Welcome to Elk Branch Lodge, a sprawling two story country home that easily accommodates family reunions, group gatherings, or romantic getaways for two. The Lodge is not just someone's second home in a busy commercial development. It is a special private place in the country, nestled in the mountains surrounded by thousands of acres of forest. It is also a working horse farm with pastures and wooded trails. There is plenty of room inside for everyone to come together or to spread out into smaller groups. The natural setting will draw you outdoors where the wildlife, mountains and sunsets will work their magic on you.
In addition to the many multi family/friends groups that we host each year, we also regularly accommodate church retreats and corporate outtings. The spacious grounds and decks provide ample room for group discussions, team building or quiet reflection.
The lodge is an easy drive from four National Parks and the historic villages of Berkeley Springs, Shepherdstown, Charles Town and Martinsburg. Unique diners and restaraunts, artisan shops , antiques, farmer's markets and even a casino round out the local attractions. We will help you discover whatever peaks your interest.
Bring your mountain bike, canoe, fishing rod, hiking gear, and binoculars, and enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer. We have a well marked trail system for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Adjacent public land offers miles hiking trails and a 205 acre fishing and canoeing lake. Local streams and rivers provide some excellent fishing and canoing opportunities and whitewater rafting and tubing is available in the nearby Shenandoah River.
We are a short country drive from Interstate 81 and less than two hours from the Baltimore/DC area.

We chose to rent this farmhouse for our annual Cabin Fever family weekend because it provided enough space and was in close enough proximity for our families to make the drive from Columbus, Slippery Rock, PA and Front Royal Virginia. The house and property exceeded my expectations. It is a very beautiful and private getaway. The house is perfect for adults and children as it provides so many different gathering areas throughout and around the house. We had such an amazing weekend and Larry the owner kept us stocked with firewood and made sure that we had all that we needed. I cannot wait to go back!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

We had our 4th Annual "Girls Weekend Away" (we only had 5 adults but this easily accommodates large parties) at the lodge and had a great time. We arrived early but the cleaning crew had already been and gone, so we were able to get settled in with plenty of time to enjoy our entire first day. We spent most of our long weekend cooking (well stocked kitchen), eating at the huge table, relaxing in the awesome hot tub and around the fire pit and catching up from the last year. The lodge has plenty of room for those who need some alone time (naps??) and the grounds are beautiful. We got a lot of use out of the iPod docking station and because of the remote area, were able to open the windows and enjoy the music at the fire pit without bothering anyone. There are a ton of board games to choose from and a good selection of movies. Great to wake up in the morning to the horses waiting at the fence for a snack. We dubbed the elk "Hans" and he was our official mascot. He made for great pictures to bring home. The weather was perfect and the nights were incredibly quiet (cicadas, peepers and coyotes notwithstanding). Definitely the place to go if you want to just relax and avoid neighbors, noise or distractions. The lodge is rustic and remote enough that I would definitely come back with my own family for a getaway that far exceeds traditional "camping" but doesn't make me feel like I'm at a hotel or touristy place or that I need to have plans 24/7. Our only offsite adventure was to go horseback riding in Capacon State Park which I highly recommend to anyone that likes that type of thing. The scenery was amazing and we the deer were hanging out right near the trails - kids (old enough to ride) would get a huge kick out of it. This was a perfect location to get away from it all, enjoy nature, catch up with friends and simply relax. My only caution would be if you have any guests that have difficult maneuvering stairs, the flight up may be a little tricky, but the numerous couches/sofas downstairs can be used as bedding (we personally didn't have this issue). Last, but most importantly, Larry was awesome. Very responsive and helpful before, during and after we arrived. Exactly the type of owner you hope to be able to rent from. I would love to return in the fall.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Dawn, It was great to meet you and your group. It was very obvious that you guys were in a nice state of relaxation. I love to see that transition as people get settled into the lodge lifestyle. I look forward to your return. Larry

We had an excellent time at the Lodge! Five adults and 4 young boys all came and we always felt like we had plenty of room. We loved the hot tub and the open fireplace where we spent most nights by the fire playing boards games and having so much fun. The kitchen was very well equipped and we made huge dinners and desserts everyday. Kids loved feeding the horses apples and carrots. Also enjoyed hiking in the trails around the house. We took a day trip to Washington and visited some of the Smithsonium museums. It a good day trip if you have a rainy day. Besides that we were happy to just relax around the house all week. The house was clean and decorated very nicely for the holiday season. It would be nice if there was a washer/dryer at the house, but we were able to go to the local laundrymat to do laundry as well. Other than that everything was fantastic!!! Larry was excellent and more than willing to help us out with any requests. I would definately recommend the Lodge to anyone looking for a country get away for peace and tranquility. We are planning our next visit back already!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My two sisters and I, along with our families, rented this property for our family vacation. There were 13 people in all and there was plenty of room. There were enough beds for everyone, plenty of towels and blankets and we loved the two living rooms since one group liked to play games at night and the other just wanted to relax and watch the television. It definitely is a great place to just get away as there really is nothing around it. We went fishing up the road at the lake, drove into Harper's Ferry, Berkley Springs and Martinsburg and just had a great time. Larry was available every day and was a very nice person to talk to. I would come back again!!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the nice comments Kimberly. I am so glad you all had such a good time. I especially enjoyed the youngsters and getting the daily updates on your activities. I hope you get to return soon. Larry

My sister lives right outside of Washington DC and my husband and I live in Cleveland. We use this VERY lovely place to meet and spend time together. We bring my mom and dad with us and there's still plenty of room left for more guests. We have made many day trips during our stays to historical sites and it is only a short drive to the Washington DC area. During our stays Larry could not be more accomodating to our every need. The Lodge is very clean and comfortable and just rustic enough to make it feel like a cabin in the woods but with all the comforts of home. I would DEFINITELY recommend Elk Branch Lodge to family, friends and co-workers without any hesitation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Marie, Always a pleasure to see you and you beautiful family visit the lodge. I especially enjoy seeing the big harvest table covered with delicious Italian cooking.

I spent last Independence Day with Alison (below) and 17 other friends from all over the country. When I look back on that weekend, I remember sunshine and bonfires, hiking and group dinners, Larry and his welcoming nature. It really defined summer for me. I cannot recommend the lodge enough. It's huge, with plenty of beds and bedrooms, a kitchen with all the pots and pans you need, and great porches to lounge around on and read books or visit with friends. For me, a city dweller, it was the perfect retreat. I can't wait to get back there this year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Anna, I look forward to your return. I love to see groups like yours take advantage of so many of the attractions the Lodge and the local area has to offer. Remind me to get more pictures of you guys this summer.

My son, wife, and two grandboys, and my niece, husband, and their two young girls from Washington, DC joined my family at the Lodge for a wonderful fall weekend. The children had a great time running around the house and fields, rolling hula hoops down the long drive, and feeding the horses and pony. There were trails right outside the lodge leading into gorgeous wooded areas, crossing little creeks, that were perfect nature hikes for our young families. The more industrious guys worked up an appetite jogging up the lane into the wildlife management area. No cars in sight anywhere! The dining table easily fit all 12 of us and there was lots of room upstairs, two separate wings, for the family groups to spread out, which is nice when you have children with different nap routines. We went to nearby Orrs Farm Market for enormous pumpkins, apples, and got up close, like right up next to the fence, with the buffalos. My three year old grandson summed up the weekend experience when we were loading the cars to leave Sunday afternoon. He slipped back into the house, sat down in front of the fireplace, and took off his shoes. Twice! He didn't want to leave and neither did the rest of us. We'll definitely be back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

I spent the Fourth of July at Elk Branch Lodge last year with 18 friends, and I have to say, it was the best weekend ever. The house is huge and welcoming. The land is beautiful and its proximity to the state park was great. We spent the weekend toasting marshmallows, lighting sparklers, hiking, chilling by the amazing bonfire and generally basking in the overall awesomeness of the house. Also Larry is the coolest and made us all feel very much at home. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I'm reserving the Fourth again in advance b/c I need to recreate that weekend. Just awesome! Woo!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Alison, it was great hosting your group. Seeing you guys having so much fun was very rewarding. I look forward to you all returning this summer. I will be sure to have a nice bonfire ready.

For Christmas of 2010 we visited our family in Hedgesville, West Virginia. Due to a lot of family coming in we decided to look for a rental nearby which led us to this wonderful lodge. We (my husband and two children) arrived late in the evening to open the door to fires on the stoves and in the fireplace with the Christmas tree lit. It looked amazing! We met up with Larry, manages the property, in the morning and he showed us city folk how to keep the fires going and where the wood was kept. There was plenty of wood for the whole week. The lodge was really nice and the pictures do not do it justice. We did not want to leave! We ended up having another family of ours stay with us too, a family of 7. So in total we had 11 people! And we were still comfortable. There were plenty of beds, and the kitchen was stocked with pots, pans, utensils and everything. There was a Food Lion about 20 minutes away so we could do a grocery shopping. Other than that we just relaxed and enjoyed looking at the beautiful scenary. There were several horses in the front and all around was just trees and country. Christmas morning it snowed, which was a real treat since the kids never seen snow before. To the side of the lodge there was a frozen pond which was covered in snow. The kids spent hours there!! This is one of the best trips ever if you are looking for a quiet getaway or a Christmas in the mountains. We will definately come back! It was a little hard visiting family and having to leave the lodge, it was just so nice and comfortable we could have just stayed there for the whole vacation!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was so wonderful to have young families with kids at the lodge for Christmas. When I looked out the window Christmas morning and saw the snow coming down I just smiled and said, 'yes, right on cue'. Seeing people enjoy themselves at the lodge is so rewarding. It inspires us to focus on the all the extras that make a visit special. We want everyone who visits the lodge to have the best experience possible.
