Mission Hills guest house description
Quinn Cottage San Diego
A Charming Garden Retreat
Our Quinn Cottage San Diego is a lovely, private retreat found on perhaps the most exclusive cul de sac street in the historic and affluent neighborhood of Mission Hills. Surrounded by breathtaking gardens with a nice deck offering stunning canyon and ocean views, Quinn Cottage encompasses the entire garden level of the main home and is completely separate and private. Even its lovely garden entrance is secluded from the main home and neighbors. Easy on-street parking is always available in our quiet residential area. The location is within walking distance to the Mission Hills village with coffee houses, restaurants, shops, parks, and the famous Old Town area of San Diego with its many attractions as well as central trolley station. Casual strolling or energetic jogging through our historic neighborhood is exciting in itself with its 19th Century mansions, classic Spanish haciendas, and early 1900 California bungalows. It is a paradise for the architecture or history buff as well as anyone who loves heritage houses.
This light, airy, newly remodeled retreat has an open living room, dining area, and kitchen with a plentitude of garden and canyon view windows. It is completely furnished with all the details of an inviting, cozy family getaway spot. Every room has large, sunny, garden view windows and many “European B&B” touches. The two bedrooms, one with a pillow top king bed and one with a trundle bed that serves as two singles or one king, have beautiful pillows and spreads, cozy comforters, and high quality bedding and linens. We also have a Pac’n Play, Bumbo, booster seat, and toys available for our rental guests with babies or toddlers.
The colorful, happy kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, dining, and entertaining with lovely dishes, table ware, bar ware, and linens. Even the gourmet cook will find the necessary appliances, cookware, bake ware, and utensils for any special meal or recipe. The pantry/laundry room has a washer and dryer, cleaning and laundry supplies, plenty of storage space, and a “beach kit” of picnic ware, beach chairs/towels/umbrellas, various sizes of coolers, boogie boards, a Frisbee, and sand toys. The pantry shelves are amply stocked with herbs, spices, oils, sugar, flour, coffee, tea, and much more for rental guests to enjoy. A gas barbeque is just outside the kitchen door in a lovely garden setting with table and chairs for outdoor dining or relaxing.
Quinn Cottage shares with the main house a spectacular deck with a large hot tub, cozy towels, its own dining table, and spectacular views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma, and the surroundings canyons. Visitors often view soaring hawks and many other bird species from the deck’s “tree house” location. Kids enjoy using the hot tub as a pool for playtime while adults savor sitting in the hot tub with a glass of wine or cup of tea to relax and rejuvenate. Enjoying a romantic candlelight dinner on the deck as you watch the sun set over the ocean is a total escape in itself. After dark, owls can be heard softly calling to one another from the nearby canyon’s Eucalyptus trees. The solitude is delicious. To add some romance and celebration, for much of the year rental guests can view the distant sky filled with Sea World fireworks, all from a cozy deck chair or the hot tub.
Gardening is our passion and hobby, and our large gardens, a Certified Wildlife Habitat, are well-known to the neighborhood. Enchanting the visitor with many secret “rooms” to explore and delight, the garden has whimsical pieces of “exterior art” as well as numerous spots to sit with a morning cup of coffee to watch the many hummingbirds, finches, and butterflies that inhabit the lush landscape. The tranquil surroundings include year round herb, vegetable, and salad gardens as well as numerous fruit and citrus trees. Many varieties of roses and other flowers bloom during all seasons. We enjoy sharing our garden’s vegetable and floral bounty with our rental guests.
Other amenities of this inviting retreat include family games, a library of adult and children’s books, magazines, movies, music, flat screened TV, DVD, an Ipod dock, wireless broadband internet, and maps and information for the San Diego visitor. We are life-long San Diego natives who enjoy helping our rental guests make the most of their visit, offering many ideas that create an experience beyond the usual. We pride ourselves in our hospitality, our respect for your complete privacy, and the pristine condition of this charming spot. You will feel very well taken care of at Quinn Cottage.
Located just above Old Town and Presidio Park, Quinn Cottage is only five to ten minutes from the airport, Little Italy, Downtown and the Gaslamp District, the famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Sea World, Petco Park, the harbor, Fashion and Mission Valley shopping centers and golf course, and many beaches. It is just two minutes from freeways 5 and 8 for quick jaunts to La Jolla, Del Mar Racetrack, Torrey Pines golf course, Legoland, Wild Animal Park, and other north county locations. The border crossing into Mexico is only twenty minutes away. As already mentioned, many places of interest are within easy walking distance. The location could not be more perfect.
We welcome children and families in this non-smoking environment. Email (best option) or call us with requests for additional photos and any questions so we can help you begin planning your wonderful Quinn Cottage San Diego getaway. We also invite you to check out our other remarkable vacation properties: Pine Street Retreat, which is # 446156 at vrbo or #446156vb at homeaway and Quinn Cottage Orcas Island the San Juan Islands, which is #55482 at vrbo or #177374 at homeaway.

A Very Special Place
A Very Special Place
We stayed at Quinn Cottage for only 3 nights and wished it could've been longer. We were looking for a central location so that we could explore the San Diego area and were not disappointed. Mary was tremendously helpful prior to and upon our arrival. Communication through emails/texts was timely and informative. The cottage itself is quaint, comfortable and fully stocked (the pictures don't do it justice)! The gardens are amazing and we had a lot of fun photographing the flowers and various garden nooks and crannies. We were able to enjoy Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Old Town San Diego, Coronado Island, Balboa Park, the Farmers Market in Old Town, The San Diego Safari Park and the Mission Hills area of San DIego (on foot and by car). We ate at Cafe Coyote in Old Town and Cucina Urbana in Mission Hills and really liked both restaurants. The location is easily accessible to all of these areas. We would highly recommend Quinn Cottage (and can't wait to return)!

If you are looking for a quaint cottage overlooking the coast this is the place. We took the amtrak train in to Old Town San Diego and the cottage was an $8.00 cab drive up the hill and it was amazing. The cottage had everything we needed plus recommended sights and tourist attractions. The owners were very polite and the gardens were also very nice to wake up to. We hiked down the hill each day to catch the trolley to everywhere and the daily walk was so nice we refused to call a cab. If you like a view, and even a hike or two, plus a small pitching wedge golf course this is the perfect place. Thanks for a great trip. Heather & Ray

Highly Recommended Mission Hills Garden Retreat
Highly Recommended Mission Hills Garden Retreat
After 40 years of staying with family, friends and in hotels when visiting San Diego, we elected to stay at Quinn Cottage for 7 nights at relatively short notice to attend a family wedding. It is everything that Mary and Jeff and other visitors say it is. The listing was very accurate, for which we were thankful. We were drawn to the promise of a well-supplied kitchen (even if we didn't do much more than cook breakfast), a washer/dryer with detergent supplied (we had everything in carry-on luggage including our clothes/shoes for the wedding so we planned to do some wash), a king-size bed with nightstands and lamps, and comfortable living room furniture. As it turned out, there was excellent lighting throughout the cottage and the couch was extremely comfortable both for sitting and for an insomniac up reading in the middle of the night (good lighting again). Mary was always very responsive to our inquiries - the initial ones about dates and rates as well as follow up ones during our stay. She takes delight and pride in the property and provided helpful information about the neighborhood and San Diego. Quinn Cottage offered us many comforts and conveniences - leisurely morning coffee on the deck with beautiful views from Point Loma up to La Jolla (we did have some great weather), an extremely comfortable bed for sleeping late if we wanted, nice strolls through the neighborhood to Espresso Mio or through the "secret" gate to the Presidio, easy access to I-5, I-15 and I-8 to drive to family, close to the airport, lovely gardens to enjoy, etc. If Jeff and Mary are in the main house, they do not use the "shared" deck so it seems like it is just yours; if they are renting out Pine St Retreat, those guests can use both a separate private deck and the shared deck. But there are also many places to sit in the gardens. We would recommend this property to anyone. It is perfect for a couple - or perhaps a couple with younger children - the single bathroom might be cramped for larger groups (but the upstairs Pine St Retreat has 2 bathrooms). In fact, we liked it so much that we hope to return next winter for a longer stay and have our bicycles and golf clubs with us. All things considered, this is truly one of the nicest vrbo's that we have stayed in (9 in the last 2 years).

San Diego At Its Best
San Diego At Its Best
This cottage is very comfortable and spacious. The owners have anticipated every need. They answered our initial inquiry promptly and the booking process was clear and quick. We were met on arrival. All aspects of the cottage were explained. They were respectful of our privacy but available at all times to answer any questions. We enjoyed being in a residential neighbourhood and filled every day with travels. The property is a 20 minute walk from the Old Town Transit Centre. From there, we went on trolleys, buses and the Coaster to Balboa Park for the organ concert and all the gardens, Coronado to see the old hotel and ride the ferry, La Jolla for the scenery and the sea lions, Oceanside for the pier and the surfers, Mission Beach to see the old roller coaster, Fashion Valley Mall, the Saturday market in Little Italy and Hillcrest for the movies. We would recommend Quinn Cottage to anyone.

Fantastic! Our home away from home when in San Diego
Fantastic! Our home away from home when in San Diego
I cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay at Quinn Cottage, starting with our arrival at an incredibly comfortable, tasteful and well appointed home with a secluded and serene garden for guests to enjoy. Mary and Jeff were lovely and warm hosts, and are so thoughtful, astutely attending to every detail of what a visitor would need, including a useful handwritten tourist guide to San Diego and lots of other things. The cottage is in a great location, within walking distance to the cute downtown Mission Hills, as well as Old Town and the neighborhood itself has lovely views and charming homes.I highly recommend Quinn Cottage and can't wait to come back to San Diego and visit it again!

We just loved Quinns Cottage, the garden was amazing with such beautiful smells and the area was very peacful which is something we are used too! The view overlooking Mission Hills was great and we enjoyed a relaxing spa at night. It was fully stocked which was really useful when we wanted to have a home cooked meal for a change! I recommend this cottage and would definitely be back to stay when we can.

Perfect Family Holiday
Perfect Family Holiday
Our family of two adults and two teens chose to stay here during our first visit to San Diego and I'm so glad that we did. Being part of the main house you do feel as though you are guests of the owners but they were only ever helpful and never intrusive. The cottage is in a beautiful and quiet neighbourhood but just a short drive from everything we wanted to do and see during our stay. In my view the accommodation is more spacious than the photos suggest. The king bed is enormous, and I can't think of anything we could have needed during our stay that wasn't provided. I loved starting my days with breakfast in the garden, watching out for the hummingbird and ending them with a glass of wine on the deck watching the sun set over the valley. My children loved the hot tub and, after dark we all enjoyed working our way through the chest of games. Overall I don't think we could have picked a better place to stay.

Amazing place to stay in lovely San Diego
Quinn cottage is a charming, comfortable and a very convenient place to stay in San Diego. It is located in a beautiful residential area with lovely homes, well maintained gardens and very friendly people. We enjoyed our morning walks to the neighboring coffee shop quite a bit. The location is great for easy access to all attractions and places of interest. The cottage itself is lovely, spotless clean, with every single detail carefully thought of and prepared for a care-free stay. The garden is unique and worthy of a cover page of Home and Garden magazine. It is a great place to have breakfast in the morning and watch the sunset while sipping a glass of wine in the evening. Mary and Jeff were more than helpful and made us feel like the most welcome guests.

Quaint and Comfortable
Quaint and Comfortable
We had a very pleasant stay at the Quinn Cottage and Jeff and Mary were great hosts. From the treats that awaited us upon arrival, the milk, eggs and butter in the fridge to help with the next morning, the well stocked pantry, Mary even put out a rice cooker for us so we did not have to take one. Jeff was very helpful and gave us some good recommendations and tips. Our kids had fun taking part in the neighborhood July 4th parade that they recommended us. The gardens were very beautiful and we loved sitting out in the morning. Our daughter was delighted to see a real lemon tree. Thank you very much for letting us use your lovely lovely cottage and we will definitely come stay there again. and recommend this place to our friends.

Unmatched HospitalityGuest comment entered by owner
From the Quinn Cottage guest book: "We are convinced if we looked up the word "hospitality" in the dictionary, a picture of Mary and Jeff Quinn would be right there...no need for a definition! We have enjoyed so many things during our three weeks at Quinn Cottage: the fabulous gardens; a stunning bouquet left at our door for a special celebration; detailed written instructions and tips; help with an extra guest who visited; the morning paper; loan of a house phone to help solve an unexpected car problem; the "welcome" treats greeting us upon arrival -- all provided while giving us peace and privacy. We only have one complaint....we can't stay longer or, better yet, move in permanently! We are grateful for all the TLC and everything that gave us such an amazing Quinn Cottage stay."

About the owner: We are life-long residents of San Diego and love our city and sharing it with others. We have been active in the business, entertainment, and museum communities of San Diego, so have lots of good advice about how to create a truly unique visitor experience here. We are passionate gardeners, creating beautiful and delightful surroundings for the cottage. Our pride in Quinn Cottage is obvious, so come and see it for yourself. We know you will love what you find!
Why the Owner Chose Mission Hills:
We moved our growing family to Mission Hills in 1983 and have raised our five children in this amazing neighborhood. We chose it for its 'small town' qualities: everyone knows one another, neighbors take care of each other as well as meet up for coffee, the community is vibrant, eclectic, and safe. Everyone walks here -- to work if possible, to shops and restaurants, to the park, and just for pleasure. After 28 years we still enjoy looking at the many, many beautiful homes on our streets. Mission Hills residents are helpful, friendly, and inviting. They are proud of their community and welcome visitors to it. Come and get the best of both worlds -- a village in the middle of urban San Diego. We also have the best weather in San Diego -- high enough to avoid the fog but the perfect elevation to catch the ocean breezes all year long. Living or visiting here is a pretty magical experience.
The Unique Benefits at this Guest House:
Quinn Cottage is more wonderful than the website photos can possibly show. Every room is charming, cozy, and relaxing. The surrounding gardens are striking. Watching a beautiful sunset over the ocean every evening from the deck is the perfect end to a day. While San Diego has many, many special tourist attractions, our rental guests look forward with pleasure to returning to their serene retreat after their excursions. Quinn Cottage is not just a place to stay -- it is a vacation in itself.
