Just completed a very nice Labor Day weekend at this nicely-appointed house. This was a step up from the average NC mountain rental we are used to, likely in part because this is truly the owner's second home and she obviously spends a good amount of time there. The kitchen is a high point, stocked full with utensils and cooking equipment, including knives that are sharp and work well! The entire house is warmly decorated and bedding was comfortable and more adequate than at first apparent (five beds in total if you count a futon and sleeper sofa). Do check out the "Snowflake Thermometer" over the dining room table -- a fascinating science lesson on a wall poster! My 12-year-old said he wanted to return to West Jefferson on our next trip to the mountains, and stay at this house (he got the ultra-soft ground floor bed).

Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner response: Satisfied guests who want to return make any owner smile! Thanks and do hurry back...

There are rental properties, and then there are clean, well-lighted place rental properties, but I never expected to feel so much at home anywhere as I have this past 4th-of-July week. It's not just that the place was immaculate and so fully as advertised, although it certainly was. It was not even the gorgeous mountain views off the front and back decks (three if you count the one cleverly painted across the storage building) or the fact that the town of West Jefferson is one of my favorite places. It was not just the signs of a life devoted to a love of good food, good drink and entertainment all through the place, although the kitchen offered such cookery options that I ended up wishing I was there for a month and feeding a family. It's that every corner and shelf radiated a life well lived, a family loved and celebrated, exotic places seen and shared, and friendships so obviously deep and resonating. I felt immersed all week in real human warmth, even though I was visiting solo and for the first time at Marian Manor. And my hostess was readily available for any and all questions I had about the many amenities provided, via e-mail, so I now feel that I have not only a new favorite haunt for future stays, but a new and true friend as well. I honestly don't give a lot of A+s, but cheers to Maid Marian; may her Manor stand for many seasons to serve other vistors as well as it has me!

Marion Manor is exactly as you see it on VRBO. The house was absolutely spotless and easily accommodated five people (teens and adults). We were in town to visit an ill relative so it was nice to have a quiet place to stay as well as be able to cook some meals at the house instead of eating out for all meals. Everything in the house is new and worked well-plenty of hot water and great heat as temps were in the teens and twenties. The house has some new furniture and great decorations that we enjoyed looking at. The house is very close to downtown shops and restaurants-walking distance when the weather is warmer. I would recommend Geno's pizza and Smokey Mountain BBQ as well as a trip to the Ashe County Cheese Store. We hope to return for a vacation in the future!

I needed a place to stay for the Blue Ridge Brutal this past weekend and Marion Manor was perfect! Lovely home, and the emails with the owner made you feel as if you were a friend using her mtn home. The towels in the upstairs bathroom felt great to wrap myself up in after the long ride and hot shower. She had an unused spare toothbrush which came in handy, (I left some money for that so you can replace it) I hope to come back for a longer stay next year. It's a good house to ride from for long mtn rides.

I had the pleasure of staying at this cozy residence twice last year. The latest trip of last October as I was moving my Dad across country to his new home in Gulfport, Mississippi. We were very pleased with the accomodations and additions of the front and back decks since our prior visit. My Dad took the downstairs master bedroom and bath just off the living and kitchen area and I had one of the larger bedrooms upstairs with direct access to the full shared bath. We were once again pleased how well we slept in the "air type" bedding as it let's one decide how soft or firm we like our bed. We sure liked and look forward to enjoying again the front and especially the ample rear decking that was added to the home. The kitchen has good appliances should one want to prepare a meal and is open to the living area. Another great thing about staying here is the location which allows one to walk to the lovely town of West Jefferson! Keep in mind though, that the walk back is a bit uphill!! I look forward to my next stay at "Marian Manor"!!

I was able to visit Marian Manor over the summer with my wife. It made us want to come back in the winter, too, which we did for a two night stay. Very cozy and warm inside, though the mountain winds were howling outside. If only our work schedules allowed us to come back and see the fall colors -- maybe we can squeeze in a weekend in October... Great place, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is only a few miles up the road!

Marian thought of everything, and I could not have asked for more. I look forward to returning this summer with my grandkids. They are sure to love the backyard. 100 percent recommended!

My husband and I loved staying at Marian Manor! Gorgeous views, great location, and very welcoming inside. The home is spacious and cozy. Perfect for curling up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book after a day of West Jefferson adventuring. We had such a great time staying here this winter, we are already planning a trip this summer. : )

Spent several enjoyable days at Marian's last summer. The easy walk to downtown West Jefferson was so convenient. Lots of quaint stores and good eateries. Such a wonderful mountain town. Spent several hours playing with my Granddaughter out on the deck. You will not be disappointed in the town or your accomodations.

                      Year Purchased: 2009

About the owner: Since Hurricane Katrina I am a Disaster Assistance Employee deployed in the aftermath of disasters. Formerly I was a counselor in private practice, consultant & trainer and continue to own and manage the first B&B in Ocean Springs, MS, Oak Shade Bed & Breakfast. My four adult children are responsible, self-supporting, environmentally conscious professionals with exceptional credit scores. I am understandably proud of them! I am a high energy, physically active beyond mid-life woman who loves to read, write & travel. Last year I visited the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Ephesus and Kusdasi. As a young woman I worked as a tour guide in Turkey and my first child was born in Ankara. With the single exception of North Dakota, I have visited all 50 states, traveled in more than two dozen countries and lived in four. Originally from Asheville, the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains draw me in, hold me in their embrace and always, I consider the NC mountains my spiritual home.

Why the Owner Chose West Jefferson:
Eventually I may move from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to live closer to my daughter, her partner & my grandchildren. Until then I wanted to have a rental and mountain get-away for myself where I may putter, enjoy time alone and do some creative writing. The outdoor options for sport and recreation are fantastic, and there are fascinating cultural, natural and human-made sites to visit. A walking tour of the 15 murals in West Jefferson done by local artists is a 'must-do.' Nearby you may want to enjoy The Church of the Frescoes OR impressive performances sponsored by the Arts Council OR monthly outdoor music events at the community park below the library as well as public tennis courts, a covered picnic area and a children's playground with a creek running through it. There are also annual events that draw thousands of visitors to West Jefferson area beginning with Merlefest (last weekend in April) followed by Christmas in July (first weekend), the August Fiddlers Convention and others. Two hours' drive could find you in Asheville, Winston-Salem, Hickory, or the quaint town of Damascus, VA. Each season offers unique, special stimulation to the discerning traveler interested in stretching her/his life experience. I cannot overstate the beauty; you simply have to see for yourself!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Quiet, peaceful, walking distance to top of Mt. Paddy & downtown West Jefferson; close to Mount Jefferson St. Park & the Blue Ridge Parkway. Two fabulous decks to enjoy both sun and moon showings as well as Mt. Paddy and Mt. Jefferson. Exceptional local library--visible from back deck of Marian Manor-- walking distance to the West Jefferson Coffee House, en route to library. Also close by you may enjoy Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mtn., Tweetsie Railroad, several gem mines (to pan for rubies!), ski resorts, or Linville Caverns, Falls & Gorge. You may opt to bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail, formerly an old railroad bed converted from 'Rails to Trails.' Exceptional restaurants in West Jefferson area beckon every palate and pocketbook: Frasers, Sweet Aromas, Geno's, Shatley Springs, Mountain Aire, Tamales, Black Jack's, Smoky Mountain Barbecue and the Hillbilly Grill. The New River--the oldest river in North America--offers tubing, kayaking, canoeing as well as fishing, wading or simply sitting by the stream. Come see for yourself. There is something for everyone and you are likely to return again and again.
