Pedro Herreras Casita, Est. 1857

One of the oldest houses in Tubac, this beautiful territorial-style adobe casita, built in 1857, was home to the village’s first postmaster, Pedro Herreras. Lovingly restored and updated by the current owner, a nationally renowned novelist, the Pedro Herreras Casita is a comfortable, romantic retreat, with all the modern conveniences, including central heat and air conditioning, Dish Network satellite service, and wireless internet connection.

Set on a terraced and beautifully landscaped half-acre lot, shared by the owner’s residence, the casita is shaded by old-growth deciduous and fruit trees and is only minutes from the Santa Cruz river and the Anza Trail, offering wonderful walking, hiking, biking, and birding through magnificent old-growth cottonwood and mesquite forests. Less a desert landscape than it is a riparian one, the area is a favorite vacation destination for birders who come to see the incredible diversity and fecundity of both resident and migratory species.

The 750-sq. foot casita is furnished in Colonial-style antique furniture, and includes one bedroom/one bath, original stone-lined working adobe fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen, separate laundry room with washer/dryer, and utility sink, brick patio with gas grill and umbrella-shaded dining table. Although only steps from Tubac’s lively shopping streets, the Pedro Herreras Casita is its own private enclave, offering our guests tranquility and serenity in an Old World atmosphere.

My wife and I chose to stay in this historical adobe for our first trip to Tubac. I can honestly say that it's rare for us to take pictures of the places we have stayed in, come home, and show them to friends. I mean who wants to see pictures of a condo, hotel, or an ordinary home. This place is unique and my wife snapped pictures of everything, I mean everything! Ok I'm a bit of a history geek. An adobe from 1857, wow, and right next to everything else historical about this beautiful town! One minute out the door and you are in the thick of it yet it's very quiet, walled in with a large well designed yard. The owner has done a great job restoring, (and adding a few modern amenities) to this very cool old home. He also is a wonderful host and author. I'm now reading one of his novels, and again am fascinated with his artistry. This is probably one of the best trips we have had in years hands down and the best place we have rented from VRBO! Can't wait to go back!

Colorado Husband and Wife, One week stay and extended two more nights as the casita, weather and Old Town Tubac were wonderful. The casita provided a perfect setting for relaxing, writing, and painting. Very comfortable bed. The owner was most friendly and helpful and respected our privacy. The fireplace was wonderful as the temperature did drop in the evenings (our stay was from January 15-23, 2012.) We plan to return.

This is a great property for a stay in Tubac. Located in easy walking distance of everything Tubac has to offer. The old history house converted to casita was well equiped, clean and pleasant to stay (also quiet). The owner welcomed us and our dog for just a two night stay (not his usual policy) and his dog and ours got along famously in his large enclosed yard. He was not even too dismayed when our dog jumped into his pond containing several large fish. We highly recommend this vrbo property.

My husband and I visited Tubac for the first time last weekend. We have a pet that we like to travel with, so we are always in need of dog friendly places. I was so pleased to find this beautiful casita. The furnishings were so tasteful, the kitchen well-equipped for cooking, the outside places were perfect for morning breakfasts and dinner under the stars. The home is within an easy walk to all the shops & eateries, as well as the Anza Trail. We highly recommend this property for your next stay in Tubac.

Stylish, peaceful, comfortable and fully-equipped. We enjoyed it so much, we extended our stay. The location and setting are unlike any other in Tubac. Top-notch all the way around. v

Staying in this lovely territorial-style casita can feel like you are back in the 1800's, but with all the modern amenities you could want. The owner is the best and gives you your privacy. Lots of hiking, dining and shopping are so close, but it truly is your own cozy enclave, tranquil and serene. I already have plans to return.
