, there will be no openings available. So, please don't tell all your friends, just your best friends. And do go through 2 Papayas LLC. They are GREAT!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

My family and I went to the Big Island to celebrate Thanksgiving and my 70th birthday. We visited from Nov 21 through Dec 1. It was one of the best vacations we have had. This home was a wonderful place to stay as it was very clean and stocked with everything you could possible need. I would highly recommend it to any of my friends and family. The location was wonderful with beautiful tide pools and many fish and turtles. It feels very safe and private. I slept on the lanai and was very comfortable. Robbi and Mary were very helpful and met all of our needs and very pleasant to deal with. I would certainly consider going back to this same home.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

This beautiful little home is absolutely as advertised. Restful, peaceful, quiet except for the sound of the waves to put you to sleep at night. Amazing sunsets. And, of course, Stanley and his ten or twelve friends sunning on the rocks in and around the tidepools a few doors down. Our daughter named all of the sea turtles who frequented the shoreline and identified them by markings and locales!!! Often we went up the coast to the local fish market and bought the catch of the day for a nighttime BBQ... better than any of the restaurants. But, you do have to try the Blue Dragon!! A couple of comments... it was August and it was hot. The house does not have A/C, but several fans up and downstairs. And, there is not a sandy beach right out front, but that did not particularly bother us. Just a heads up -- if you are looking for a hotel beach, go to a hotel -- if you are looking for privacy and peace, this is the place.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, age 55+, sightseeing.

Spent a few night here and loved it. Very relaxing, awesome views, great to sleep with the sound of the ocean. Place has everything! We cooked in some and even used the grill. You can also walk to nearby restaurant -- The Orchid along the beach. Just don't forget a flashlight. Stars are amazing. Also fun snorkeling and lots of turtles.Owner response: Puako is well known for the sea turtle population. Most mornings and evenings they can be found feeding and sunbathing on the shoreline.
