Machiasport cottage description

A small forested 'island' with a 1200 sq.ft. cottage nestled in the trees. The island is accessed by a narrow 600 foot causeway. The causeway beach provides easy launching for small boats and for swimming (if you are a hardy soul). The cottage has wonderful views from the many windows. The interior of the cottage is delightful and comfortable and charmingly appointed. The cottage was built in 1930. We completed a total renovation in 2008. This cottage is 'off the grid', meaning town supplied electricity is not available. We still have all the comforts! Lights, hot water heater, stove, refrigerator and fireplace are gas powered. The house is wired and a quiet generator can be run when electric power is needed. This generator is used also to pump the well to fill the the water tanks. Our caretaker will meet you upon arrival to show you how everything works. Mill point is truly a get away. There is no television, no telephone, no Internet. But, we have maximum ambiance!

              Year Purchased: 2001

About: My husband and I live in Southport, NC. We're both majorly into boating whether it be small boat sailing, off shore sailing, kayaking or messing about in little skiffs. George is a semi-retired electrical engineer presently doing the occasional offshore yacht delivery. I work as a captain for the NC State Ferries. When not on the water, we enjoy walking the dogs, hiking and cycling and working on our never ending projects. One of our major projects was refurbishing the Mill Point cottage and we're thrilled with the results! The next big project is refurbishing the Kitty Hawk, our 40ft. gaff rigged, pinky schooner.

              Why Machiasport:
This property was my husband's parent's summer cottage since 1979. We were lucky enough to end up with it. I first visited in 2000 and fell head over heels in love with the place. The property is very scenic and private. From the start, I thought it was a magical place. Surrounded by the sea, the distant roar of the ocean, the scent of the spruce trees, the ever changing light and tides -- it's heavenly! It's far enough away from things to feel like a true getaway, yet close enough for fabulous day trips to Acadia and Canada.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I most enjoy our proximity to the sea. You'd have to be on a boat to feel a closer connection to the sea! We love just walking around the property and marveling at the views. The feel of the cool sea breeze ( we come up after a typically very hot North Carolina summer ) is a delight to the senses. Even when the mainland gets hot, Mill Point being surrounded by cold water, is always pleasantly cool. We really enjoy the peace and quiet and ' unplugging '. The fact that we are a round piece of property, means you can choose your outside tempurature to some degree. There's a windward side, there's a protected side. Ther's a shady grove with a swing and a hammock. There's sunning on the rocks. There's the two side by side Adirondack chairs on the far point that have an awesome view. There's scrambling on the rocks that surround the 'island'. There's rock picking - sounds dull till you try it. We've got beautiful, sea tumbled rocks! We enjoy watching the lobster boats at work. We love star gazing from the upstairs balcony. We start each morning and end each day walking the perimeter of the property and pausing to take in the many views. We love launching the kayaks from our beach. We mostly love the feeling that we're in our own little world!
