Enjoy what nature has to offer in this quiet but active resort island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The atmosphere is a relaxed one yet there is an extensive amount of activities for vacationers. From surf, bay or offshore fishing to kayaking, sunbathing, bird watching, hiking and biking nature trails, picking clams, oysters and crabbing for the famous blue crabs in the surrounding waters. The Island is home to many well-known painting and decoy-carving artists and has a variety of craft shops for browsing and taking home souvenirs.
La Maison Bleue, is a contemporary home centrally located 1/2 mile to downtown and 2 miles to the Assateague bridge and beach road. It is nestled in a quiet setting overlooking a pond teeming with ever changing wildlife: blue and green herons, mallards, ibis, kingfishers, skimmers, killdeer and more. You may witness a brood of wood ducks dropping from the nest guided to safety by their mother. Two screech owls have nested in one of the two nest boxes in past years. The colorful kingfisher visits the pond throughout the day for his meals. We often see deer strolling around the pond from our living area.
Our favorite room in the house is the gourmet kitchen with upgraded amenities: SS double oven, double dish drawer, side by side refrigerator and 5 burner gas cook top inviting you to create your delectable recipes while sipping on your favorite beverage. A deer might be in sight waiting patiently to cross the yard to the safety of thick woods in the back of the house. French doors lead to a well appointed screened porch. Great for dining, reading or just observing wildlife in and around the pond.
Sunbathe in privacy on the large exterior deck or relax on the ground level patio in the shade of trees. Refresh yourself in the enclosed outdoor hot shower after a day at the beach. Prepare your catch of the day at the cleaning station and BBQ your favorite food or steam fresh caught crabs, clams and oysters on a large gas burner. Roast marshmallows in the chiminea and reminisce about the day’s events while being serenaded by the sounds of nature’s creations.
The spacious and bright living room has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the pond giving a feeling of outdoor living. Relax on very comfortable modern leather sofas and enjoy your favorite show on a flat screen HDTV/VCR.
The open floor plan connects the living room with a formal dining room. Dim the chandelier lights and enjoy a memorable dinner with your loved ones while listening to your favorite music with our docking station for your electronics.
The Master bedroom has a private bathroom with shower, a closet organizer for your belongings. Dream in a California king size bed fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets or read in a comfy leather chair. A lovely crib is also in the room for your infant child. In the morning you will likely awake to the quacking of Mallard ducks waiting for a handout of corn. Corn is provided in a container under the house.
The guest bedroom has a queen size bed with a firm mattress for comfortable sleeping and a closet organizer.
The study/bedroom features two twin size beds and a queen size convertible futon bed to accommodate all guests. The corner desk for your laptop will facilitate keeping in touch with friends and family with Wi-Fi access. A bookcase is filled with books and games for your pleasure.
The second full bathroom is shared with these two bedrooms.
The full size washer and dryer will serve you well at your convenience.
Keep cool with covered parking under the house. The spacious area around the house can accommodate several vehicles, a boat trailer or kayaks.
A secured storage room under the house is for your bikes and other personal belongings. Crabbing lines and nets are there for your use

Why the Owner Chose ChincoteagueAs youngsters, Richard and I were raised near the water. Richard from Salem, MA and I from a small fishing village on the Brittany coast of France. Growing up, we both learned to fish, crab, clam and discover the treasures of the sea. While residing in the Washington, DC area, we spent most weekends camping at Maddox Campground. We both love the peaceful, island life in Chincoteague. After purchasing a building lot our dear Mennonite friends from PA helped make our dream house, "La maison bleue", come true. The house was completed in 2004. We have divided our retirement living between Chincoteague and Europe, the best of both worlds. We were privileged to become grandparents and our priority now is to be near Laurel, our 3-year-old, granddaughter living in San Diego, CA. We treasure our new life in San Diego near our family but plan to make return visits to Chincoteague Island.
The Unique Benefits at this HouseLa maison bleue is centrally located on Chincoteague island, within ½ mile to downtown, local supermarket, shops and galleries and 2 miles to the Assateague Island bridge. The 3 mile ride to the beach is a delight for nature lovers. Sika deer are often seen grazing on the road side, delmarva squirrels, herons, egrets, ibis, ducks, gulls, shore birds and others can be spotted along the way. The famous wild ponies are mostly observed in the marshland from the road side. Bike the 3.5 mile wildlife loop, you may see a pair of eagles that nest nearby. Cross the beach road to the Woodland trail where ponies can be seen grazing on the marshland or continue to the beach. Walk to the Chincoteague Pony Centre on Chicken City Road, get acquainted with the ponies and enjoy the activities and shows. Explore the Island of Chincoteague while riding an electric street cart or a scooter. Play miniature golf in the evening after a hot day at the beach. Challenge a friend on the tennis court or shoot basket balls at Memorial Park. You can fish or crab from the park, great for children. Enjoy a picnic in a designated area with lovely views of the Lighthouse and the bay. Dine and savor the local seafood at one of the nearby restaurants. Do not leave the island without a visit to the Island Creamery for a taste of freshly homemade ice cream. Your camera should now be filled with memories of your stay at our home. Au revoir et Merci de votre visite.
Owner's Map of Chincoteague
Richard retired after 30 years from Federal Government and 10 years with private industry. I worked for a large telecommunication firm for 25 years. We love the outdoors and have hiked many trails in the Swiss Alps, the famous Bessegen mountain in Norway and the Grand Canyon. Cooking is our passion and savoring the famous Chincoteague oysters and clams while sipping a glass of Muscadet wine with fresh bread by Richard was always a treat. This remains true with picking crabs shared with friends and neighbors on the patio. Richard was known in Chincoteague Island as “the bread man” He shared many of his creations with friends on the Island.

My friends and I greatly enjoyed the home. It was beautifully decorated and very clean and comfortable. It's located in a peaceful section of the island which was perfect for the relaxation that we sought. We were entertained by the ducks and other birds around the small pond. We have rented my vacation homes around the country and this is at the top of the list. Thanks for a great vacation!
Owner response:Dear Judy and Kathy, Our first time meeting our incoming guests was a lovely experience. We are happy that your stay at our home was restful, enjoyable and fun. Our stay was lovely. We very much felt as if we left the hustle and bustle of the city behind us. We loved that the house is away from the beach. It was a nice place to have our friends and family. I very much enjoyed my time in the kitchen. We loved the light in the house, the openness of the floor plan. The outside shower was perfect to clean off the sand-coated children before getting into the house (wish I had one before they got into my car!!). I would love to return next year! My father-in-law is still calling it his "favorite beach vacation ever." He is 78 years old so that is a lot of "beach vacations." The only drawback for them was the steep set of stairs to get into the house ... and that we couldn't have their beloved chocolate lab, ZouZou share our vacation.
Owner response:Dear Leah, Family and Friends Nice of you to rate our home. We are delighted that your stay at La Maison Bleue was fabulous and are pleased that your 78 year old Father-in-Law called it "His favorite beach vacation ever". Thank you. We would love to see you again next year. Claudine et Richard L'Italien

We had a wonderful week at La maison bleu. It was the perfect size for our two families (four adults and two girls), and we loved that everything was on one floor. Everything in the house was extremely well-maintained - I can't imagine one could find a more upscale beach rental in Chincoteague. We made use of all of the amenities, especially the outdoor shower, the screened-in porch, and the extraordinarily well-equipped kitchen. The owners could not have been more responsive and welcoming. They even recommended a boat tour for dolphin-watching that turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Like most locations in Chincoteague, we were able to easily take advantage of all the region had to offer: the beach on Assateague everyday, crabbing, lighthouse tour, NASA visit, pony rides, miniature golf/amusements, bike riding and more. If we go back to Chincoteague we would definitely rent this property again. Highly recommend.
Owner response:Dear Lisa and Friends, We strive to provide the highest quality accommodations and amenities at la Maison Bleue. We are delighted that you had a fabulous time in Chincoteague Island. Captain Matt, Marshland Charters, is well known for his high standard for customer satisfaction. Thank you for the lovely review.

We had a fabulous time at La Maison Bleue with our friends from Berlin, who were equally excited about the spacious and very well equipped vacation home we lived in for a week. Our daughters, aged 6 and 13 shared a room and had enough space to run around, jump rope and help cook in the kitchen. It allows three people at a time to prep and create great meals with a multitude of high quality cooking equipment. We raved about the thick towels and nice bedding, which - together with the crabbing and angling equipment as well as toddler crib and sand toys - showed that this house is truly a labor of love! Many thanks to the owners for sharing it with us.
Owner response:Dear Antje and Family, Fabulous review, Thank you. I would love to hear about the fun in the kitchen, as we too love to cook. Keep in touch. Claudine

I have absolutely no complaints as the place was absolutely perfect for our family of 5. Owners are a real pleasure to work with as is their property manager. The property and home are as described in the VRBO details and then some as owners seem to think of everything one may need in a rental home. Further, it is meticulously kept. Our favorite part of the home is the roomy, screened in porch (a necessity in Chincoteague) that overlooks a pond, which is full of wildlife. The frogs will sing you a symphony every night. Enjoy it! I am quite certain you will.

Our family of 4, two children aged 2.5 years and 3 months, spent a wonderful week in La Maison Bleue on Chincoteague Island. If you are looking for an impeccable place to stay with all the comfort you can imagine, do not hesitate to book this house. All ingredients were there for a care free holiday: a friendly welcome by the property manager, a welcome bottle of wine from the owners, the great bbq deck, screened exterior dining room, baby crib! a fabulously well equipped kitchen - and of course the relaxed atmosphere of the island. Our children had an outdoor feast on the wide beach of the wildlife refuge, and we were able to receive two guests with two children comfortably in the three bedroom house. Our hosts clearly have put all their efforts in making the house as comforatable as possible, with combined details of design and practicality. The outdoor shower after a day at the beach - and the uniquely bright living room with high ceilings were absolute plusses. We can strongly recommend La Maison Bleue for your stay in Chincoteague!
