THE BAHAMAS - 3,000 ISLANDS
Officially, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is a nation of 353,000 residents scattered across 3,000 islands, cays and islets with Nassau as its capital city. 'Baja Mar' is Spanish for 'low sea' and this group of Caribbean Islands rests on the shallowest part called The Great Bahama Bank giving it's unique water clarity and abundance of sea life. Originally inhabited by the Lucayans, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492 (the first tourist). While the Spanish never settled the Bahamas, English Puritans from Bermuda were the first European settlers. During the 18th century, The Bahamas became a haven for pirates. In an attempt to clamp down on piracy, the Bahamas became a British Crown Colony in 1718. After the American War of Independence in 1776, some 7,300 British loyalists and their slaves moved to the Bahamas to set up cotton plantations and lumber mills. Slavery was abolished in 1834 and their descendants, both British and slaves, populate the islands today.
NASSAU / NEW PROVIDENCE
Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau (formerly known as Charlestown) is the capital and largest city in the Bahamas with a population of 250,000 islanders, or roughly 70% of the nation's total population. As such, Nassau has become the commercial hub for the whole Bahamas, boasting over 400 banks and trust companies. Well over 4 million tourists visit the island annually, either by plane (staying in hotels) or arriving by cruise ship. Today, the city of Nassau dominates the entire island and it's satellite, Paradise Island (Atlantis). Nassau has an attractive harbor, a colorful blend of old world colonial architecture and a busy, modern-day cruise port.
CABLE BEACH
Cable Beach is recognized as the hotel district of Nassau and is famous for it's 14 mile stretch of golden sand beach and crystal clear water. Movie stars have known for years that the Bahamas are not only natural movie sets, Cable Beach is of Oscar-quality. Cable Beach is also known for it’s shopping and dining. BBQ Beach, Androsia and Capriccio are three of the best dining options in the Cable Beach area, each offering unique décor, a serene atmosphere, and distinctive cuisine. The Fish Fry area is a must-see eatery attraction. Cable Beach is also home to one of the only two casinos on the island.
CURRENCY & BANKING
The US Dollar is on par with the Bahamian dollar and both are accepted equally across the island. ATMs and banks are located throughout the island too. Some smaller businesses do not accept credit or debit cards, so having cash on hand is helpful. Some Bahamian currency and coins are considered novelties and make good souvenirs such as the square 15¢ coin and the $3.00 bill.
LOCAL LANGUAGE
English (more British than American) is the official language in Nassau, but you’ll likely encounter the locals speaking a more colorful Bahamian Dialect, which is English intertwined with Bahamian Creole. Example: “Whesa yuh tink usea goin’?” means “Where are you going?” Did you ever wonder where Jar Jar Binks picked up his accent?
ELECTRICITY & WATER
Standard North American 120-volt / 60-cycle AC current is used. All your existing power cords and electronics will plug right into the wall. No special adaptors are needed. The Nassau water supply is perfectly fine to drink straight from the tap. Bottled water is also available throughout the island.
MEDICAL & PRESCRIPTIONS
It's always a good idea to bring your prescription medication with you, however, there are 77 pharmacies on island who can fill your US prescriptions as long as it has your doctor's signature. There are also numerous walk-in clinics and internationally trained doctors in Nassau. There are two hospitals (Princess Margaret and Doctor’s Hospital) that are equipped to respond to emergency medical situations.
WEATHER & WATER TEMPRETURE
Surrounded by balmy tradewinds streaming off the warm Gulf Stream, Nassau is blessed with a wonderful semi-tropical climate. Temperatures range from 70o to 80o (F) most days. Rarely does it drop below 60o or climb above 90o (F). Water temperatures range from 74o to 80o (F).
CELL PHONE ROMING
AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile all offer roaming services for Nassau and cell phone coverage is good throughout the island. Roaming rates for the United States and Canada are $2.24 per minute and is billed through your home service provider. This includes “toll free” numbers. Call your service provider before you go for discounted package plans for voice, data and/or texting.
LOCAL OPTIONS
The local wireless company, Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) provides a variety of services. You can save money on long-distance by purchasing phone cards. These have great rates to the U.S. and Canada and can be found at any BTC location in Nassau. Alternately, you can purchase a 'Cybercell' Bahamas Prepaid SIM Card from BTC. A third choice is renting a phone from Cellular Abroad.
RESORT WIFI COVERAGE
Blue Water Resort has excellent WiFi coverage property-wide and at a very nominal cost. You will find it easy to keep up with your publications and websites by simply logging on. You can also save money on long distance calls by downloading an app like SKYPE, LINE2 or JAJAH and conducting your calls over the internet. It’s easier than you think.
WHAT TO WEAR
The Nassau is a very casual place and Blue Water Resort even more so. At the resort, your bathing suit is fine. If you venture off property, shorts are OK for men, and casual spring or summer dresses are appropriate for women throughout the year.
TIPPING
Except at Blue Water Resort (where tipping is not automatic), 15% is automatically added to most other food and beverage checks, so be sure to look. Taxi drivers should be tipped 15% of the fare. If a bellman helps you with your bags, $1 to $2 per bag is appropriate.
DRIVING
Driving is European style - on the left hand side of the road. When crossing the street, be sure to double-check for traffic in both directions. Roundabouts (instead of stop lights) are common on the island, which adds another element of excitement.
DRINKING AGE
The legal drinking age in The Bahamas is 18.

We stayed at the Blue Water Resort at Guanahani Village in January of this year and though it was not as hot in the Bahamas as we would have liked, we loved the resort! Before our visit, we researched and found many positive and some mixed reviews, so we didn't know exactly what we would find. We also discovered through the resort site, that the resort was undergoing renovation and while we wished for a spanking brand new room, there was no way to guarantee that is what we would receive. We ultimately decided to stay because it offered the best value for our money - three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a full sized kitchen. Everyone would have enough room. We stayed in one of the garden villas that was partially renovated. Score! Loved the patio with grill and lounge chairs. It was private, peaceful and park like. The sliding doors, were really sliding glass walls and with the outer doors locked, we could let our three year old play outside and still be able to see him from the inside. He loves the beach as do we and the one downside to the resort is that the beach is fairly small, but this is the Bahamas and there are tons of cool beaches! I mentioned the fully equiped kitchen. It has everything you could need, down to the electric kettle for tea! The one negative is that there is not a lot of space in the kitchen to store your groceries unless you move the dishes around. Bring your own groceries! Food is tremendously expensive in the Bahamas. While you may not want to cook on vacation everyday, having the option, especially when you have children is a definite plus! And with the money we saved we were able to do many of the top attractions, like the Powerboats, Swim with the Dolphins and the Adastra Gardens. We tried the Pirates tour, but our son would have no part of it! The staff was tremendous. They were always smiling and looking to see what they could do to make our stay more enjoyable. One of the staff even gave us a ride to the fish fry when she saw us waiting at the bus stop (which is right outside the resort). She insisted! They were knowledgeable and when the time came to discuss the timeshare option, there was no high pressure! Riding the bus is enjoyable and super easy! Overall, we love the Bahamas and we loved our stay at Blue Water Resort! If you are travelling with a family or just want to relax, this is the place for you. If you are looking for the nightlife out of your hotel, not so much.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We stayed for a week. The garden view is OK, but the AC unit is in the master bedroom, and it is so loud we could not sleep. Pool is very warm, but beach is very small. The condo is very nice, but you need ear plugs in the master bedroom.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

When we arrived at the resort I was a little worried about my choice in location based on the outside appearance. Once I entered the Condo I knew I had made a perfect choice. The units are HUGE with all up to date ammenities. The ocean view rooms had ceiling to floor windows that allowed for a perfect view of the ocean. The private beach out back was perfect for a small number of family and friends I was able to rest and still keep a watchful eye on the kids because it wasn't too big, you can also walk by water to any other resorts for a more scenic view of the strip. The staff was extremely pleasant. The units were clean, the resort is in walking distance to shops and restaurants and has a bus stop right in front to travel to downtown. This will be our spot yearly for a girls vacation from here on out! I loved it.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 12/13

Large fully equiped kitchen area, large dining area & large living room area on first floor. Large master bedroom with full bathroom, another bedroom with two beds, full bathroom in hallway on second floor. Bedroom with two beds & two roll-away beds on third floor. Strip mall across the street with several restaurants. A grocery store about 4 to 5 blocks away in walking distance. The rooms were clean & neat & very very large, something you can't say about a lot of motels/hotels in Nassau.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/4

The Blue Water Resort is a great place to stay if you like condos versus hotels. The ocean villas are three level condos with lots of room and a great view of the ocean and pool. It is only a few blocks from the Casino and restaurants. There is a large grocery store only a couple of blocks away. The beach is small but very private and beautiful. The staff was great and very attentive. We rented a car and found this easier than always having to get a taxi. Parking is no problem at the condo. We have stayed at a number of hotels on the island and like the Blue Water Resort the best.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 8/9

I have stayed at Blue Water resort twice and am planning a special 60th birthday celebration next August. Both previous visits were for one week with friends. This was a perfect amount of time to relax and really feel that I was on vacation. Nassua is beautiful and this location is perfect for me and my friends. The service was great both times. Very friendly and helpful staff. These are all girl holidays which include preparing fresh seafood and enjoying the tropical fruits of the West Indies. The kitchen allows for plenty of cooking and the location itself is perfect for entertaining. I have travelled extensively in my life and always come back to Nassau for a fun relaxing vacation. We stayed here during huricane Earl. Just a little rain, but watching the waves and going to the beach was awesome! Tiki hut for drinks and light meals with conversation with locals - FUN! The bus stops right outside the resort. Perfect for trips to Senor Frogs, the Fish Fry, or downtown shopping. A quick cab ride to Atlantis to vist was more than sufficent. Don't forget to try the local Beer Kalik or flavored rums. All the 3 bedroom units are being renovated. Staff was outstanding! Best and most friendly I've come across in a long time.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/7

Just walked in the door from a great week at Tranquility. We stayed with our two children, ages 5 and 8. This is the perfect place if you are looking for a quiet getaway.., The sunsets from the deck are unreal and the sound of the ocean slapping against the coral was so peaceful. I would definately recommend this to someone who is looking to get away from it allDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We stayed here last week and it was EXACTLY what we wanted! First of all the villas offer such amazing space and are really nice, that you feel like you are just at home (except for whats coming). Except for the beach and the ocean and the everything! What I really enjoyed was that even though we had our own private home, there were certain amenities Blue Water Resort's Villas offer that other homes we have stayed at in the past can't offer because they are just isolated homes. This includes accessibility to everything: Blue Water is on Cable Beach which is the hot spot on the island, so we could walk to anything whenever we decided to wonder from the property. There is a staff there that helped us with whatever we needed - be it restaurant suggestions, or activity bookings. Also there is a poolside bar on the property which had amazing drinks and a great crew working there! Overall it was great to have our privacy and space, but have everything that a hotel has that a private home typically does not - and at the same price of the more affordable private home (or actually even less). The economies of scale worked in our favor and we have already booked to go back this Fall! We miss you guys!!! John & DaraDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2
