Berkeley Springs bungalow description
COME PLAY AT THE RIVER!
Designed as a retreat for personal rest and relaxation, River House WV offers a unique escape from the tumult of everyday life--and endless opportunities to unwind and have fun!
Just a 90-minute drive from the Baltimore/Washington DC areas, River House WV is an original 1925 Arts & Crafts bungalow set above a spectacular bend of the sparkling Cacapon River! Just 5 miles from the center of downtown Berkeley Springs in the small town of Great Cacapon (closer than many lodgings located IN Berkeley Springs!) Many members of our 'Family of Guests' regard River House WV as a second home (ask about our repeat customer program!)
January through March is a quiet time--perfect for relaxing by the river, but there's also plenty to do! Hike, bike, kayak or canoe, or check the local events calendar below!
April is 'Get Outdoors Month' here in Morgan County--And Springtime is the best time to 'Wild Walk' at River House WV with our naturalist as the mountain trees and flowers awaken! Start a morning with a dose of Appalachian plantlore and some edibles from the garden before you head to the hammock or river deck with a good book...
Summer weather beckons our guests down to the very private river area for swimming, tubing, kayaking and fabulous fishing! The beautiful Cacapon River--just below our yard--is chock-full of large and small-mouth bass, catfish and bluegills.
All Summer long--Come float our 'Tube Loop'!
Our solitary location on the riverbend allows our guests a unique opportunity--Guests can put in the river at River House WV, float to a public access area and a short walk overland, then put in again at another public access and float back to the house! Just in time to pick peaches or concord grapes...
In Autumn the peak colors envelope River House WV as apple butter is made in the Berkeley Springs town square and local artists open their studios to the public for amazing pre-holiday shopping! At the same time the apples and pears start to drop from the trees in our yard...
In Winter, many folks come to share the complete peace and quiet that reside here in our mountain valley, and the simple pleasures afforded by our bungalow. (Although, groups of friends or music circles around the backyard firepit are as common as s'mores lately, so the woodpeckers are more curious than ever!)
Available year-round at River House WV: On-site 'Wlld Walks' (free to guests) and simple-living classes (with pre-arrangment). We leave a free sample bottle of local raw honey from the Farmer's Market and a current issue of the local newspaper to welcome all guests, as well as a basket full of samples and special offers from shops and restaurants in Berkeley Springs. At River House WV, along with a local phone book, maps and updated Studio Tour Guide, guests find our Sourcebooks which list local services and providers, from current events to all the local restaurant menus!
Some guests don't leave River House WV while they're here. Others split their time at the house and river with the local parks, waterways and wildlife management areas that abound here. Many folks visit the charming, historic small art town of Berkeley Springs, the Country's First Spa, with its wonderful restaurants, shops, spas and galleries! The Overlook at Propsect Peak--from which you can see the mountains of 3 states--lay in between, so the 5 miles between River House WV and Berkeley Springs are breathtaking! As some friends in Berkeley Springs say, we're 'right over the big mountain!'
Whenever you need to getaway, River House WV presents the stage--you choose the activities!

Hands Down the Best Place I have Stayed in 25 years!!
Hands Down the Best Place I have Stayed in 25 years!!
River House WV is by far the best place I have stayed in the last 25 years. I was looking for a get-away in the mountains with a short drive from where I live in Lancaster, PA. The two and a half hour drive was scenic and when I arrived at River House, I was greeted like I was a long lost friend of the family. The rooms are cozy, sunny and spacious and can accommodate singles, couples, families and can easily handle 8 people without being crowded. The gazebo out back served as my "breakfast room" where I enjoyed seeing deer in the yard and hearing birds of all kinds while I ate. There is a short walk down to the river where great fishing can be had and in the warmer months (also came here in July with friends) tubing down the river is an activity worth trying out. There is an ouside firepit for "singing round the campfire" and making smores. The flora surrounding River House provides fresh fruits during the different seasons. I took pears from several trees on the grounds and made an amazing pear salsa. Berkley Springs is an artsy town with plenty to see and do. Activities range from visiting local artisan shops to a used book store where I found several books I just had to have. Then since it was the first Saturday of the month, I had a card reading done by a local astrologer. There are organic restaurants to enjoy as well as other more traditional ones. One thing you will not find are fast food joints (thank heavens). I also relaxed by having a massage in town by one of the local massage therapists. All I can say about that is Ahhhhhhhh! Just what I needed. You can also partake of the Springs and get in them in the summer. There are also Roman Baths, so if you like your water hot, you can take a long muscle soothing soak. The restaurant I enjoyed the most (although it was hard to choose just one) is Panorama at the Peak. The food and service were impecable and the view overlooking the valley is amazing. As a Social Worker who needs to relax and unwind several times a year, this is the place I go to achieve that goal. An added plus for those who don't like to kennel or leave their dogs behind is you can bring your dog along. This magical place is for anyone, no matter their age. There is always something to do (if you want to) and there are many ways to relax too. The owners are amazing people who will bend over backward to make your stay a fantastic time. I am happy to say that I consider them friends and family. I highly recommended!!!!

About the owner: An artist by trade/naturalist by design, I maintain my artglass studio in a converted garage adjacent to River House WV--which has become a favorite gathering spot for some of my regular guests! My husband is a general contractor (who loves to hunt and fish!), and as we share an affinity for homes of this period, he enjoys taking care of and making improvements to River House WV...Our home-away-from-home above the river! We're both active in our community--Currently serving on several boards, maintaining active membership in local organizations such as The Morgan County Association of Food and Farms (MCAFF), Travel Berkeley Springs (TBS) and the Morgan Arts Council (MAC)and as well as organizing/participating in numerous local events (including the Berkeley Springs Fall Studio Tour, annual road clean-ups and exhibit curating at the local artists coop, The Ice House Gallery). Among other things, such involvement helps keep us current with all that's happening in our busy and upbeat area!
Why the Owner Chose Berkeley Springs:
We live here, love where we live, and have always played in this river! Friends had owned the home, and were selling it in order to move to another area. We love River House WV and its location--close to our own home, so we're on hand if you need us--on the Cacapon River, at the very edge of a very small town, so near to Berkeley Springs. We purchased River House WV as OUR vacation home and art studio, and to share! We really enjoy introducing people (or welcoming them back!) to our rich and beautiful area, with its natural abundance and warm and supportive local community. Our guests are FABULOUS! Sharing our river home has given us the opportunity to meet some truly wonderful folks!
The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow:
The peace and quiet of the Cacapon River are unrivaled, and the beautiful riverside property at River House WV is one of the most secluded and private spots there is--Truly a nature lover's paradise! It's not uncommon to see not only birds of every color and description, including bald and golden eagles and numerous variety of hawks, songbirds and water bird like kingfishers and herons-both blue and green--but guests have reported seeing deer, foxes, minks, muskrats, river otters, possums and an occasional raccoon or even bobcat. (Last year, one of our regular guests regaled us with tales of a delightful afternoon spent floating the loop with our resident beaver!)
