What a delightful place to spend a holiday with my adult children! Sitting on the lanai enjoying turtles and dolphins swimming by in a charming home with thoughtful amenities! This home is one we hope to return to: walking distance to a nice beach, near by shopping center, and owner and caretaker who were kind and eager to help make our time together special. Nothing critical to say - other than we had to leave too soon, We highly recommend this vacation home as a place to stay in Kona.

Good location, wonderful to be on the water! We loved the sound of the ocean on the rocks that lulled us to sleep (it took my husband a couple of days to get used to it. The first night there he dreamed water was flooding our bedroom!) Thank you for another great VRBO experience!

Great place to stay. Saw many turtles in the tide pools just a short walk from the back porch. Kids walked out every morning to check out the various fish and life in the tide pools.

What fun to be right on the ocean, as it crashed on the lava just below the patio! The condo was well-furnished with lots of extras available, even towels, and laundry soap for the washing machine. Pool right across the street was enjoyed. We appreciated the many fans throughout, which, although it was hot and muggy, made the inside comfortable. Peter and Darla provided great information about places to eat, beaches to swim/snorkel. We did try Rapanui -- great -- and the Kona Brewing Company. Both were excellent. The sunset in the photo is just like what we saw! Thank you for a lovely stay!

Owner response: Aloha Lana and Donald, The waves breaking right outside the door is among our favorite features of KKSR 186. We're glad you also enjoyed our favorite restaurants and found our "local's guide" to Kona helpful. We look forward to hosting you again when you return to the Big Island! I booked this for my family at the last minute and was extremely pleased with the timely and attentive responses from Peter the owner. He definitely seems to work hard in providing good customer service and this was greatly appreciated as we scrambled to finalize our vacation. The condo came generally as advertised and we were pleased with our stay given the cost, but if we had paid anywhere close to the full listed price rather than the significant discount we got for a last-minute booking I would have been disappointed. It is a nice complex in a great location, but the unit definitely felt like an older rental that could stand a really extensive deep cleaning. We aren't neat freaks by any stretch of the imagination, but in comparison to a similar condo rental we had just left in Kauai it definitely seemed like it needed some more TLC. The unit is in a great location and with the water just outside the back door you witness some great action from the waves. That said, the ocean can get pretty loud so if you are a light sleeper and easily disturbed this might not be the best place for you. At least when we were there it wasn't gentle lapping of waves but more like crashing surf. Didn't bother us at all (in fact the opposite), but it is a very distinguishing feature of the unit that should be considered when choosing it. The lanai outside is nice, but bear in mind that what the pictures don't reveal is that it is a shared lanai for all of the units in that block so you may have a bunch of other folks sitting around you enjoying that sunset as well. We thought this was a really great location for exploring all along the Kona coast from Hapuna Beach down to Honomalino Beach and enjoyed our 3-night stay. You've got a decent beach within a reasonable walk (Kahalu’u Beach) and an even nicer one just a short drive way (Magic Sands Beach). The pool was enjoyed by our kids and the tennis appears to be top-notch (though we didn't actually partake). If you are going to be spending much time indoors, the design of the place definitely left it feeling a little cramped for a family of 2 adults and 2 elementary age boys, but as a place where you spend an hour or two at the beginning and end of each day it was fine and worlds better than most hotels.

Owner response: Aloha Jerry, Mahalo for your review, compliments and critique. Our housekeeper was onto the big banana leaf plant that had collected the combination of salt spray and fine volcanic ash that the trade winds sometimes carry the day I received your review. We’re trying something more aggressive than the regular hosing off, or will be replacing it. We’re also in the process, as I write this, of replacing the tile in the stairs and landing with hand hewn travertine. The waves action at KKSR can be impressive. Some of our guests absolutely love the sound of the ocean outside the window, though I’m used to sleeping in the very quiet country and during the winter when the waves can really be rocking I’ll sometimes use ear plugs at night rather than closing the windows. Regarding disclosure of the shared oceanfront area, there has always been a picture on our VRBO webpage that shows our block of 4 townhouses and the shared oceanfront patio and sea wall. It’s displayed there so any guests with small children are comfortable with our very close proximity to the ocean. Sorry you did not notice this before your arrival. One of the things we treasure about Kona is how so many visitors and locals alike pause from whatever they are doing to watch the sunset. It always gives us this shared feeling that we are just one big family on this island in the middle of the Pacific ocean! The Big Island has many places where you can be in absolute solitude at sunset, though the water’s edge of a condominium complex at sundown is not always one of them! We hope your journey home was safe and your experience of Hawaii memorable. Aloha, Peter and Darla

We had a good time here for a week, a family with 2 teenagers. Watching sunset with a glass of wine is sure to be remembered. Nice swimming pool and tennis courts are there for the night, kids like it a lot. The owner provides some tips for the acticities on the island, very useful.

Our family (my husband and I, adult child and friend) absolutely loved staying in this townhome. It was very clean, comfortable and we had everything we needed to make our stay effortless. When renting this, make sure you read the "Island Tips" that Peter and Darla include with your packet. We followed their advice on several of these tips and feel like we had inside information before arriving. We also were lucky in arriving a few minutes early and catching Jamie there cleaning, who told us where to buy food, liquor, fresh fish, eat out, and rent kayaks--all very good advice. The sunset views from the patio were beautiful and the ocean was literally right outside our door. We watched sea turtles and fish from the patio, as well as a few dolphins swimming by and loved hearing the sound of the surf at night. The pool and tennis courts are very close, as well as access to a small beach with tide pools. This was a great location as well--it is a short drive into Kailua-Kona where the gift shops, restaurants, and bars are located. The shopping center near the unit has a Sam Choy restaurant, which is extremely popular with locals and has great food. It also was close to the area where we caught our snorkel trip boat and the kayak rentals. We absolutely loved our trip to Kona and plan to do it again in the future. If available, this townhouse will be our destination!

Owner response: Aloha Arlene, Mahalo nui loa for your wonderful comments and we are delighted that you discovered so many of the things that we also love about this unit and Kona. We too have had great meals at Sam Choys in Keauhou! Glad you got to meet Jamie (our stellar housecleaner), we are fortunate to have a fantastic "ground crew," all of whom contribute to our efforts to provide as great of vacation experience as you had. Wow! Everything in the description was as good or better than described. The location is perfect - close to downtown but private and quiet. Calling this oceanfront is like saying the Grand Canyon is big. Photos do not convey just how close you are to the water. The first night the surf was so loud we thought the waves must be splashing onto the patio. After checking to make sure everything was still dry, we acclimated to the sound, which is actually very restful, and slept great every night. The condo was clean and well maintained with a good kitchen and a nice layout. Loved the master bedroom with its super comfy California king bed and outstanding views. LOTS of extra amenities including boogie boards, beach chairs, binoculars, snorkeling gear and small coolers that were perfect for packing lunch on car trips or beach picnics. Peter was very prompt in all communications and made sure we had lots of good recommendations for beaches, restaurants and other things to do. He and Darla have put together a wonderful vacation property and we would absolutely recommend this unit. We would recommend this unit to anyone wanting a relaxing vacation and the ability to cook some meals instead of eating out all the time. Having a washer and dryer in the unit means you can pack even lighter. For downtown Kona, we really enjoyed the sushi at Hayashi's You Make the Roll and lunch at Killer Tacos. If you want a STRONG but cheap mai tai, check out Pancho & Lefty's at happy hour (3-6 p.m. or after 9 p.m.). There's good snorkeling within walking distance of the condo if you head south down Ali'i Drive just past the Outrigger Hotel. If it's cloudy in Kona, drive north past the airport and go to Kua Beach (about 30 minutes away) or head further up to Hapuna Beach state park or Mauna Kea beach. You'll think you are in the cover story of a travel magazine. We LOVED everything about our vacation and absolutely will be back.

For us, vrbo.com provided an excellent site to find Peter and Darla, owners of this comfortable, neat, attractive home. Our stay here was our best Hawaii vacation so far...this time with our two adult children and going back many visits over decades to the era "before kids." We agreed that both the home and the Big Island contributed to this, and our Tips from the Owners document was a valuable tool too. We visited island attractions near and far (even dinner at Seaside in Hilo) but found it easy to be back at the breakwater watching the surf at the end of the day. We had as many as four chairs on the patio every day--the picture shows two but does not exaggerate at all the beauty of the scene! For both the rental and a during-stay call, Peter was incredibly prompt and responsive to our needs, and their property was a perfect home-away-from-home for our family. If you like what you see in their vrbo listing, you'll certainly like the property. Yes, the sunset (and for us the full moonset one morning) was straight out from the patio and the ocean side windows! It was just that nice.

Owner response: Aloha Tom, Mahalo for your comments and your stay. It is hard to beat those sunsets at the water's edge at this condo.... it's what made us fall in love with the place too! Thanks for the opportunity to provide your family with the "perfect home-away-from-home!" Good times abound! A hui ho! Peter and Darla

My boyfriend and I LOVED this place! We stayed at a large resort prior & on the Hilo side prior to staying here and wished we had stayed here the entire time. I frequently rent condos when traveling and this place is my all time favorite. The condo was clean, roomy, and had just about everything I needed in the kitchen (a french press would've made this place perfect...and impossible to leave). The beds were very comfortable and the dishwasher and w/d were very convenient. As for the resort itself, I liked that it was gated and the pool & tennis court appeared to be in great shape. The location is convenient, it's quiet at night but close to the beaches, markets, shops, restaurants, etc. Definitely walk to the Outrigger for sunset drinks one night...and the rest of the nights enjoy the view from your own unit. The outside table is literally steps away from the ocean. The view is amazing and it was so nice to hear the waves crashing at night. The owners impressed me from the minute I booked this place and their tips for the area were some of our best experiences (definitely head to Rapanui). They have been very pleasant to deal with and I really cannot say enough great things about this condo, stay here and you will definitely not be disappointed!

Thank you also for expressing your appreciation of the service and local tips we provide to our guests. Hopefully we can share a sunset drink at the Outrigger when you return! A hui ho! Quite a few bugs, some sort of rodent once we put poison it didn't come back, lost quite a bit of food. Paint coming off the walls in a few rooms. Excellent view of ocean and close to shopping. First and last time staying at this property, will stay at another unit next year. Third time staying in KKSR other units I have stayed in much nicer.

Owner response: We're sorry Billy that our townhouse at KKSR did not meet all of your expectations. As you know, bugs and rodents are part of the fauna of the islands, and their presence seems to wax and wane with variances in weather and humidity. These pests are managed by the homeowners association through contracted pest professionals. We wish you would have contacted us or the resident manager at the first sign of a rodent, as the problem would have been addressed immediately (as it was when I called them the day I read your review). The problem is minimized if no food is left out and the trash is removed twice daily. The paint is buckling around the windows where ocean moisture has seeped around the window flashing. We've repaired this several times and are now working with the homeowners association to replace the windows. The moisture around the windows is much less a problem in other units that are not right on the ocean. It's important to us that our guests have a good experience and we appreciate your feedback. We would like to offer you a discount at any of our four Kona properties should you decide to stay with us again in the future. With aloha, Peter and Darla

We just returned from a great stay in your condo while we attended a family wedding! The location is wonderful; seems to be in the middle for all sides of the mountain. Each day we drove either N, S, E, or W and did not feel pushed for time. We even spent time after dark viewing the glowing cauldera and got back to the condo in good time. The volcano is definitely the star attraction on the Big Island, but there are so many other interesting things to do and see. We enjoyed snorkeling at "Two-step" and the beach at Mauna Kea Resort. We did a lot of hiking all over the Island. We only used the pool once as there were so many great places to go and things to do. We also enjoyed eating at Jackie Rey's and many other restaurants. Mahalo, Peter and Darla for a great 2 weeks on the Big Island! John and Martha

This condo has everything one would need, including the ocean right outside the door. The development has some important historic sites that are worth reading about. Kahalu'u Beach is an easy 10 minute walk, and Peter and Darla's Guide is very helpful. My two kids (ages 5 and 8) and I stayed for a week and a half at this gorgeous property. We plan to stay there again next year as it quickly became our home away from home. We spent most of our time while at the condo on the lanai watching the waves roll in and the paddlers pass by. We even saw a whale spout from the upstairs bathroom! Every amenity we needed was there. Beds are comfortable, decorations are attractive, great water pressure and a lovely pool close by. We only ate out twice. We bought fresh food at local farmer's markets and ate like royalty with fresh mangos, papaya, avocado garden salad greens and decadent Kona coffee. We way over packed; we did laundry in the washing machine daily, and did not need half of what we brought. We spent several days in the Kohala mega-resort region with friends and preferred our condo to their expensive one! Our location is ideal! We drove to the beach each day (our favorites were Magic Sands and Kahalu'u) There were turtles everywhere and fantastic waves to boogey board on (Thank you for having boogey boards for us to use, Peter and Darla!) We took a boat from nearby Keauhou Bay and went to the luau at the Keauhou Sheraton (neither is more than 5 minutes away), and a wonderful shopping mall is actually walkable up the hill! We got everything we needed from there and attended one of the hula shows which was a highlight for my kids. We went to the volcano overnight, and highly recommend that. We loved The Big Island and know you will not be disappointed at this property!

We really enjoyed our 2 week stay at this oceanfront condo. This fantastic Kona property was just as described. It is updated, clean and comfortable. You literally could not get any closer to the water without actually being in the ocean!!! The bed in the master bedroom was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. Kitchen was well equipped. There was a nice supply of books for your reading pleasure. There is no a/c in the unit but there is a fan in every room and with the windows open at night you get the ocean breeze. The grounds are lush and impeccably kept. Peter and Darla were great to deal with. Peter's responses to our e-mails and phone calls were almost instantaneous. They had a lot of great information about Kona - beaches, restaurants, farmer's market (be sure to go there for fantastic fruits and veggies). Darla was very responsive when we had a problem with the dishwasher and it was immediately fixed. When you stay there be sure to walk over and see the blow hole on the edge of the golf course. It's great fun! Our son got soaked which made for a fantastic photo op ;- ) Wear good walking shoes though - no flip flops - as you have to walk across the lava. Hey, you gotta remember this is a volcanic island. Which is what makes it so unique from all the other Hawaiian Islands. If you have not been here before, be sure to invest in a pair of water shoes with good soles and wear them!. The lava and coral are sharp. The best snorkeling beach on the island is 5 minutes up the road. Be sure to buy some shave ice from the snack truck there for a cool afternoon treat. If you are a scuba diver, the Manta Ray Night Dive is a must. We enjoyed BBQ's and Mai Tai's while we watched the sun set out our back door every night. Save some fish for the resident cat named Tiger. He is an old timer with a limp. If you like cats, feed him and he will join you every evening.Cons: The kitchen and living area are rather small, but for the price it is a good value. You can rent larger units but will pay considerably more for them. If you are looking for a taste of old Hawaii with friendly staff, laid back atmosphere, and up close and personal with the ocean, you will be very pleased here. One caveat - if you have young children, I would NOT recommend you stay here. As the picture shows above, the small patio ends at the ledge of jagged lava and rough waves lapping at the shore. I would definitely stay here again.Thank you Peter and Darla for a memorable family vacation

Our family had an amazing stay at your beach home~ it was absolutely perfect. The location is outrageous, amidst extraordinary environmental and cultural sites that are educational and inspiring for all generations. Just a short walk outside can be a truly amazing experience, the tide pools are world class and so is snorkeling nearby (with incredible opportunities from beginner to more advanced levels of difficulty). Every walk, every outing to swim or snorkel in the ocean I saw rare and threatened species, it was truly beyond description, the purity and clarity of the waters off of Hawaiian coast are outstanding, some of the last best remaining coral in the world is in these sacred waters. This beach house served as an amazing base to this wonder, and we spent a great deal of time exploring other areas as well from outrageous beaches such as Makalawena to the accessible and kid-friendly Hapuna Beach to the extraordinary black & green sand beaches to nearby rainforest valleys and Volcanoes NP. The house is in a great location~ very close to central Kona but also just far enough away from Kona to be a little more private and also a nice location to jump over to Captain Cook from. The sunsets were simply outrageous, shared with the family during a dinner on the oceanfront. The house was very nicely decorated and beautiful and when we were not out exploring or taking in the stunning history of cultural sites of Hawaii we absolutely were in paradise at this house. It is well stocked with beach/Hawaii stuff- chairs, beach items, etc., and the owners clearly have put in a great deal of dedication to make this a truly wonderful experience. I thought the house had the best location of all the units in the complex- it is right across from the pool (which my kids loved) and tennis court area and also in an amazing spot for direct shoreline access (take care on the lava rock but it is amazing to explore down the shore). We absolutely recommend staying here- it was a beautiful, transformative and wildly educational experience for our family.

Owner response: Mahalo Joe for your wonderful comments. We're most happy when our first time guests to Kona and KKSR have the same memorable experience of the Big Island that we had, and continue to have everytime we are back in paradise! Aloha! Peter and Darla

Greetings Peter and DarlaWe had a terrific and rejuvenating trip to the Big Island Dec 1-8 2009. Staying in your condo right on the water was beautiful. We each found time to really relax and be grateful for our surroundings(there were 4 of us). We very much appreciated how attentive the property manager was in communicating the possible need to close the storm frames… and we were happy it never really became necessary too. We were truly amazed at all of the preserved history even on the grounds of the condo … but of course the beaches were the best, great waves to play in, warm days with lots of sunshine, and snorkeling Captain Cook Monument, just recalling our trip brings a warm feeling and your hospitality is a part of that. Mahalo!

Aloha Peter,Just a little note to thank you for the use of the townhouse. We really enjoyed the location right on the ocean and it was just fantastic to wake up in the morning and step out on the patio to watch the waves crash on the rocks, see the outrigger canoes go by and on the last morning even see the spinner dolphins right in front of the house. Snorkeling on the Big Island is great (beautiful coral, fish and lots of turtles) and we love the more original style of the island compared to the high rise buildings and freeways on Oahu.Your house is well stocked and very conveniently furnished with plenty of towels, sheets and beach paraphernalia and it was great to have the pool and tennis court right across. Our 9 year old was in the pool right as it opened at 8 am every day. You might want to have the upstairs toilet checked since it keeps running (if you don’t manipulate the handle a bit) and wasting lots of water.Frits wasn’t able to resolve the internet connection problem with the local support but he used some neighbors wireless once in a while.Mahalo,Frits and Annemiek DenHartog

Our family of five enjoyed our brief stay in this lovely townhouse with its breathtaking view of the ocean from the patio. We loved the fact that this townhouse was close to a shopping center for groceries and to a beautiful beach for snorkeling. The KKSR pool was directly across from our front door and our parking spot was conveniently located outside our door. Peter and Darla were helpful before, during and after our stay. We also appreciated their personal recommendations and lovely decor! Although we did not have a chance to play any tennis, there were plenty of courts to choose from. We highly recommend this clean and lovely condo!

The KSR townhome was perfect for our visit to Hawaii. The location is convenient to the market and shops yet feels remote because of the waterfront patio. The gated entrance adds to the security and you can park directly in front of the unit. Great property.

Peter, Thank you, thank you, thank you for your wonderful home. We vacation in Kona every year but this was the first time we rented a condo vs. hotel rooms. What we found was the relaxation factor grew 100 fold thanks to your lovely home. The kitchen was well stocked, the bed comfy and the views.... well they are spectacular. Being lulled to sleep every night by cool trade winds and the sound of the surf was so relaxing for us. We have already passed on your info to our friends who are grateful for a special place to stay. We will be back!!! It was a pleasure dealing with you! Mahalo for everything! Anna and Michael

My sister and I had a lovely time in this condo! We couldn't get enough of the spectacular views of the ocean from the patio- just feet away from the water. We recommend it highly, and look forward to returning with our families.

Hi Peter, I wanted to write to say thank you for making such a wonderful little condo as KKSR #186 available to travelers like me. The rate charged was absolutely fair and the unit and complex were just fantastic. I can't wait to come back! Falling asleep and waking up with the ocean crashing on the rocks was awesome, as was the fact that meals and drinks could be taken seaside. There is plenty of privacy there too which was really great. I had packed my own binoculars and then found I didn't need to have done that; the condo is so well-stocked. I hope I can rent from you again in the future!

This was a beautiful place to stay, waking up hearing the ocean and the beautiful view was wonderful. They are right next to the community pool which was very convenient. The best snorkel place is just a 5 min drive away! Peter and Darla do a fantastic job of providing recommendations for places to visit and dining places. I would definitely stay here again.

We would highly recommend a stay at KKSR #186. The view could not get any better. We also would like to thank the maintenance guys, they came by through out the week to be sure everything was ok, very friendly! Highly recommend a walk to Jameson Restaurant for lunch and a bottle of wine. The locals and their boogie boards are an exciting event while we enjoyed our lunch. We look forward to our next stays at the same location.

I stayed here in late April/early May of 2007 as part of a large wedding party. While most of the wedding stayed in another Peter and Darla owned property, I got to relax and enjoy beautiful sunsets from my back door! This condo was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the main center of Kona (which is a convenient drive away), and I will most definately consider staying there again should my travels ever bring me back to the islands.

We have just returned from a lovely 10 day vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii where we stayed at the Keauhou-Kona Surf & Racquet Club. Peter and Darla were tremendous to work with as we made our arrangements. Their responses were timely and highly informative. The information they provided to us prior to our arrival on "things to see and do" was outstanding and went a long way to make our holiday memorable. The townhouse was very comfortable; equipped with all of the necessary amentities. We would highly recommend renting accommodations from Peter and Darla. Thank you for a lovely stay in paradise!!!

We definitely found paradise. What a wonderful vacation home, everything we needed was there. Could not get over the view and sounds of the Pacific. Aloha, Hawaiian hospitality is the best!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Peter & Darla's KKSR unit! Sat on the lanai daily and watched whales in the (close) distance. Beds were confortable and the unit is decorated beautifully. We felt very much at home here and were very sorry to leave.... vacation time is far too short!

June 12-16, 2005 Aloha, We enjoyed our time here in Kona! Thanks for the extras like the flashlight, binocs, cooler, & music! Mahalo, The Lears Below are some of our suggestions for future guests :). --There's lots of awesome snoreling around here. We especially liked the beach just about 1/2 mile north of here [Kahalu'u Beach Park}. Green sea turtles can be found right up near the shore even on busy days! It was great!

i've made over 40 visits to hawaii and this was my first time staying at KKSR and booking with peter & darla - my stay was FANTASTIC!!!!! the ambience in the townhouse is very tropical and so relaxing (not to mention how convenient it is to get to the pool for awesome tanning) - it truly is a place where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world and just mellow out. i loved falling asleep to the sound of the surf. i also had the pleasure of meeting peter & darla in person and i have to tell you they are two terrific people! you'll really enjoy your stay here and it's such a pleasure to rent from folks who obviously take pride in their homes and want others to be comfy during their stay. i urge you to take a peek at their other rentals in kona if the townhouse is booked - all of their properties are outstanding.

Dear Peter and Darla, Thank you so much for the use of your wonderful townhome in Kona. We had a lovely stay. We just couldn't get over the waves crashing right outside the back door. Just excellent!! I was wondering if you remember where you got (or what manufacturer makes) the tropical fish light switches and the teak/rattan furniture in this unit? We really are interested in finding these items for decorating our new home. Thanks. Regards, Patty Helgeson

This was our first stay in the Keauhou area – we’ve always stayed closer to town in the past – and we loved the area. We especially enjoyed being able to walk around without having to deal with Alii Drive and the traffic. We discovered the nearby beach and tidepools with their heiaus and turtles, and would have walked over to the hotel for drinks if we hadn’t all been sniffling and hacking with colds and flu. Sitting on the lanai was great for reading, and we found the lending library next to the ever-so-convenient pool/tennis area to augment our selections.

Get ready for spectacular sunsets night after night and the sound of the ocean 24/7. This is a special place and it is furnished with such flair. I stay here whenever I can. I love it like my own!
