Captiva Island house description
Danny Morgan islander ballader, wrote in the late seventies about Captiva Island, 'The Island of My Dreams.' He sang of the island's beauty and our home was built to forever portray that beauty. Some call it, 'The Old Key West House' and some younger folks call it 'The Tree House', but whatever you call it,you will love being nestled in the natural lush vegatation like a tropical rain forest. The house has many special architectural features like an English antique stain glass front door, a hand carved veranda from a victorian home in Chicago inverted over the bar, and antique furniture throughout. This home has a lovely contrast to the typical Florida decor.
Captiva has miles of luxurious award winning sandy beaches, pristine waters, unprecedented shell hunting opportunites, a charming village with resturants & live music, shopping, and it is all within walking distance of a picturesque, unforgetable sunset.
Our home is only steps away from the beach, a two minute walk by the historical cemetery and the Chapel By the Sea. Watch a beautiful sunset, walk to the Mucky Duck for dinner or come home and enjoy one of the more tranquil parts of Captiva

WOW!!Guest comment entered by owner
Dear Kathy, We arrived back in the UK yesterday after a meandering return to Houston. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your home on Captiva. My daughter's initial reaction, indeed one shared by all of us, was WOW! Never before have we stayed in a holiday rental which felt so much like a home. That meant that we were happy to spend time on both the beach and in the property. As a result, we've returned back from our holidays feeling truly rested. Last night I found my husband on Google Earth looking at images of the beach and the house and my daughter looking back through her photos. I think it is safe to say that you can expect a booking from us again in the future. I wish you and your husband the very best.

Wonderful time in spite of rain!
Thanks for the email. We had a wonderful time. One of our most relaxing vacations in a very long time. The rain was persistent throughout the week, but, it did not dampen (no pun intended) our stay. I foresee future family trips to Captiva and I will certainly check availability at the Gingerbread house. Thanks again,

The Gingerbread House is the perfect home for a family like us. Cozy, romantic and very close to the beach. The boys were happy playing with the many coconuts they had found in the garden while us parents enjoyed the screened front porch reading a book in the rocking chair! If shopping and nightlife activities are not on top of your priority list but remoteness , bird watching, boating and shelling are, then you are definitly in the right place on Captiva Island. We have fallen in love with this place and this house and will come back as soon as possible!

Owner response: Thank you for your time in reviewing our home.
Gingerbread House was great!
Gingerbread House was great!
The house was just as described. Charming with a large screened front porch where we spent a lot of time. House is well maintained, tastefully decorated with many antiques and very clean. Great location. Property is surrounded with beautiful trees and plants that provides a lot of privacy. Just a little further down the road was a whole district of restaurants and little shops that we didn't discover until the end of our trip. Best thing about the house: Quiet, away from the grounds on Sanibel and just about everything else. Owner answered emails quickly and courteously. Not so great: restaurants on both islands are very expensive. Had to wash the linens when we left which means we had to get up at 5:00 am to get that done before we left for the airport. Overall, would love to stay here again and again.

Owner response: The lslands could use a laundry service for sure!!!! Since Saturday is the turnover day for rentals on Captiva, guests washing linens prior to departure makes it possible to have a clean house. We agree that most restaurants need a chefs touch. Thank you for taking the time to comment on our home.

The area is a real gem
Hello Kathy, thank you very much for allowing us to stay in your home. We and our children enjoyed it a lot. It so beautifully green around the house. Our daughter loved to play around the house and to watch the geckos. Also the beach is so peaceful. The whole area is a real gem. Too bad there is this red tide problem. At the end there was a lot of dead fish at the beach. Anyway, we were very happy with our stay and thank you again for your help! Magdalena

Owner response: I went to the rain forest in Panama with hopes of hearing and seeing many birds. Honestly, you will hear more in the morning hours being on the beautiful island of Captiva. It is the subtropics with the ocean breezes in the summer, and beautiful vegatation in the winter.

I have been to the Gingerbread house three times now. What a great place. The house is beautiful on the inside and very clean and kept up. It is very close to the beach, literally less than a five minute walk. The house is surrounded by vegetation which makes it very very private which is a big plus. The owner was very helpful in answering my questions regarding the property. island is beautiful, everyone is very friendly. If you want a great house, beautiful inside and out then you should stay here. I can't wait to go back!

Hello Kathy, I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you that we really enjoyed staying at your rental in Captiva Island. Your home is beautiful. We loved all the antiques and decor in the house. Most of all the dining room table where we put together a 1000 piece puzzle in the evenings. The landscaping around the house is amazing!!! We did in fact fell like we were in a treehouse. It was a lovely stay on a lovely island. Thank You

About the owner: My husband has been a college professor for over 40 years. His career began at Cornell University and he has been traveling south every since which is why we now reside in Nashville, TN and we built our home on Captiva Island. My husband's hobby or passion, whatever you want to call it,is restoring antique automobiles. The love and the details of restoring a vauable antique is reflected throughout our home in the hand carved gingerbread on the veranada and the selection of architectural pieces used in the construction of the home. My career for the past 25 years has been in real estate managaing our property in Nashville, Alligator Point and now our home on Captiva. My hobby is moving plants from one spot to another...never would I describe myself as a gardner but my love for vegatation is reflected in the surroundings of our home. We are one of the few on Captiva that has maintained the orginial lush, tropical vegagtion. Our home is not like so many of the cookie cutter mansions you will see. It is a reflection of our love for the purest of designs and 2 years of labor reflecting alot about who we are.
Why the Owner Chose Captiva Island:
Wiles and Gore is near the down town area, The Village, but one of the more peaceful streets. Our home is surrounded by original tropical trees and plants.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We built the house with architectural antiques that make this home different than most Floridian homes adding warmth that only antiques can give.
