Westfield cottage description

Come visit us at Steelhead Run offering panoramic views of the sunsets on Lake Erie. You will find this one bedroom cottage to be quite comfortable offering all the utility of a smaller home. We have another cottage next door, see VRBO #427161. When you arrive you will find yourself nestled between Lake Erie and Chautauqua Creek on 7 forested acres. Both features can be accessed in less than a 200 foot walk from the cottage. On the beach you can spend time hunting for beach glass and driftwood, or take the half-mile walk along the beach to Barcelona Harbor area to enjoy a bit to eat, a cocktail, or even purchase a smoked fish at the fish market. Barcelona Harbor also offers a marina and a public launching facility to access Lake Erie. Do you want to go fishing? Take a charter out of the harbor, or try and hit the world renowned Steelhead fishery found in Chautauqua Creek. Don’t worry if Lake Erie is a little too rough on that day for boating. Make a trip to any one of the four inland lakes a short drive from the cottage. Chautauqua Lake is the largest and closest (5mi.) inland lake to the cottage. Chautauqua Lake offers many attractions available by boat that includes, The Chautauqua Institution, Midway Amusement Park, Long Point State Park, shopping, and numerous restaurant/bar establishments. There is truly something for everyone here.
Consider a wine tour if you’re looking to venture away from the lake for a bit. Lake Erie Wine Country, located in the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, extends roughly 45 miles from Silver Creek, New York to North East, Pennsylvania. At the end of 2011, it has become home to over 24 commercial and estate wineries. Other attractions within arms reach include Niagara Falls, restaurants, ski resorts, snowmobile trails, nature trails, golf courses, inland lakes, shopping, and a casino, most in less than a 30 mile radius. Additionally, one can find cultural stimulation at Chautauqua Institution. Here you can enjoy their symphony, concerts, speaking venues and theater performances.

As a courtesy to the neighboring cottage, please respect the maximum number of guests in our cottages. We do understand that our guests want to share the experience of Steelhead Run with friends and family. Visitors are certainly welcome, but please limit their numbers to insure that there is minimal disturbance to the neighbors.

If you are looking for an event location, or anticipate large group size please consider reserving both cottages. We have successfully accommodated events such as small family reunions, church retreats, and even professional photo shoots.

We are located ½ mile from the New York State Thruway (I-90), Exit 60. From here, you will find that it’s a quick ride to and from the Buffalo or Erie International Airports.

We stayed at the cabin the weekend of the Mayville President's Day Ice Festival. It was just perfect! We braved the weather and even walked on the beach to take pics and collect a few rocks. The frozen lake was surreal. I've never seen anything like it. The cabin was beautiful, very clean, and cozy. The amenities and extras provided by the owner were perfect as well. His photos and description of the cabin are spot on and actually are even better in person. The Lake Erie shore is right in your back yard. Every season would have it's own special magical beauty. There were four of us (adults) that stayed in the cabin. We slept on the pull out couch in the LR and let our friends have the bedroom. The bedroom has a double bunk I believe, so if you have kids, that would work good as well. The cabin was just fine for a weekend stay. If you are going to stay longer than that (with 4 adults), you might prefer the two bedroom cabin. (and Dave suggested that as well). But we were in and out quite a bit, so it was perfect for our little weekend away. We just loved it! We ate breakfast at Westfield Main Diner. It's a quaint little place; the prices were good and food was pretty good as well. We also had dinner at a place called Guppies in Bemus Point. Great place! And on the way home we were directed to a place called Pine Junction in Clymer (NY). That place was awesome! It's on the NYS snowmobile trail and it was well worth the detour! I got some fantastic pics of the sunset that Sat evening. Barcelona Harbor, the Sea Lion, and lighthouse are only a couple of minutes away. I took lots of pictures of the area. Chautauqua Lake is only about an eight mile drive and it is awesome as well. I honestly can't say enough good things about Steelhead Cabins and Dave the owner. I spoke with him several times before our arrival and he was very informative, accommodating, and kind. We kind of interrupted him on our way out, as we wanted to meet him and thank him personally for our stay at his cabin. (Hopefully, we didn't delay you too much Dave). Thank you again Dave and we will be back. Maybe when the weather is a little warmer as to enjoy the scenery of a different season.

Our second Christmas at Steelhead Run, it's a tradition now! We had snow and a big storm blow in, but stayed very warm and cozy in the cottage. The cottage has everything you need, just bring your food and warm clothes, and you are all set! Fishing conditions were brutal - high winds, ice, and low temperatures - but lots of fun, and fish were caught every day. Our Labs swam in Lake Erie and ran on the beach before the storm came in, and played in the snow and chased the squirrels when the waves got too high. A very peaceful way to end our year. Thanks!

Owner response: Excellent News! Well, you just missed a REALLY good storm. A lot like what you guys experienced but bitter cold. Imagine 10 below zero with 45 mph gusts! However, as you know everyone is safe and comfortable inside the cottages. I always get a charge on how angry Mother Nature can get once and awhile. We really do love the dynamic seasonal changes at Steelhead Run. As I type this I am watching the lake create 20’ plus ice formations at the shoreline from the wave action. Come back this summer and enjoy a sunset over a flat lake. It doesn’t sound like the dogs would care either way though—LOL. Thanks for the great review, Dave

We found the cabin a great place to rest and getaway from our busy lives, and wished we had been snowed in so we could've stayed longer. Especially liked the constant sound of crashing waves and view of Lake or forest from any window. It was nice to walk out the door and onto the Lake Erie beach (which we had to ourselves in the snowy weather) to Barcelona Harbor to see the gulls and diving ducks. Property was cleanest of any rental cabin I've stayed in and kitchen had all the cookware and supplies needed to prepare and serve home-cooked meals. A good place to call home for a few peaceful days of birding, sightseeing, and contemplating life--bring your own friend, food, binoculars, games, books, or movies (if you're not into TV), and wind-blocking jackets!

Owner response: Thanks Amy! We really make an effort to insure that the cottages are very clean when our guests arrive. Also, that the places are stocked comparable to what we all have at home. I appreciate your recognition and comments regarding the condition of the cottages. Dave

After my second stay this cottage is officially my favorite getaway for a week of Steelhead fishing, as well as getting a relaxing soul cleansing. The cottage itself is cleanest and best appointed one of its kind and the property that it’s on is ideal for it. Secluded yet not far away from anything you might need or want to go to. It is the best calm and serene place to just kick back and relax with no interruptions or worries. On both my stays, I found that the people who rented the neighboring cottage to have the same frame of mind as myself; respectful, friendly, and simply looking for quiet and peaceful getaway. After the 7 hour car trip to arrive, my dog burst into excitement when she realized we were back here again. Jumping over me when I opened the car door, she went running around checking all the familiar spots from her memory of our last stay. And at the end of the week she was visibly much more reluctant than myself to get in the car to go home. We will be back. Dave and family, Thanks again.

Always nice having you visit with us. I don’t know how you continue to bring perfect weather to Steelhead Run when you visit, but keep up the good work! I am sorry we did not visit more, I had a busier than average week. Thanks again, Dave

We really had a great time during our recent stay at Steelhead Run cottage. We fished, kayaked, and had campfires every night. What a nice little cottage! It has everything you need and very clean. Every bit of space is well utilized. The view and sunsets are fabulous. We had the best donut ever at the Westfield Farmer's Market. We are already planning our 2014 vacation back here.

We stayed at the cottage over Christmas with our dogs. The cottage was warm and inviting, very well built and in a quiet, private setting. Very comfortable beds, everything we needed for cooking was available in the kitchen. It was great to be right on the beach - although it was cold and windy, we walked with the dogs every day, they even swam in the lake. Fished every day in the Creek, had a fresh steelhead for Christmas dinner. Lots of good fishing spots within walking distance of the cottage. Westfield is a nice little town with restaurants, shops, and convenience stores, everything you could want. I found lots of beach glass and cool rocks to bring home. We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas in this lovely place, hope to come back again.

Perfect getaway! The cottage was so private, cozy and immaculately clean. The views of Lake Erie and the proximity to the beach were great. We unfortunately didn’t have the best weather but we still really enjoyed our stay. The recommendations that were given for local restaurants and places to visit were very helpful, we loved the Bark Grill and Main Diner. We will definitely be back again! Thank you!

Each cottage is professionally cleaned in between visits regardless of how well it is left. The ladies take a great deal of pride in what they do, and I am lucky to have them. I will pass along your comments; they always like to hear the feedback. Look forward to having you back, Dave

We really enjoyed relaxing at this great little cottage. The sunsets were beatiful and our dog enjoyed walks on the beach and chasing waves. Everything you need is provided and then some. The property is private and peaceful with fishing just a short walk down the beach. Hope to make a trip back for a longer stay next year! (sorry i forgot my lettuce in the fridge!)

Not a problem with the lettuce, the cleaning service offered it to the local rabbits. I do request that next time you forget the beer. I do have an agreement with the girls that I get to keep that! The Cottage is ALL that the description details. Well built, perfectly clean, very nicely appointed and supplied. I cannot add anything else to all the other reviews, they are all true and accurate. The location is fantastic; it has to be the envy of any other cottage. Personally, I would call this structure a Cabin but, with all of its amenities, the term Cottage suits it best. I came for the fall Steelhead fishing and was not disappointed at all. Not just because that the fish plentiful but because the Creek is RIGHT THERE!! If you forgot something at the cottage, you would not care because it will literally take you one minute to go back. The Lake is just steps away and the beautiful sunsets flood the kitchen table for dinner, or sit overlooking the beach in the bench swing. Plus there is a terrific yard area between the cottage and the beach. It was a perfectly relaxing week, bar none. The owner David stopped by for a chat, and I found him to be a very personable and genuinely friendly and accommodating. We talked about some common outdoorsman type interests and he even surprised me with the casual mention of a “celebrity” spokesperson he knew. But in town whenever I was asked where I was from and where I was staying, I said “New Jersey and at a little cabin right on the lake.” And from EVERY person I said that to, I got the same response, “Oh, your over at Dave Spann’s place, know him well.” And then I got great service. It seemed to me that David Spann was the real “celebrity” to know. Just to wrap-up, I am a 51 year old man who came with only his dog, for a quite week away from my daily business grind to simply watch the world spin without me, while holding a fishing pole in my hand and my dog smiling up at me. And this is the place where that came true. I’m still basking in the afterglow, once I snap too I am booking again for next year.

Owner response: Andy, thank you some much for sharing the attributes of Steelhead Run. It’s difficult to describe our cottages without the actual experience. You summed it up nicely. As far as the celebrity thing, well that’s just part of small town living. I’m definitely not a celebrity, but really do enjoy Westfield. Our family is proud to share our piece of Westfield with whomever wants’ to share.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: This property has been in our family since the late 60’s. My wife and I built a home on here in 1998. This is where we continue to raise our children, Anthony and Morgan.

                      Why the Owner Chose Westfield:
We chose to build here to provide visitors with actual beachfront access. Much of the Lake Erie shoreline is elevated high on bluffs making it quite inaccessible. While staying here, you will find access to the lake very easy and the beach to be quite extensive.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Whether you’re an experienced steelheader or beginner we can accommodate you. We have teamed up with Chrome Run Guide Service. Any anglers new to the fishery can take advantage of learning expert techniques necessary for landing steelhead. Call now for special rates on fishing packages. Remember, Chautauqua Creek is in the middle of 'Steelhead Alley' where anglers can head in either direction to fish other streams. Chautauqua Creek has one of the largest catch rates of Steelhead in 'Steelhead Alley'. It has been calculated that fishing success equals 2.5 fish/hr. of fishing effort.
