We recently enjoyed a very relaxing Labor Day weekend at the Wood Stork Cottage. First of all, the cottage is first class. Beautifully done with everything you need. The owner, Annita, was very attentive to our every need prior to going down. We ordered seafood dinners each night and they were terrific - very fresh and very Southern. The island, however, is the main attraction. Go if you like unspoiled, uncommercial places. Every morning we had our choice of beach to ourselves and not once were there more than a half dozen people within sight (on Labor Day weekend!). All three beaches are accessible by bike (two are provided) and are a beautiful 20 minute ride through the maritime forest and tidewater marshes. The optional golf cart (highly recommended for hauling gear, but only on paved roads) will take you to the islands' historic Reynolds estate, UGA Marine Institute, the light house and Nannygoat beach on the southern tip of the island. Lastly, we were welcomed and treated so warmly by the local residents of Hog Hammock when we visited their church. A wonderful service followed by another terrific meal. There are two active churches on the island that alternate Sundays so check first to see which one is being used. If you like unspoiled beaches and maritime forest and you don't need restaurants & other diversions, then Sapelo could be for you. You certainly can't go wrong staying in this or any of Annita's other "Birdhouses".Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Having day tripped to Sapelo before I expected the pristine, virtually untouched beauty of the island and was again overwhelmed. We drove down miles of single track sand roads through the varying habitats of a large southern sea island in its natural state, towering pines, yaupons, massive live oaks, palmetto, eventually reaching a beach, deserted, a creek cutting through to the marsh, a pack of pelicans waiting on the turning tide. The house was just as presented, immaculate, new, equipped for a chef. We were met by a most charming gentleman who promptly invited us to the island wide wedding and related party. Sapelo is an adventure, previously requiring some small physical sacrifice and foregoing of pampering comforts; no longer. Go now.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, adventure seekers.

I stayed in the Woodstork Cottage for five days and must say, this is the absolute best vacation I've ever had. Although the weather was a little chilly, the folks on Sapelo made us feel at home. We were provided with tours of the island, as well as fresh seafood (when I saw fresh, I mean clams dug that morning!) in the refrigerator upon arrival! Your meals can be provided for you, or you can cook your own. Not only is the Woodstork Cottage luxury (i.e. first class appliances, beds feel like clouds), there is much to do on the Island: horseback riding, marsh tours, birding, hunting, etc. You name it. I would recommend the Woodstork Cottage to anyone looking for a romantic hideaway. I know my words here are not sufficient enough to express my sentiments for the place; I doubt this is possible.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.
