Hawthorne house description
Enjoy the rejuvenating peacefulness of nature at this comfortable retreat. 79 acres of lakes and grassland and 18 acres of adjacent woods make this beautiful spot a great place to relax and recharge. Sunsets are often glorious and the night sky, vast and without light pollution, is magnificent.
The three bedroom, three bath house is spacious and welcoming, with a second large living area for playing games or spreading out projects. The 15 by 35 screen porch is a perfect place to catch a bit of breeze with a cool drink and appreciate the quiet, interrupted occasionally, perhaps, by the loud calls of the Sandhill Cranes who also call this their territory.
Three kinds of woodpeckers, Barred Owls and an osprey are just a few of the frequently sighted large birds who, along with dozens of kinds of small birds might be spotted during a walk in the woods. For more strenuous exercise, there is a private tennis court on site, and the location is convenient to dozens of popular recreation areas. The Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail welcomes hikers, bicyclists, skaters and horseback riders. For kayaking and canoeing the Ocklawaha River, and, a little further, but worth the trip, the salt marshes at Cedar Key, are highly recommended. Swimmers, snorkelers and divers have a wide selection of freshwater options nearby, including Silver Springs and several springs in the Ocala National Forest.
For a culture fix, downtown Gainesville and the University of Florida, with museums, theater and a wide variety of performances are an easy 45 minutes away. Larger concert venues in downtown Jacksonville can be reached in about an hour and a half and the International Drive exit from the Florida Turnpike in Orlando is two hours from the house. St. Augustine’s historic sites and museums are a bit closer than central Jacksonville.
St. Augustine, Orlando and Jacksonville are also destinations for shoppers. Much closer, for those whose interest is antiques, are the shops of Micanopy, which can be reached in a little over half an hour when we share the back road route, which we will.
The house has an attached carport with two bays as well as onsite outdoor parking for four more cars or trailers.

We rented this property for our family members who were traveling down to attend our daughters wedding. They were blown away by the beauty and comfort of this home and the surrounding area. They enjoyed their stay so much that they didn't want to leave. The home and property were well cared for and clean. The owners were wonderful and went way beyond our expectations to assure our stay was an enjoyable one. Their kindness and generosity will not be forgotten. I will be recommending this property to my family and friends. Nearby (in the town of Melrose) there is a small grocery store, a seafood restaurant (cannot remember the name....sorry) and Betty's pizza (excellent pizza), a bank, gas station, Ace hardware, and an antique store and farmers market. On down hwy 21 is a Harvey's supermarket, and a Dollar General. Heading into the next town of Keystone Heights, there is a Hardee's, Mc Donald's, Wendy's, Walgreen's, CVS, Bealls Outlet, Family Dollar, Laredo's Mexican restaurant, Johnny's Bar B Q Restaurant, Subway, Hitchcocks Supermarket, M&S Bank, Capitol City Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, a bait shop and 3 auto supply stores (Napa, Auto Zone, and Discount Auto) .

Comfortable family setting
Comfortable family setting
Our family was celebrating the UF graduation of our niece; the location of house was remote, yet very private. We were very comfortable with the size of the house and the distribution of the rooms- it rained the entire weekend, except for some sunshine on Saturday afternoon- this allowed us to take some beautiful photos by the lake and large oak trees. The owners were gracious enough to allow us some extra check-out time on Sunday, due to the weather. All in all, we commented that it would be nice to return to your home, because of the beautiful surroundings and how comfortable everyone felt. Thank you.

Manager response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! My husband has taken some beautiful photos there as well. Please come back anytime!
My wife, two sons along with my parents, my sister and my two nieces spent a great 4 day weekend together. I just want to say that the home was more than we would have ever expected, as soon as we arrived and walked around to the back of the house we just looked at each other and said this place is beautifull. We would have stayed a year if we could have! Thank you for sharing your house with us and my dogs loved running down to the lake and swiming in the pond. Your home is on our list of repeat vacations. We also had a great meal at Betty's Pizza! very friendly and the food was very good, all around it was a great weekend!!

Great Getaway in a Slice of Heaven
Great Getaway in a Slice of Heaven
I had to bring my dog to the University of Florida Vet school for analysis and was thrilled to stay here instead of a hotel. The photos do not do the home justice! It is a lovely, peaceful remote location with 3 lakes, trees and wildlife all around. Deer, giant cranes, squirrels and an assortment. I loved my hour walks 3 times a day around the lakes with my dogs trained to stay near me but running free. We all had a great time. Short 45 minute drive to Gainesville for vet visits in between. Owners are great. Huge home. I spent most of my time listening to the wind and birds and just watching the light over the great lake to the side of the home with my dogs by my side. I am not disabled, but the home seems to be optimal for someone needing wheelchair or other disability accomodations.

7 of us ladies just stayed at this beautiful home for a long weekend getaway. The pictures do NOT do this home & property justice. We saw a herd of deer drinking from the pond in the early morn--the woods had great paths for walking. The house was beyond spacious and comfortable...There was nothing you could want for in this home. The owner was available had we needed anything and was friendly and kind. We look forward to coming back here...what a wonderful place to regroup, retreat to and enjoy the lovely outdoors, right in your own back yard.

I recently stayed at the Hawthorne lake house with old college friends from UF. The house was wonderful. The description/photos of the property were accurate and the house was clean and well-maintained. There was plenty of room for 3 families. The house is about 30 minutes from Gainesville but it is an easy drive. We made 2-3 trips into Gainesville for the 3 nights were were there which was no big deal. The setup of the house was great for multi-family use. Each bedroom has a bathroom. The decor of the house was a little dated but I think that added to the charm of the house. It felt more like we were staying with a friend or family member than in a rental. Tons of room outside to walk around or for the kids to run. We would definitely stay here again if the chance arises in the future.

Lovely home in a beautiful setting
Lovely home in a beautiful setting
Lovely home in a beautiful setting. Be sure to inquire about the status of the long-burning ground fire nearby, which can result in smoky conditions at the property.

Manager response: For several months an underground fire has been burning on state property a few miles away, and, at times, the smoke blows in our direction. The current status of the fire and resulting smoke is now provided to all who inquire about the property. The problem should be resolved with the arrival of the rainy season.
Perfect little hideaway
Perfect little hideaway
Stayed here for a couple of days while visiting Florida for the Gator Bowl and found this ideal - well away from the hustle of the city and offering a quiet haven of peace and solitude while at the same time being within an easy drive of both Gainesville and Jacksonville. Rooms were very spacious and clean, and the living room offers a fantastic panorama of the lake. The owners are readily available and always willing to help. The extensive grounds and nearby woods would make it ideal for dog owners as well.

Family Christmas Reunion
Family Christmas Reunion
Our large family gathers in Gainesville annually for a Christmas party, and we generally try to find a home rental for 8-10 out of towners. The Long Lake house worked perfectly for us. We planned our granddaughter's baby shower and held it in the main "game room"- the size was wonderful and plenty of tables, folding chairs, linens, etc. We couldn't have been more pleased by the overall layout and location. The owners were professional and courteous and we felt they would address our concerns, had we any. The handicap accessibility was a definite plus for some of the older members of our party. Everyone agreed the home made our Christmas Reunion extra pleasant.

I rented this home for myself and family as we were in Gainesville for our daughter's wedding. The communication with the owner when we rented their home was excellent and we felt very reassured by their responsiveness. The photos on VRBO fairly accurately depict the home and the setting. In fact, although it's about 20 miles east of Gainesville, it's an easy drive and the setting is on a lake and is very private and peaceful. The house has nice sized rooms and a nice layout. I won't nitpick about the general lack of updating/older furnishings and features--I knew about that from the pictures and from my daughter's visit a couple of months prior. But it is dated. Our complaint is that it was not clean. It's not that it didn't pass some unrealistic "white glove test"; it was downright dirty. And, it was obvious that it had not been cleaned properly in a long time. The owner claims that the place was professionally cleaned the day before we arrived. If so, then the owner is getting ripped off. Heavy layers of dust throughout, dirty windows and screens detracted. The bed linens had not been changed, and when we took the sheets off of the mattresses to launder them, there was mouse droppings on top of two of the mattresses (in two different bedrooms), just under the sheets. (Since the day before??) Mouse droppings were also in the closet on the "clean" linens--would you bathe with that?! We laundered the bed linens and towels, and mopped the floors-which took a good part of the day. When we informed the owner about our concerns, the response was unsatisfactory, and included offer of a token refund for the cleaning fee, which we declined. I have rented homes on VRBO before and have had excellent experiences in the past. This one was not.

Manager response: While we welcome any and all comments we were saddened by this review as we were not given any opportunity to fix any problems while the renters were present. They stayed for 5 days and did not let us know of any problems until 1 hour before they checked out. Had we been notified immediately upon the discovery of said problems we would have sent them out to dinner on our dime and fixed any problems we found. We did acknowledge that there could be a mouse problem we were not aware of since this is a house in the woods and offered to refund their cleaning fee. But since we were not given any opportunity to fix the problem and they stayed the entire 5 days we felt that was all we could do. The house was cleaned the day before. And we have since treated for mouse problems and stepped up our pest treatment schedule.
