Westcliffe cabin description

Property Description:
You are invited to share this warm and inviting space, called the “Loder Lodge”, now entering its fourth generation of use by family and friends. This cozy, 710 square foot, authentic cabin with its 1940’s period log siding, has evolved over the years. It had no indoor plumbing and used an outhouse until it was renovated in 1999. It now has a full galley kitchen and bathroom with a shower. The dining area, with its quant picnic bench style table, looks out to Lake De Weese. The living room is rich in texture, with a large stone fire place, rough cut ceiling log beams, and knotty pine paneling with 3 large picture windows that frame stunning views of the lake and mountain range.
The Lodge hosts one small bedroom with a double bed. Bunk beds and a queen sized hide-a-bed couch, located in the living room, add sleeping options. All together the cabin can sleep six. Furnishing are comfortable and in keeping with the integrity of the cabin’s era and history.
The atmosphere of the cabin is simple, yet the very structure lures you in a magical connection between the intimacy of the indoors and the vast natural beauty that surrounds it just outside. In keeping with its retreat-like heritage, the Loder Lodge has no internet connection, or TV, and only a small stereo system with CD/tape and radio. There is a phone for local connection but no long distance. Currently, cell phone coverage requires a part way drive toward Westcliffe. For relaxed, old fashioned enjoyment, there are books, cards, games and puzzles. However, the best “entertainment” is the togetherness and storytelling that the space fosters among its guests.
It is perfect for personal hermitage too, a quiet place to reflect and renew your energies. If you do nothing more than watch the ever changing moods of the weather, from the purple mountain mornings to passing afternoon shower, and awesome shape shifting cloud formations to gorgeous sunsets to star gazing, you would come away feeling refilled and refreshed. But, of course, there is more.
If you are here on the Fourth of July, you can just take the lawn chairs outside and watch the Fireworks which are set off from the beach right in front of you. Amazing! You are just steps away from the lake with access to all it offers from watching the wild life including pelicans, blue herons, ducks and hawks.
Then there are the mountains: 29 of them over 12,000 feet, just beckoning you to drive the 20 minutes to the nearest trail head and begin hiking the hundreds of miles of trails. Or, you may prefer to go by bike, horseback or ATV where permitted. There are many high lakes and streams for fishing, forests, fields and tundra that support abundant wild life and in season hunting. If you get more adventurous there is backpacking and technical climbing. It goes on and on!
Less than an hour away you can white water raft down the Arkansas River or visit the spectacular Royal Gorge, or climb through Bishop’s Castle made by one man’s own hand. More than an hour away is the Great Sand Dunes to the south and Cripple Creek via the scenic Phantom Canyon drive to the north.
Location:
The Loder Lodge, 5 miles north of Westcliffe, is set among other cabins, old and new, in what is loosely called “Lake DeWeese Resort', named when it drew families from the cities for the summers with different amenities in mind. While it looks nothing like a resort as we typically know it today, what it does have are very friendly neighbors, some vacation homes, and a number of “year rounder’s.”
Westcliffe, with all of its old west, small town charm and diversity, is still an active ranching and farming community with rodeos and parades down Main Street, June through October. Westcliffe is also now an active artisan community with many galleries, live theater events, craft fairs, and music festivals. Wonderful restaurants, shops, cafes, and flea markets abound.
Westcliffe is a scenic 75 mile drive southwest of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs with Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods and a host of other tourist attractions.
Come and enjoy the hospitality of this wonderful hideaway. You will want to return as the family generations have done to do more of the things you have enjoyed and explore the things you have yet to do.

              Year Purchased: 1953

About: My family started vacationing at Lake DeWeese in 1948 first camping by the dam then buying land and putting a trailer on it then buying this cabin just up the hill. Since then my children and grandchildren have come to 'carry on the tradition' out of love for this special place that has so many wonderful memories and ones yet to to be made.
