My wife and I, and my sister and brother-in-law have spent a week at Bayberry for each of the last eight summers. We are all educators, and our stays here are always the highlight of our summer vacation.Twenty-five hundred characters is not nearly enough space to describe everything we love about this place. My wife loves to cook, and the open kitchen and dining area allows us to entertain the 11 family members who spend the same week in Pemaquid. Bayberry is always cool and comfortable, with its high ceiling and loft and its very efficient ceiling fan. On especially cool evenings, we enjoy sitting by the fire in the lovely stone fireplace. The screened back porch provides beautiful views of Pemaquid Harbor, and opportunities to spot eider ducks, cormorants, kingfishers, great blue herons, and, if we are particularly lucky, even harbor seals. Both of the bedrooms are cozy and airy, and appointed with beautiful antique furniture. Beds are very comfortable. Although we trade bedrooms each summer, with each couple eagerly anticipating their time in the back bedroom where we wake up to harbor views, we have never been disappointed in the middle bedroom either. Bayberry is amazingly well-cared for and we always find it spotless upon arrival. I don't even mind washing the dishes when I'm here: Window boxes beyond the sink contain flowers that often attract hummingbirds. There is a large, grassy area just steps from the front door that is ideal for playing horseshoes, bocce, or wiffle ball. A very short stroll down the dirt road leads to a boat launching area, and a pier and dock where children can try their luck at catching little crabs. The Colonial Pemaquid restoration and the unmatched beauty of Pemaquid Beach are both about a quarter of a mile away. Many people, especially those with smaller children, enjoy the charms of the equally nearby "Little Beach." Pemaquid Point, with its picturesque lighthouse famously depicted on the reverse of the Maine state quarter, is a short drive or bike ride away. Seafood lovers experience nirvana at such only-in-Maine waterside venues as Shaw's Fish and Lobster Wharf, the Pemaquid Fishermen's Co-op, Muscongus Bay Lobster Co., and the Round Pond Fishermen's Co-op. Groceries are available locally at C.E. Reilly's and Dee's Variety in New Harbor. Some of the best breakfasts we've ever eaten have been served at The Cupboard, which is within easy walking distance of Bayberry. I'm really looking forward to next summer!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We enjoyed our stay at the bayberry cottage as we know area well and the many activities available as tennis, hiking and kayaking. The cottage was very clean and had been renovated quite tastefully in keeping with the old tradition. The description of the property was very accurate and the location was quiet and peaceful with a charming view from the screened porch. We had prompt attention to assist us in connecting the internet and everything was well described in the folders in the cottage. We did some day trips to Damariscotta and Boothbay for shopping, restaurants and kayaking. The botanical gardens at Boothbay were fantastic-all in all a great holiday.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

My wife, daughter and myself had the pleasure of staying at the Bayberry Cottage this summer. The cottage was immaculate, bright and deceptively spacious. My daughter loved the sleeping loft. The other two bedrooms were quaint and the beds were very comfortable. The open floor plan was perfect for us - we could chat while we cooked and the kitchen area while small, was completely functional and included everything you would need to cook up a lobster feast (or any other meal). The bathroom was very nice, with a great shower and lots of space, especially considering the size of the cottage. The screened-in porch was wonderful - it was large and had nice, comfy chairs; the perfect spot to begin the day with our coffee and to end the day listening to the boats return to the harbor. The short walk to the private sitting rock and the communal dock were well worth the minimal effort. The whole area has a peaceful air about it that is great for those looking for a quiet get-away. The owners of the cottage were a delight to work with, they made us felt at home and their pride in the cottage was apparent from the way the place was maintained. There were a couple of beaches within a mile of the cottage, one free and more of a rocky shoreline, the other a small, but very nice sandy beach that charges a small fee. There is a little general store nearby and a larger chain store about 10 miles away that has a little better selection. The Pemaquid Lighthouse is about a seven-minute drive and the gift shop adjacent to it serves the best breakfast - you have to try to the Eggs Pemaquid (eggs benedict served with crab instead of canadian bacon) out of this world good. A great lunch and dinner option is Shaw's - which is right on the water and serves up the freshest seafood and reasonable prices for a shoreline dinner. The rustic nature of the place is part of the charm, but there are more fancy dining options nearby - the cottage owners provide a great guide book at the cottage leading you to all kinds of interesting points of interest. The cottage is perfect for a couple or a small family looking for a peaceful get-away near the water. New Harbor is a quiet, working-class coastal town, so if you are looking to be at the center of excitement with lots of nightlife, be advised. But if you are looking for a charming place to find some serenity - and some of the best seafood ever - Bayberry is just the spot.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Bayberry Cottage is wonderful. It is ideally located on the Pemaquid pennisula with spectacular scenery all around. The cottage is meticulously maintained. It truly gives you an all around Maine experience. If you wish you can stay right in New Harbor and have plenty to do. There is a very nice beach less than a mile away. There are great eateries nearby. You also have the option of traveling South to Boothbay or North to Camden. The Botanical Gardens in Boothbay are the best we have seen anywhere. The owners (John & Marilyn) provide a detailed booklet on recommended activities. This is extremely useful in maximizing best use of time during your stay. We hope to visit again sometime in the near future.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

For once the photographs of a vacation property do not gloss over the reality. Bayberry Cottage really is as charming as it looks. Heron Cove is a wonderfully peaceful spot. At night you can hear the water lapping against the shore as well as the call of various coastal birds. With the dock and the grass & rock waterfront right next to the cottage, it is a great place to take a dip, watch the crabs (big and small) scuttling along the bottom of the bay or launch kayaks. You can walk to Pemaquid Beach or Fort William Henry in 5 minutes from Bayberry. You can also walk, or kayak, to The Contented Sole and dine over the water on their wide dock. The views are spectacular. New Harbor itself is very beautiful. It is exactly how you imagine Maine to be. Its not bustling with tourists, nor is it dead. So many things to do and see and not once did we have to line up. Highlights of our recent trip included: the Hardy Boat trip to see puffins (complete with tour guide from the National Audubon Society); evening time at Pemaquid lighthouse and (after a short drive around to Boothbay) the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. If you have kids under 10, they will love the children's garden there. Its huge, beautiful, and has lots to do to entertain the kids. We spent 2.5 hours just in the Children's Garden with our 5 year old. Bayberry Cottage is a great place for either a tranquil or outdoorsy vacation. The cottage is very well cared for and it is clear John and Marilyn take great pride in the place. As you turn the key and enter the cottage for the first time, you will know you have made the right choice to stay there.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Beautiful, clean, spacious, I felt at home the second I walked in! Great location, close to village and on the water. Heron Cove is quiet but still feels safe and not too secluded. Owners and rental agent are a pleasure to work with. Perfect vacation spot!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We had a great start to our New England holiday at Bayberry. We couldn't fault the cottage - it's spacious, clean, well-equipped and very comfortable. It's in a lovely position, with beautiful views over the water from the covered deck and one of the bedrooms. We enjoyed the excellent beach, which is only a short walk away. The whole area is delightful, with so many things to do and lots of excellent eating places. We certainly hope to come back to Bayberry another year.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We concur with each of the other reviews and then some. You feel immediately at home in your home away from home.Clean, well maintained and furnished. We never had to pre-clean or do minor maintenance as at other rentals, These are areas that we notice since we have rental properties ourselves. The closeness to the harbor and ability to launch your kayaks and keep them at the shore line during your stay is a big plus. Biking, running or walking in the area is easily done at any level you may choose. We have been coming to the Pemaquid area for 40 years and look forward to returning again this summer to this cottage. Bayberry cottage certainly earns it s name as a delightful intimate cottage situated along the picturesque banks of Pemaquid Harbor. You will be immediately impressed as you step inside your home away from home to find a spacious yet cozy space filled with warm personal touches. Beautifully designed in the true essence of a "cottage" are richly exposed rafters, a bow shaped skylight, a modern loft with extra bedding, a screened in porch with lovely views across the bay and an eye-catching stone fireplace. Put your blackberry, cell phone, laptop and any other electronical device you tucked into your bags away. You need nothing more than to sit out on the porch and enjoy the views of lobster boats and sailboats dotting the bay, the sounds of nature around you and all the comforts of home at your fingertips. My sister and I chose this spot to "getaway from it all" and we most certainly accomplished our goal. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, the warm charm of the locals, lazy sleep in mornings in our comfortable warm beds, walks along the shore, fireside chats, coffee on the porch, woodwinkle, and of course, the Lobster! We couldnt get enough of it. If you enjoy nature and shellfish, you came to the right spot. Pemaquid Coop was indeed a special treat. King Eiders Pub in town also a quick favorite. Thank you Marilyn and John for making our stay a very special and memorable trip. We look forward to returning to Bayberry Cottage.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

We have 2 young boys (ages 3 and 5) and we had a great time at Bayberry. The kids loved all the various activities, including the lighthouse, the nearby beach and the fort, but of course the highlight was walking across the road and feeding the neighbor's horses and Jake the donkey. We loved the location and the cottage itself is beyond charming. We expect we'll return several times!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: We are two active professionals. failures at retirement, attempting to spend as much time as possible in our beloved New Harbor. We purchased Bayberry Cottage in 2000 and renovated and expanded it. When we moved to the other side of town, we couldn't bear to sell Bayberry - nor would our children let us! When our children all decide to visit us at the same time and fill the house, we go and stay at our beloved Bayberry!
Why the Owner Chose New Harbor:
We discovered New Harbor 38 years ago while on a camping trip to Boothbay. We immediately packed up our gear and moved to a campground in New Harbor. We returned year after year, first camping, then staying at rentals. After all these years we still marvel at the beauty of New Harbor and still enjoy its fabulous amenities. We keep meeting more and more folks who had the same experience. After having explored so much of the Maine coast, we just knew we had stumbled into a very special place - and we were right!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Immense natural beauty, lobsters right off the boat, ever changing harbor activity. Watch the tides change and the eiders, cormorants, great blue herons, and kingfishers going about their activities. Many find it difficult to tear themselves away from the property. Choose from attractions and distractions galore, or just relax on the porch.
