Our first experience on the Outer Banks, and this house was just perfect for our family of 3, plus 2 good friends. We wanted a not-too-big house on the water, and this was it. Two people in our party are surfers, and this was an excellent location for that. The office was great to work with, too. We hope to be able to come back another year, a little more in season next time!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you Lisa. John and I are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We are excited about a few improvements we are working on for this spring. Watch our site for new photos. We hope you come back soon!

Once Wind Chimes, Always Wind Chimes!

Looking at other very satisfied occupants’ comments in the Wind Chimes guestbook, one is not surprised to find descriptive words such as “beautiful house”, “ideal vacation house” or even better: “home away from home”. I couldn’t agree more. Having been a guest of Wind Chimes for at least eight years, I can vouch for the truth and sincerity of these statements. But last year (2011) old Wind Chimes was purchased by the Jameson family and experienced a total transformation, a rejuvenating facelift: Additional windows were installed, thus allowing much more daylight to penetrate; the entire house was tastefully refurnished and painted with warm colors, a new, large TV was provided, and the kitchen was completely modernized to make anyone’s stay in the house even more pleasant. But what I found absolutely remarkable is that the Jameson family not only opened the door to their home, they opened their hearts with their warm welcome. Marti and John are not just running a business, they are genuinely interested in the well-being of their tenants, and we felt this through a multitude of little details. Just look at the colorful and bountiful set of dishes, the two coffee machines (you can now drink decaf at the same time as another guest imbibes their regular coffee), utensils just like at home, the comfortable furniture, etc. They fixed up the house as if they were going to live in it themselves! I find the unique location of the house footsteps from the beach with the soothing sound of the waves, the terrace overlooking Ocean and Sound providing spectacular views of sunrise and sunset, together with the incomparable serenity of the Outer Banks extremely invigorating. Even my older son who lives in a Hawaiian paradise finds it rewarding to make this 8,000 miles trip! Personally, a week at Wind Chimes totally regenerated me and helped repair a strained relation with my son. What can one want more from a vacation? To all my successors at Wind Chimes: Enjoy this home (not just a “vacation house”), treat it as if it were your own, reset your button for the coming year, return often. I know I will. I’ve already booked for next year!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you so much Francis. John and I are so thankful for returning guests who treat our cottage like their own. We love to relax at the cottage several times during the year, so I am always trying to find ways to make it a little better. This summer we will enjoy ourselves with our kids and a few of their friends along.

WOW!!! What can we say? We had a wonderful vacation at Wind Chimes! Marti and John have a great “home away from home”. Wind Chimes is a “traditional” Hatteras Island cottage that is perfect for a couples “romantic getaway” or a small family vacation. This house feels like you are ocean front . . . so close you can hear the ocean with ease 24 hours a day. We really enjoyed the proximity and easy access to the beach. The house is very charming, clean, cozy, and comfortable, has great views and all the amenities you would expect. The kitchen is well equipped (including a crock pot), but, if you don’t want to cook, the local restaurants have great food. (We suggest you try Sting Wray’s where Terry, the manager, will take care of you.) We especially enjoyed our morning coffee at the picnic table on the deck, watching the boats, dolphins, pelicans, seagulls and surfers. The “crow’s nest” has wonderful views of the ocean and sound, and is great for sunrise and sunset pictures. We reveled in the natural beauty of the island and the fishing was great too. We had the pleasure of meeting a special seagull, known to the locals as “Jonathan”. We appreciate the historical sites in the area, especially the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station. It is a very interesting place and Linda and James (the “caretakers”) are extremely knowledgeable of the stations history. The pictures shown on VRBO are beautiful, but you simply cannot capture how special the house is or the beauty of Rodanthe. A short walk down the beach, you stroll past the Serendipity House featured in the movie "Nights of Rodanthe". If you haven’t read the book or watched the movie, both are available at Wind Chimes. Marti and John are exceptional owners to deal with and want to provide their guests with a vacation home that you will want to return to again and again. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND Wind Chimes and didn’t want to leave . . . Can’t wait for our next visit!!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Wow! What Can WE say! Since purchasing Wind Chimes this fall, we have been trying our best to make improvements to delight our future guests. We are so glad to hear that you are as excited as we are about Wind Chimes, our little beach neighborhood, Rodanthe, and Hatteras Island.

About the owner: John and Marti were inspired to purchase Wind Chimes for its unique quality - Although a Small Cottage, it has fabulous beach access and views. Most beach lots with such great views and access would have a much larger house at a much larger price tag. Wind Chimes is perfect for smaller gatherings. While the Google map shows Wind Chimes as 2 back from the ocean, in the volatile world of the OBX it is now a 1 back. You can see on the map the long lot to the north, which is undeveloped - allowing for jaw-dropping views and access. The Jameson family loves remodeling and renovation projects, and had a blast updating this adorable cottage.
Why the Owner Chose Rodanthe:
Marti and John love Hatteras Island for its large natural preserves and love Rodanthe especially for its unparalleled views and water access. Hatteras Island is so narrow in Rodanthe, that you can walk to and see both the ocean and the sound from Wind Chimes. John and Marti felt a need for a cozy cottage to delight smaller groups - and are sensitive to super-active guests and older ones who feel stifled by multiple flights of stairs - 14 steps from sand to kitchen.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
If you like a beach just busy enough to be interesting, but want enough space so that no one is ever close enough to hear your conversations, this is for you. There are surfers and dolphins year-round to watch, swim or fish in the surf, shop, or make Tie-Dyes like we did. Take a walk or jog up the beach, past the newly-located 'Nights in Rodanthe' Inn. Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum down island. You can be as busy or lazy as you want. This is NOT Ocean City, MD - if you crave auto congestion, high-rises, and McDonald's, this is NOT for you.
