Hibiscus condo description
Our condo has lovely views over the Atlantic Ocean. A short stroll across an elevated boardwalk with gazebos takes you through dunes to the most spectacular and widest beach in Florida. Sugar white sand stretches several hundred yards from the dunes down to the warm ocean water. Waves lapping the shore are gentle enough for kids to frolic, but farther offshore are energetic enough for surfing, boogie boarding and body surfing.
Our condo is one of 4 in a uniquely shaped octagonal building. Since there are only 4 condos in the building and because it is located upstairs, it is extremely quiet. The octagonal shape allows for a living/dining area large enough to entertain the entire group. Both bedrooms have their own baths and the two rooms are separated making them very private. The master bathroom has a jacuzzi under windows from which you can hear the waves on the shore. The back wall of the master bedroom and living room are nearly all glass with large sliding glass doors that enter onto a covered porch with spectacular ocean views. To make the cool winter evenings more cozy, there is a real wood-burning fireplace.
The grounds are beautiful gardens with boardwalks throughout. There are three pools and two open air hot tubs. The decks around the pools have plenty of outdoor seating and tables for lounging or meals outdoors. Numerous gas grills are located around the pools and elsewhere on the property. A lighted tennis court and weight room are available for those who can't sit still during vacations.
Exciting activities exist in nearby St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in North America. An old Spanish fort, El Castillo de San Marcos is located on the water downtown and real cannons are fired several times every weekend. A smaller Spanish fort (the outpost) at the southern end of the island is reached by a small ferry carrying visitors across the lagoon (for free!). Numerous museums, restaurants and bars are located downtown. The St. Augustine lighthouse is open to the public and an alligator zoo is just down the road. Boat rentals, including motorboats, sailboats, and kayaks are available. Fishing is great on the beach or in the lagoon behind the barrier island.

Location & View
The building is set back from the beach by the dunes. Two buildings are located to the right and left of us and our beach-side deck faces in between the break in the buildings. We are close enough to hear the surf, see the waves, and people on the beach. Kite surfers often can be seen jumping waves when the wind is good....moreless
Because we are on the second floor, we have a long view out into the ocean from the porch, living/dining room, and kitchen. Loved the place, But!
Loved the place, But!
My husband and I love the place it was clean and excellently placed to collect the winter sun. Could see the ocean from the kitchen. The condo is close to a Winn Dixie and Publix, plus a Dollar General. The bed in the master room was very comfortable, granted it did look rough but looks aren't everything. Kitchen did have enough of everything to cook just about anything. Knives for cutting could use some help so if you do a lot of chopping might want to bring your own, I guess that goes if you have a favorite frying pan also, what they have will work but it is hard and it does get tricky. Of course it did get me out of cooking a few dishes. The only thing that really got my goat was the poor wifi. If you plan on streaming Netflix or streaming anything forget it. I have a feeling that this condo is just picking up what comes from the clubhouse, it doesn't have it's own Wifi. So all in all when we come to St. Augustine again will rent this again, but would bring my own hotspot. So, overall just loved the place.

This place was spotless and had everything we needed. The location was great because it was away from the crowds and relaxing but only a few minutes drive to things to do. The people were very helpful and very nice.

About: We are both professors of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida. We studied at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego and our teaching and research involves the ocean. Some of our favorite past times (after visiting the beach) are to sail and kayak. Clearly, we love the ocean and have found St. Augustine Beach to be one of the nicest we've ever seen.
Although the west coast of Florida is closer to our home in Gainesville, we find the east coast nicer with the wide beach, good waves, and great old world flavor of St. Augustine. We particularly like St. Augustine Beach because it is less developed than most of the rest of the east coast, with only a few low-rise condo complexes and mostly single family homes. The ocean side of the barrier island is fun and a great place to relax, but the lagoon side also has its attractions. It is particularly nice place to go kayaking in amongst the oyster reefs and marshlands.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Our day generally starts with a stroll down to the beach with our dog, Sam. The morning light is particularly spectacular and commonly a fleet of shrimp boats is out, possibly catching our dinner for that evening (about a mile down A1A is a fantastic local seafood shop). We then come back to the condo, gather our two boys and head out for games on the beach - bocci, boogie boarding, body surfing, smash ball, or just relaxing and reading books. We commonly grill fresh fish for dinner and then relax through the evening.
