Rustic Luxury on the Beach!
- Minimum stay:N/A

This classic beach house sits on a tidal pond with Crescent Beach, the most beautiful beach on the island, at the end of your driveway. You don’t really need a car, as it is just a short walk to the ferry dock and town, with its restaurants and shops. Recreated from a former surf shop called Claudia's Surf City, the downstairs is spacious and airy. A rustic open kitchen/living/dining area with a gas Vermont Castings fireplace opens out onto covered porch and decks with water views all around. Upstairs the master bedroom and en suite bath look out to sea.
Two other cozy bedrooms share a separate bath with clawfoot tub. Grounds are complete with lily pond, lawns for bocce, picnic table, garden, water toys and boats, goldfinches and pheasants. No TV! Laze in hammocks indoors or out and rediscover peace and love. Sleep to the sound of the waves.

Claudia's Surf City is the perfect beach vacation house in the perfect location on Block Island. It is well appointed, well maintained and the owner is attentive to the needs of renters. If you choose to rent this house, take the time to appreciate the details that have been lovingly crafted and fine-tuned over time. Try not to get addicted to the ecstasy of the outdoor shower (good luck with that!). If you let it, Surf City will envelop you in a warm, comforting cocoon of stress relief, from which you will emerge refreshed even after only a few days (we suggest a minimum of 7 nights for full effect). If we never make it back here, we will remember its charms forever. That's our review and we're sticking to it!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, pet owners, girls getaway, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Tnx! It's always nice to have our place appreciated by special people.

I've been going to this house for a lot of years because, well, its location is Amazing, on a spit of land between ocean and bay. The feel is Urban Surf Funk with Yard Sale overtones. And yes, it has no TV. Which when you have kids, is a really good thing. So I can work on line on my computer in the early AM and turn it off the rest of the time. Read one of the million or so books. Walk to town if I want. And take a nap in the hammock if I want. Bring my dog. Go to the beach, or my kids can go alone (it's ok, they're old enough). And feel like I'm a hundred million miles away. That's why I keep going back--so keep off my weeks!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, pet owners, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Off season means no people, no traffic, beautiful beaches. A calm serene place and the perfect spot to have a REAL vacation. The water is warm and the sunsets intense! I would recommend this spot to anyone! Walk to town, across from the beach. Water water everywhere!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My stay at this cozy cottage was magical. Views of the water came in from every direction. The pictures do show a lot of charm but the ocean views were not featured and should have been. You are a very short walk down the drive, cross the street and you are right on the beach. The views of the ocean are fabulous from the windows and porch that are not reflected in the photos listed. You are also a short lovely walk to the the quaint center of the island town. I highly recommend checking into this cottage if you're looking for a relaxing vacation with views of the ocean to the front, a tidal pond out back, and a fresh water pond with lily pads at your door step. I obviously love the water that surrounds the rustic adorable cottage. A must in my opinion.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1980
About the owner: A former journalist (People, Life) and now vacation rental owner on Block Island, once known as Claudia's Island, Claudia Glenn Dowling has honed her bedmaking skills and seldom travels without a truckload of substandard chairs. Google me at Claudia's Surf City or under my name.
Why the Owner Chose Block Island:
I ran a surf shop, Claudia's Surf City, in the summer, but I realized that I could make more money renting houses than surfboards. With my brother, a skilled carpenter, I built the surf shop out, purposely putting in amenities like lavish bathrooms and driftwood stair railings. The first season, 2000, was a great success. The next year, we added porches. We have continued to improve Claudia's Surf City every year while retaining its quirky quality. It is now the sine qua non of a classic beach house.
